New Batman Details: Bigger World, Even Better Mocap

The more we hear about Batman: Arkham City , the more we're convinced Rocksteady Studios will give us another Game of the Year contender.

More details have been revealed thanks to a recent interview with Rocksteady's Sefton Hill in an upcoming edition of the Official PlayStation Magazine UK, and perhaps what's most exciting is the first tidbit: the game world will be over five times the size of the Arkham Asylum map! Of course, one might assume this simply because we've broken free of the confines of that one building structure (as big as it was) but even so, the developers have been clear: it's not a sandbox game. Obviously, though, there will be plenty to see and do. Plus, Batman will have more skills and abilities; twice as many as in the first title, in fact. Lastly, the team wanted "an authentic sense of continuity," so you'll actually start the new adventure with some of the stuff you earned in Arkham Asylum . Said Hill:

"…we also wanted to create an authentic sense of continuity from the end of Batman: Arkham Asylum, so the player will begin Batman: Arkham City with many of the same core gadgets that they unlocked in the first game. Batman’s cutting-edge technology is a significant part of the game, so gamers can expect to see a range of totally new gadgets, as well as evolved new features built into those tools that they already enjoyed in Batman: Arkham Asylum."

The team is also "dedicated to injecting an incredible amount of detail into every environment we build." Think they're putting in the effort? Um, yeah. They've even gone the extra mile by creating a dedicated mocap wing of the studio, complete with "crash mats and a load of other props." You may recall the immense number of animations in the first Batman ; Rocksteady isn't happy with that, though, as they've "overhauled the entire motion capture pipeline" so as to "grab even more of the subtle movement of our actors."

If you aren't psyched by now, check your pulse.

I so can't wait for this game. I love Arkham Asylum and after reading the article in Game Informer it made me want to go pick it up again just to tide me over.

Well, if the game continues directly from AA. . . Ain't y'all wondering where he found the time to upgrade his current weapons??

It doesn't take place right after AA.

By continuity he meant it doesn't make sense to have the player unlock all of the same gadgets from the first game and start Batman out with very minimal gear. That is why you will have all the gadgets you unlock from the first game because Batman wouldn't lose whatever gadgets or skills he acquires.

I'm glad to hear many of the "core gadgets" will be making a return from the start. We are starting in Gotham proper so it wouldn't make much sense that Batman doesn't have most of his gear on hand when the game begins.

I was surprised that we had to purchase that gargoyle hanging move in the last game. I would have thought we would start the game with that ability since it's one of Batman's signature moves.

Where are you getting Naked Batman from?

Naked Snake. Big Boss was sent into Russia with next to no supplies or weapons, earning him the temp title of Naked Snake.

Where in that quote do you infer Batman won't have any gadgets or gear like Naked Snake?

Comprehension, man. Comprehension!

@main_event05:

Obviously, they didn't catch the reference to MGS…

POS: No, it doesn't mean what you think, it means:

"Procure (weapons and gadgets) On Site, hence the reference to "Naked Batman"…

As much as I enjoy a sandbox game, I am very glad they're sticking to the winning formula they had in AA. Batman as a character just calls for story driven progression. GotY contender indeed.

Alienange,

I hear you man. These guys will guarentee their success by sticking to their original formula while slightly tweaking certain unwanted affects. Glad these guys at Rocksteady know their fans, and their niche…unlike some studios.

I must admit, I liked the original, but it didn't grab me as it seemed to do so for so many others. I'm kind of wondering if this will be a sequel that starts off as the same point that AA finished, but I doubt it. Anyway, more, better gadgets is a good thing. Better mo-cap is never a bad thing, and five times the size of the asylum is pure awesome, provided that the environments are relatively varied, and you've got plenty of opportunities to use different tactics in different areas.

So yes, I'm intrigued. However I think that it, like the original will be a late in the game purchase from me. I mean, it doesn't help that I've never liked DC Comics…
Peace.

For the people that don't know, the storyline of this game supposedly takes place about 1 year after the first. It's not a direct sequel.

Also for people who don't know, there is no Arkham "City", but what the story is, is that the Warden from the asylum became governor after taking credit for stopping The Joker, and bought part of the city to become the new Arkham. It was created just for this game.

I really hope I can play this really soon.

@jman12343:

I was wondering why the title "Arkham City" as well, but now that you mention it…

SPOILERS ALERT:

Wasn't the warden supposed to be "possessed" by the spirit of Arkham and wasn't he the one placing all the clues for the "Spirit of Arkham" clue??

On the other hand, why would they elect someone that let all the madness in the first AA to happen in the first place because he was too inept to allow the Joker to go loose??

Or am I thinking too deep into it??
