Rising Producer On Brutality: “A Hell Of A Lot Of Risk”

Metal Gear Solid has never been grisly so when we watched Raiden slice through human (or apparently human) enemies with fierce brutality, people started to talk about the "new-look MGS."

It's not just about the new gameplay; it's the new, more adult-oriented style. And don't think the Rising creators haven't noticed this reaction; producer Shigenobu Matsuyama says he's fearful about seeing a "GTA-like" reaction from gamers. In speaking to Eurogamer , Matsuyama addressed the ability to cut through human bodies in many different ways, and distinctly recalls early impressions generated by the now-venerated Grand Theft Auto franchise:

"What was shocking was a title like Grand Theft Auto. I never realized the freedom of any other games. You could go anywhere. You could do anything. It was fun, but at the same time I felt a fear of what the people would do and how they would react.

When I saw that title I thought, as a creator there was going to be a hell of a lot of risk involved. As I create Rising, and going back to the freedom to cut humans, I always have Grand Theft Auto and that shocking feeling in my mind."

Still, it's not that the blood and guts go flying; the carnage is more on the slick, sci-fi side of things. Not that that makes it any less brutal, of course, and if placed in front of enough anti-gaming eyes, such a feature could cause a definite backlash. So, what do you think? Some gamers just don't have an opinion one way or the other; all they want is an awesome production.

Mine, 2. I just hope they make him less of sissy. He kinda reminded me of that dude from Napoleon Dynamite in the role he played in Blades of Glory with Will Ferrel. I don't think we'll be getting a next-gen Shinobi from Sega anytime soon, so I'll be putting all my eggs in this basket.

lol, yeah, well my mind changed about Raiden with MGS4. Because, like you, I thought he was femme-weenie compared to Snake in MGS2. Then he changed into uber-hardcore awesomeness in MGS4.
Tecmo and Konami need to do a crossover with Raiden and Ryu. That'd do good for Tecmo's business.
