"Less over-the-top fashionista and more hard-edged." That's how Ninja Theory responded to the request to overhaul Dante in the new Devil May Cry .
Lead Producer Alex Jones and Chief Creative Director Tameem Antoniades of Ninja Theory were tasked with the following: give the world a re-imagined, overhauled Dante, one that will somehow manage to appeal to both new and old fans alike. Now, the initial reaction wasn't overly positive but both developer and publisher "were anticipating a strong reaction and fan skepticism," so that's why Rey Gutierrez of the PlayStation Blog sat down to learn more. You can find the brief interview through the link, and maybe you'll agree with the comments and approach. Evans said they'll "keep what's recognizably essential about the title," and he admits that people are "super passionate about a character that has become an icon." Antoniades also talks a lot about why DMC became so popular – it's more about the attitude and style, which is true – so these guys are well acquainted with the revered action franchise.
See what you think. As they say, they know "change is scary" and they don't think they'll "win over the hardcore" just yet. And they remind us that it isn't a "totally different departure" and will "fit in with most of what you know."

i just can not understand this industries obsession with pretty boys!
honestly, this dante looks like he would be too busy worried about demons messing up his hair to blast them to kingdom come!
im a demon slayer, so its my job to kill you, but i wont because i spent 4 hours this morning in the mirror doing my hair and i dont want to mess it up.
thats the message NT are sending out with dante, as the saying goes looks and impressions is everything!
this guy does not look bad a$$, hes not the person you would see in the back of a back alley and turn and pis bolt.
his certainly not intimidating, and thats what dante is suppose to be!
soon, they will be putting freaking kratos in a freaking too too!
might as well have him prancing around in a ballerina dress while your at it NT!
So… did the last version of Dante. He's very close to being Bishonen, highly feminized male protagonists in Japan. Think Metrosexual.
Lots of characters from Japan are this way. Off the top of my head there's Jin and Leo (who is almost the definition of Bishonen, to the point where people question her/his gender) from Tekken; Vampire Hunter D; Vega from Street Fighter II… it goes on and on.
Pretty boys are prominent in Japan, and seeing as how the original Dante was designed to be one, this version is keeping with the original design in that aspect. He just doesn't have white hair.
the original dante does not look like a pretty boy, he never really looked like a bad a$$ but he certainly did not look like a pussy!
sadly i cant say that about the new dante.
I just watched the trailer again and I'm sold so far. I only played the original Devil May Cry and I sucked at it, so I gave up on the series. I've always looked at it with a fond interest, but bitter memories of not being able to get passed the first boss kept me away from it.
This is a new beginning for people like me — like those exist! — and people who haven't played the previous games, which may be Capcom's intent with the project.
The character design ISN'T that bad. When I first saw the trailer, yeah, it was pretty horrid, but it's not nearly as EMO-ish as it's being branded as, and the character does look like a much younger version of Dante. Thinking maybe fifteen or sixteen years old. Besides, it fits into the material a bit better with this new "edgier" approach. Dante has always looked pretty clean-cut; but clean-cut kids, white hair or not, don't really get all that involved in the occult side of the world. Emo kids, goth kids, those types of people do, however. So, it makes sense.
As for comparing him to Twilight? Ha. None of the kids in Twilight, or any of the actors involved, look anything like this version of Dante. They're all pretty clean-cut themselves. And, I think this kid could hand all those prissy vampires and big dogs their collective asses.
I have no idea , Dante was a great success , i have no idea why you want to change him,
If you Think that this DMC will sell more than the previous ones , just cause you gave Dante that horrible look ,
Then you are Wrong ,
I anticipated DMC 5 ever since i finished DMC 4 , but this , this is like a slap in the face ,
RIP DMC !!
I wonder what would happen if Nintendo "reimagined" Mario or Zelda, or Samus… The majority of gamers would have a hissy fit and probably refuse to buy the game, just like DMC fans are doing right now.
I'm not usually one to get hung up on how something looks, either graphics wise or actual look, but for them to change the icon of a series just because they felt they needed a change. As for letting the "creators do their thing", their "thing" is to cator to their target audiance, and I'm pretty sure DMC's audiance has spoken pretty damn clearly and NT has done nothing but given them the finger and totally disrespected the wishes of those long time fans, and they will see that in a niche game like DMC they don't have the brand name like SE has with Final Fantasy…
"Less over-the-top fashionista and more hard-edged."
Really?! Than why did they decide to go with mascara, tight pants, and no shirt?
This "DMC" is an abomination.
I was shocked at first… but now that I know it's based on a younger "Dante", it is sort of interesting.
Maybe we'll see where or how he get's his "SILVER HAIR", "REBELLION", "EBONY & IVORY"… By the looks of the trailer, seems like he's just getting in touch with who he is… I'm actually looking forward to it…
I really hope they don't stuff it up!!
Ninja Theory had one the best games out when the PS3 1st came out, Heaven Sword was a really good game. Action/adventure games are they're strong suit, they should give us a pretty good game. Who knows it might even be better than the originally series.

I just don't get it. I watched the trailer and it looked pretty good, but i couldn't stop looking at his damn hair. it looked like he had a bowl haircut. . . . . why do they they do this? I didn't care that they went back to the beginning, just leave the man's hair alone. look at those that haven't changed their "doos", elvis, mr. t, james brown, donald trump, don king. on the flip-side, the action in the trailer was good and i think an origin story for Dante would be very interesting. I'm also curious about how they're going to include Virgil in this story.
And again… Another thread about the new dante. I've never seen so much whining over a character. Ever!!! It really does amaze me. I don't understand how people can say they don't want to buy a game just because of a 2 or 3 minute video of the overhauled character, that didn't even show any gameplay. LOL. It's pretty ridiculous actually. Well, like DJWheat said… "Get over it!!!" It's just so fanboyish. LOL
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Never said i wasn't going to buy it. it was just a comment. and besides people buy lots of games because of the story and the characters. there are not too many gamers i know that agree with character changes in big franchises. oh, and again. . . . .it's just a comment.
If there intent was to make Dante look like a crack addict they did a great job. Give me a break.
