John-Shepard3D gaming is in its infancy right now, but if certain big exclusives push the technology forward, it may became a highly sought-after luxury.
Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival , Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Ray Maguire said Sony has done a lot of R&D concerning 3D development, and this involved testing games like LittleBigPlanet in 3D. Apparently, the fixed camera actually helps, as it make the experience "more intuitive and fun" and it decreases "the number of depth-based mistakes you can make while playing the game." It even increases visual clarity, as "distances can be perceived better and players had improved accuracy." Maguire also mentioned testing Gran Turismo 5 in 3D and said the immersion level was "much higher than with a regular 2D racer," which is to be expected. But now the question is, will you be willing to play games like LBP, GT5 and Killzone 3 in 3D? Perhaps you want to, but are you willing to drop the bucks? We're a little concerned about the health problems that may result from extended 3D viewing but hey, we're not about to recommend 6-hour gaming stints.
LittleBigPlanet 2 is going to be amazing, with or without 3D. All you need to do is check out some footage or a trailer to see that.

I'm pretty sure these games are gonna be great in 3D. I can't wait to play them on my 3D setup. GT5 is at the top of my list. Just gotta finish up my G27 sim cockpit and I'm all set. Bring on November 2nd.
I'm much more interested in 3D than I am in Move, but unfortunately 3D also costs much more than move. I can imagine playing GT5 in 3D would be incredible, especially with a racing wheel, but I just simply can't invest in a 3D TV anytime soon. I'll probably be stretching it just getting the game.
If you have space for a 60" TV or bigger, 3D doesn't have to cost thousands of dollar for a "new" TV, and you end up with a pretty amazing 3DTV. Total cost… Maybe $1200.
Yeah that price would be doable, but it's still just not an option for me just yet. Maybe if I win the lottery or something, but lottery tickets are an extravagance also…
In short, no, I'm not going to pay up for 3D. I don't need any new TVs just for that.
It's interesting to see them talk up 3D as giving an advantage to gamers skills. I guess that means if I'm getting owned by someone in KZ3 online, they probably have a 3D TV.
Haha that'll be the new complaint in online games "No fair! You have 3D and I don't!"
I'm kidding about that but as for having a 3D TV, it seems interesting but it won't be happening for me anytime soon as I have, in the past year, bought a 50" TV and I still have to pay for school. Also, in all honesty, 3D isn't that special a feature to me.

Move this year, and 3D maybe next year. Gotta wait for the 3D quality/price ratio to stabilize. But it seems they'll be plenty of content available at and before that time.
3D is a gimmick. It was tried before and failed and will again. Just because we're told it'll give us an advantage doesn't mean we have to swallow the pill.
However, I say that as someone not interested in 3D, plenty of people are and who am I to tell them they're wrong?!
Then again who are Sony to say they're right? Oh yeah, the guys who are trying to get everyone to buy new TVs.
I'm holding off until I'm proven wrong on this whole 3D hype machine.

8 months ago I would have mostly agreed… As of a month ago, I cannot agree. Everything I've seen on my 3DTV eats the f*** out of everything I've seen in the movie theaters, and doesn't leave scraps. Home 3DTV is superior in every sense, and the way it's developed and created has improved dramatically. If the X Games in 3D doesn't prove it, if 3D games on the PS3 don't prove it, and future content from ESPN, Discovery/IMAX/Sony, and other content that is created properly, than I don't know what does.

Possibly Frostface, but we don't really know at this stage if 3D will be a complete failure. I don't think it will; like most technologies, with the advent of the technology, it does require some time mature.
We don't know yet how good the visual clarify will become, and whether a new type of glasses will make the experience more "comfortable", and therefore, more "rewarding" in a sense.
I feel it is still to early to really make a judgement. I could be wrong, but I think many interesting applications will come from these developments. If done right, the gaming experience should be incredible.

Nice, this will most definitely be the type of 3DTV I get when they come down in price.
It looks like the poor schmucks who buy the glasses enabled versions of 3DTV's will always be the minority. The guys who have to stress out about wearing out their batteries, or accidentally sitting on them, or worse yet, losing them.
Then they'd be even more stressed trying to find obsolete pairs of their special 3D glasses for horrendous prices due to the lack of availability.

This is consistent with what I've read from hands-on demonstrations. When GT5 comes out, I know I'd rather be playing it 3D.
But I'll love it anyway.
Oh well, if 3D is really worth it's salt, years down the road many of us will be enjoying it's benefits.
Right now, I enjoy my 1080p television from a few years ago. I hope it holds out until 3DTV's drop in price, so when I replace it, I'll replace it with a good upgrade at a good price.

No. I take enough trips down Ripoff Road just being a gamer, I'd buy a new TV if I was rich, but it's probably good that I can't cuz I think it would scramble my brains and give me migraines.
The article is a tad confusing though. Does it mean they are adding 3D to LBP1?
I still am very glad I got my 3d tv when I did (as I mentioned in another article, you can get a Mitsubishi DLP 60 inch 3d tv for around 800 dollars).
The content so far is great, and I still don't mind the glasses (and I have prescription glasses too).
I feel like the glasses free 3d tvs will cost around 5000 to 6000 dollars when they come out.
The inconvenience of glasses is not worth 4000 dollars.
Anyways, I've never really liked Gran Turismo, but I'm willing to try it, as it does look pretty fantastic.
PS: Ben, today alone I played Motorstorm 3D Rift, James Cameron's Avatar: The Game, PAIN, and I watched Grand Canyon Adventure 3d on my computer.
That totaled up to about 6 to 7 hours of HEADACHE FREE 3d.
Just wanted to point that out 😉

Glad to see somebody else saying what I've been saying. 3D doesn't have to be insanely expensive, and the quality of the mits DLPs is fantastic. Although I guess not everyone has room for a 60"+ 3DTV, but hey… I think spending less and getting more is great! Thinking about picking up a 60~65" for my bedroom. Not much room for it, but hey, why pay more for less? I'll make room for it! I mean seriously, who pays more for less? Um, aside from Comcast cable customers.
Anyways, yeah… Nice to see LBP should get some 3D treatment. Not that I like the game, but it should work with 3D very effectively in a really cool way.

ohh, Motorstorm 3D. How is that? For only $10 that's a sweet price for some 3D goodness. Thinking about picking it up. The demo was a bit of a let down, but only because I never really liked Motorstorm. The 3D was decent.
And yeah, I don't get headaches watching 3D content. "OMG my eyes!" though if my 3DA-1 isn't set to the right format xD

DLP is over.
For most mfgs, yeah, Mitsubishi is still at it, and I've yet to see any LCD that is superior to my DLP. Older rear projection TVs had no chance against standard TVs, but the quality comparison here is not on the same level as the old days.
There is still a market just as there is a market for projectors to have a 100" screen and all that.

That's what I thought. I have been an LCD guy since I ever even saw an HDTV.
I barely even got this, because I owned a DLP tv in the 90s that was horrible.
But I took the plunge after reading literally dozens of reviews and weighing the pros and cons.
I got it, and it is by far the best tv I have ever owned.
I just watched Coral Reef Adventure, and the picture quality on these IMAX movies are so incredible in 1080p HD at 60 inches!
I hands-down recommend this tv. I'm so happy with it, that I will pay you the entire purchase price of the tv if you buy one and somehow don't like it (not really, but you get the point).

Motorstorm 3D Rift has some really cool 3d in quite a few of the tracks. One track has an intense tunnel section that had really cool depth.
And yeah, Mits DLP tvs are awesome!

Yeah, reviews are what did it for me. I was all set to get an LCD samsung when I got mine (2007). Nothing but good reviews about them. Walked into a Circuit City and saw a lower end model of my TV. Love at first sight. Picture was as good as any TV they had there. Between reviews and what I read over on avsforum.com I was sold on it. Although when I took the plunge it was $3400 for my high end 73" 833. Oh how prices have gone down! xD Worth it though, and when paying that much money you want the best you can get. It's been a great TV these 3 years and it just got better!
Glad to hear the good on Motorstorm 3D btw. I'll probably hop on PSN this weekend to buy it.

I really don't understand how LBP could benefit from 3D. If you're talking depth perception, each of the three layers of the game are separate, there's no problem in differentiation there. If on the other hand it somehow makes the gaps for the jumping easier to determine (which is what I gathered from what is written above) then it makes sense. I just don't see how that would happen.
Gran Turismo on the other hand only makes sense. Not only would it serve to improve the ability to gauge distances in game to perhaps improve overall skill, but the sharpness of the graphics, in combination with 3D would probably serve to make it look even more realistic.
And I try to limit my gaming stints to no more than 2 hours thank you very much. My longest that I recall was the eight hours straight I played GTA IV after first getting it, but the less said about that the better.

I really am in doubt… I need a new TV, buy the price for a 3d tv is just to high. And there is the wife factor… If I buy a big expensive 3D TV then she has big joker card in her hands for a very very long time. And that is even more scary then the amount of money the tv will cost 🙂

or better yet buy a nvidia 3D discover kit and monitor than wait for the 3D TV tech nvidia are releasing.
there releasing a kit at the end of the year that will let you use the kit on console games.
a 3D monitor are around 300 and the discover kit is 100.
MUCH cheaper than the 4K manufactures are asking for 3D TVs!
cheapest one ive seen is samsungs 46 inch LED which does not look that crash hot, especially considering its three freaking grand!
Well considering i dont have a HD tv yet (long story) i doubt i'll be getting a 3D TV soon. but i'd look into it when im purchasing a HD one.
I've found an extremely cheap 3DTV.
All you do is go outside and tada!!! Instant 3D. This is a stupid gimmick that will not last. I cannot see why people want 3D games when your brain automatically distinguishes depth from 2D images, which is why people get headaches and nausia from the TVs.
I can't wait to play GT5 (so much so that I'm forking out $300 AUD for the signature edition) but I am going to be perfectly happy playing it in good old fashioned 2D.
I can see myself getting into 3D at some point, but not any time soon. You should never get 1st gen of anything, but when there are 2nd/3rd gen 3D projectors out there at about current 2d price levels I might consider upgrading my current pj, but that will take at least another 2-3 years. Until then I'll stick with my 100" 2D screen…
