Amidst constant rumors that the game had been canceled, EA finally confirmed via conference call with industry sources that Lord of the Rings: The White Council , while not canceled, has been put on "indefinite hold."
Initially scheduled for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, it appears there may be some licensing and creative design issues regarding the project. EA's CFO Warren Johnson didn't go into specifics, but his statement is relatively definitive: the game ain't coming this year.
"We are looking at the creative positioning and feature set on the Lord of the Rings franchise," Johnson said. "Because of these reasons we did not decide to move forward with releasing it this year."
The LotR trilogy has spawned more than a few video games over the past few years, and the latest would've been the first next-gen game based on Tolkien's legendary fantasy novels and Peter Jackson's films. Of course, this announcement doesn't mean it won't ever happen, but for now, The White Council is officially on the back burner.
