EA has released the first bit of gameplay for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit ; you can find some examples over at YouTube.
Here's some footage of one of the unique challenges you'll have to face in Criterion's upcoming racer. In this one, you have to beat a target time set by Belj, and while the challenge obviously isn't long, it appears shortcuts are vital to success. Furthermore, you can clearly spot the Burnout influence during a crash; it features some of that spectacular slo-mo destruction goodness Criterion patented in their primary franchise.
Next, we'll definitely want to see some Hot Pursuit. It just has to be the highlight and if you think it isn't as fun to chase as it is to race, well…you've likely never played a Hot Pursuit before. Chasing is a bit more strategic and really opens the game up in terms of variety and longevity. Longevity isn't something we're going to question; one could quite literally play Burnout Paradise until they're dead . Of course, all that DLC helps, but don't think Criterion won't do the same for the new Need for Speed .

It doesn't really look like a Hot Pursuit game.
That's because all they do now is put nitro boost on every car and it makes it way too arcade like (graphics and controls). Hot Pursuit 2 was perfect, because it was more realistic. A freakin' Lamborghini didn't have, or need, nitro boost…and it doesn't now.
I'm definitely looking forward to this game.Let's hope that this doesn't meant though that Criterion aren't going to be giving us another Burnout soon in the near future.
I think another Burnout will come. Not sure when though, perhaps they are letting the concepts mature before diving in?
Speaking of Burnout….there's a review of Burnout Legends in the PSP User Review section.

I don't care at all i want car customization!!! >=O
I just wanna run from the cops!!!
this game looks so good, but ive just started 6th form and i want to work hard, and GT5 looks likely to eat my time along with Brink, and then you've got portal 2 and infamous2 and probably LBP2 and so on… im gonna have a hard time managing my time…
Looks good, dont get me wrong… But I was expecting it to be more need-for-speedy, what I watched just looked like a hd remake of that ferrari game you see in the arcades. Where is the police chase!? I know it probably wont happen but I would love for a remake of most wanted. True I havn't played hot pursuit, so dont judge me!
I agree with your arcade comment – it really looks like an old coin-up arcade racing game. The handling looks just so… Wrong. Like they are not really connected to the road at all, but are a cardboard held in front of the camera. I really looked forward to this game as I *love* burnout paradise and the good oldfashioned cop chases in nfs, thinking NfS + Criterion was a safe bet, but now I'm not so sure anymore…
I hate it when you get all excited for a game then you see some game play footage and it disappoints you.
This does not look like a Hot pursuit game.
This is not going back to the roots of NFS, I want Undergound, most wanted and the REAL Hot pursuit games back.
NFS Most Wanted was *awsome*. I was hoping, even expecting the next NFS to be a kind of paradise/most wanted merge. That'd be a dream come true…!
I love me some Burnout..no, not Paradise, the ones before it. Those absolutely rocked. This game looks fun, as were all Hot Pursuits.
cant wait for criterion to finish this up that way they can get back to making a BLACK 2 sequel!
looks like need 4 speed to me… people are never satisfied u give them alot they want a whole lot more…if its easy to create a game why do gamers complain? make your own game…simple
and people always want new thing but ask for the old things they love. so the devs TRY and please them by keeping the old things people love mixed with a little new but deep down they wanted to bring all new things u might learn to love.
sorry ben i know im off topic but i have alot on my chest…4giveme
Actually, *now* I remember what this clip reminded me of: Fuel! Yes indeed. What we see here is the car handling in Fuel! I definately get a "Fuel vibe" from this. And that is *not* a good vibe. Fuel gotta be the worst racing/action game I've played, ever.
Still, it's Criterion we talk about here so all logic tells me I just *have* to be wrong in these assumptions. But omg, this was Fuel'ish..!
I'm quite certain Criterion has many more cards they have yet to play.
I agree with everyone. This doesnt look like it is staying true to the good NFS games. Hot Pursuit 2 and Most Wanted were the best NFS games ever. I just want another one of those
I'm sold.
