Valve: Portal 2 Originally Had Competitive Multiplayer

It was there, and then it wasn't. That's all you really need to know.

Okay, maybe we should elaborate: Portal 2 will be building upon the foundation set by the original title; it'll have a longer campaign and we'll even get an all-new co-op multiplayer option. It won't include competitive multiplayer, but did you realize Valve had – at one time – planned to include it? According to what writer Erik Wolpaw told 1Up , they actually had some multiplayer "up and running" but after a while, they realized that all the portal use just got chaotic. Said Wolpaw:

"Along with co-op, [we had] the idea of sort of a competitive Portal multiplayer. We went down that path, actually, for a little while and had something up and running — the best way to describe it is sort of speedball meets Portal. You know, a sports analog. And it quickly became apparent that while it's fun for about two seconds to drop portals under people and things like that, it quickly just devolves into pure chaos. It lost a lot of the stuff that was really entertaining about Portal, which was puzzle-solving. Cooperative puzzle-solving was just a much more rewarding path."

Apparently, the multiplayer gameplay involved moving a ball from one end of a certain map to another with the help of portals. Your opponents would try to stop you by trapping you with a portal shot into the ground. Sounds cool, but it just didn't work out, so they nixed it and simply added the co-op campaign option. Yeah, we're good with that.

Probably just as well. Sounds like it would only have been fun if there was like… a referee or something.

It'll get crazy enough in co-op once you and a friend get bored and start shooting out the ground below one another for shite's and giggles.

The multilayer sounds like it would have been absolutely mind bending. I can totally see why this could turn insane, if only it could be a refined chaos they might be onto the most intelligent and involved multi-player game to grace the market. But, I guess it won;t happen, at least this time around

Hehe. Portal competitive multiplayer would be off the wall insane. Anyone would be able to tell you that simply by playing the original. Just y'know drop another player into the incinerator, or drop one of those droids in front of them, or just create a looping portal than take away the one in the ground. Would've been pure fun. Still, it makes more sense to can it. Too many people would abuse it for sure.
Peace.

They could do a MP where you see who could solve a bunch of puzzles the fastest. You have you're own side and the other does as well. And It will announce what stage you completed and what stage you are currently going to and etc.

People would of had seizures with MP lol. Just imagine you had to shoot the enemy with and alternate gun while you were chasing them through portals, and you got cross over to there fellow teammates portals. XD you would be going through endless portals XD, that sounds like fun <3 OO

Although creating a portal for some knob to fall through and pop out from the ceiling would be awesome, I'm sure Valve's extended play testing has shown the lack of fun in such a mode. Or do they need a public beta to figure it out?

off topic

I just started playing FF XIII 3 hours in and up to this moment I absolutely hate it. Boring characters( except the black guy) and gameplay.

Can someone tell me if it will be interesting if ever ?????

Thanks

I think you will be. The game opens up 20+hrs in and it has a great story IMO. Eventually the game stops being a tutorial and you're able to do everything gameplay wise. I really enjoyed upgrading my weapons.

Co-Op and Campaign are just fine for Portal.

i really cant wait for this we dont have anywhere near enough puzzle games this gen!
thats what made darksiders so great, lots of large interesting puzzles to solve.
not that crap they call puzzles out of GOW3!
take this block move it there, than move the block from there to there.
come on, something a little more complex would be nice!
i did not realize 10 year olds play GOW!
i wish david would go back and create GOW4, the first is still by far the best just because of its unforgiving brutality!

they should add that as a fun function… just online chaos mode… say once you really kill glados or something and all of the subjects get let out… how much fun would it be if you were all running around with portal guns just flying in and out of everywhere… god knows what the aim would be though. i understand why they scrapped it but i would loved to have had a try.

I welcome all co-op games with open arms. We got enough competitive multiplayer as it is.
