Ueda Talks Last Guardian, Colossus, Games as “Art”

The Last Guardian could very well be our most anticipated game of 2011, and because we also love ICO and Shadow of the Colossus (which will be remade in high-definition for an upcoming collection), it stands to reason we're pretty big fans of creator Fumito Ueda.

And if you qualify as a fan, you should definitely check out the Q&A with Ueda over at the PlayStation Blog . In addition to showing off the new trailer that debuted at the Tokyo Game Show – which we're sure you've already seen – we get more details concerning gameplay and specific mechanics. First, we learn we will only control the boy and not the animal, called Trico. We sort of expected this, right? And actually, Ueda says the boy doesn't even have a name just yet, but he has to escape from the location you've seen in the two trailers released thus far. Trico is the boy's "guardian" and can take out enemies in one swipe; the boy is apparently unable to take down those same enemies. Ueda also hinted that there may be another creature of Trico's considerable size lurking in that fantastical world…

Now, as for any relation to his last creation, Shadow of the Colossus , the Blog wanted to know if we'd find similar controls in Guardian . Ueda said they haven't quite decided on "the actual method of controls and button layouts" yet, but he does want the controls to be "simpler" overall. Then he was asked how he feels about so many game journalists calling SotC "one of the best examples of video games being an art form." Ueda replied:

"I’m happy about it, I’m flattered. But I wonder what part are they are referring to when they make that comment, that it’s art. What part are they looking at? Because I think it’s possible to make it even more artistic. But because it’s a video game, those possibilities have been subdued somewhat — it’s a game. So I’d be interested to know what part, exactly, they mean when they refer to it as art.

There are games out there that are much more artistic than Shadow of the Colossus. And personally I also believe that it would be possible to make it even more 'arty,' so to speak."

Although he wouldn't give any specific examples of games he deemed to be "art," we're fairly certain he understands the concept. As times goes on, we're going to be very interested in learning more about The Last Guardian , which is guaranteed to be unique…and almost guaranteed to be memorable.

Artistic. Well, the atmosphere was what made SotC so great. The feeling of being alone, with just your horse and a sword, it was incredible.

Sounds like Ico all over again, except this time you're the frail one. Everything old is new again I guess, and this certainly seems good.

This is one game that I am definitely looking forward to playing.
Peace.

As a gamer and individual who happen to be a art student, been through many art courses I don't see where people get the idea of video games being art.

Its true that video games are produced from art(same case with any product out there), but that doesn't make it art or even a artform; this when you consider the fact video games are a product, something meant to be consumed by the mass market and its end goal is to make a profit from. On the contrary art is nothing but a construct, its not a product, it cannot be consumed and making a profit is not its ulterior goal; instead art is something to be observed and something for the observer to make an interpretation from, something you cannot do with video games, music or movies.

In the end I find the whole video games is art debate to be out of place and I see it as nothing but a bunch of self-rightous individuals who looking for a label to be thrown around. I don't end my criticism with video games, but the same goes for music and movies…just as video games aren't art, neither are movies or movies. In fact where I actually agree with Ridley Scott on movies not being art:

http://behindthescenestv.net/new-releases/ridley-scott-movies-are-business-not-art-form

As for ICO and Shadow, I love them both and still play them till this day along with Drakan. In fact because of how well the audio in ICO is, I tend to use the game as a test bed whenever I test my surround sound system.

Holy crap! Something intelligent from you! It's a miracle.

To me, art is something that evokes feelings and emotions. It's not necessarily an interpretive thing, and that is what makes them art. TY.
Peace.

Huh? Even Stevie Wonder could see video games as art.

Games are a form of art. Whether something is created to make a profit or not is irrelevant. Picaso painted for money, so I guess his paintings aren't art?

Also plenty of games are open to individual interpretation, perfect examples being ICO and SOTC. Oh and the same goes for music and movies.

Honestly, whatever school you're going to is doing a terrible job because 99% of what you say on here is complete bull$hit. It's laughable how wrong you are about the simplest things. I can't imagine you having the intelligence to complete anything that required an ounce of common sense.

I'm an art student as well (Though that doesn't add credibility to my/your words) but what you're saying is kinda off…
First of all… Let me say that music and movies (not every song and every movie but in general) are a form of art no matter what you say (games are still debatable but only because they're the "new" kid on the block)…

But, since when is it so simple to categorize art? I mean sure i see games more like an art gallery instead of art but that's not the point… I think that art isn't art because it's sold or not but because of it's nature…
I don't know if that makes sense to you…

The definition of art would lead one to conclude that video games are indeed art. All the individual elements used in games are seen as art when looked at on a one by one basis. When they come together they create a new art form. To say a game isn't art, is the same as saying art isn't art.

Music is nothing but a bunch of notes that are composed or arranged to make a song. The creativity involved to make a song is the art.

If you have to ask whether or not it's art…it's art.

You destroy your own argument sir. Art is quite often a product. And when you sit back from your chair after an amazing scene or the end of the game and it makes you think about your own life, has you making interpretations, even inspires you to create. It is art.

It's "Artists" like you who make the community stay in limbo, turning the people who don't understand art but would like to try to turn away because it's made inaccessable by the "artsy-fartsy's".

My wife is an artist with a degree in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History, is working on her Master's to become a teacher and is astounded by games like Heavy Rain or Uncharted, as well as cinema and some tv out there such as Breaking Bad or the like. Keep in mind she isn't a gamer in any sense of the word. How is it that photography is considered art and cinema isn't? I think photography is the most phony of all forms of "art," but it doesn't make it less of a discipline just because *I* feel that way.

The people who claim videogames aren't art *cough* Roger Ebert *cough* are afraid there will one more art form infringing upon the form they work in and will take some level of credit away from it. Art has a multitude of forms. There are numerous definitions of art, check the Merriam-Webster site. None of them says it needs to be painted or sculpted.

Art extends to discplines as far removed from one another as Painting, Music, Architecture, Cinema, Television, Writing, even to the Culinary Arts these days with things you can see being done with cakes on the food network weekly. Your's is a terribly narrow view.

Everyone else has explained it already, but if you ask any literature professor if they consider literature to be art, they'll almost definitely say yes, and many many works of literature were and are targeted at certain demographics, aiming for making a profit. Same with videogames.

Many video games aren't art. They're just, well, games 🙂 , but there are some which stir up your emotions, eg. MGS4, FFIX, Eiyuu Densetsu Sora no Kiseki, etc.

I don't think that art needs to draw out your emotions (necessarily). I think the fact that it is of human creation from the imagination is enough to call it art.

Games = super art. it emcompasses all the other arts into ONE singular super art, the game.

Heavy Rain has: music, graphics (art), acting, and whatever else is 'considered' to be art.

Games are the ultimate arts in my eyes.

is the most anticipated game of 2011, well that and DNF of course.
this year was the year for exclusives, next years a year for both.
dunno how this keeps happening but year in year out were getting fuller years, with even better games than the last.
TLG should be 2011s heavy rain, so suffice to say i have seriously high expectations for it!

speaking of heavy rain, finally found the patch yesterday and im about half way through it now.
im impressed the way they implemented move into it, some of the actions, especially the fights feel really unique and spellbinding!
heavy rain should win GOTY 2010, i know it wont, but no game has ever released that has pushed the industry ahead so much.
hell, it even created its own genre!
if that does not deserve GOTY, than nothing does!

I get home this morning around 5am and come on here to see over 70posts under the Halo Reach thread and only 9 currently under this thread. That's pretty said IMO.

I love that he's always wanting to do better. Even while acknowledging that SOTC is a great example of art he admits more can be done. I also think it's interesting that he hasn't bothered with the control layout yet.

Also, to answer the question: The World Ueda created alone is the biggest art already, the atmosphere, the forbidden land, the mystic feeling, the loneliness, the music, the ancient ruin feeling… all this, as a while, is the biggest art form.

So if Trico does the fighting and we can't control him, are we looking at a platformer/puzzle game?

I really wanted to fly 🙁
