In order to achieve great things, a game studio must be willing to roll with the punches, work hard, and adapt to fan desires.
In speaking at GamesCom 2010 , Guerrilla Games boss Herman Hulst spoke a great deal about the progression of their critically acclaimed Killzone franchise, which didn't exactly start with a bang on the PS2. Hulst said in those early days, the team was "highly energetic," but lacked "professional leadership and proper structure to guide their vision." Then came that infamous E3 2005 trailer for Killzone 2 , which included pre-rendered graphics designed to portray what the final product would be capable of, and tossed the gaming world into a tizzy. It was really only supposed to be shown in "small, behind-closed-doors settings to select members of the press," but Sony loved that trailer and wanted everyone to see it. Guerrilla took this sign of confidence and ran with it…but Hulst says that trailer was both a "blessing and a burden." The burden was the studio's reputation as liars, while the blessing was a lofty goal "with no room for excuses." Thing is, that trailer was made before they even started making the game. So, with an "ambitious pitch video" but nothing to support it, Guerrilla set out to make something special.
KZ2 turned out to be a smash hit and is widely regarded as one of the best shooters of the generation. But they don't want to stop there; Hulst said after it came out, they adopted "an almost obsessive-compulsive" attitude where they took all the KZ2 reviews, noted every point, broke them up into categories, and assigned a numeric score based on the reviewer's opinions. The plan: take the 5 best-received features and do more with those, and take the 5 worst-reviewed features and either cut them out or fix 'em. Some points in the latter category were enemy AI, death animations, and multiplayer. Since the release of KZ2, Hulst says the team has put "their creativity in a pressure cooker" for KZ3 and that overall, Guerrilla's transformation has been like "putting lightning in a bottle."
Oh, and one last thing: he also confirmed that after Killzone 3 , we can expect news about an all-new IP. That's right; they've started work on a whole new project, and we'll be very interested to learn about it when it gets unveiled. Based on their dealings with the press and their dedicated, no-nonsense approach to game creation, this studio is one of our favorite development teams.
Related Game(s): Killzone 2 , Killzone 3
I hope that it is an rpg, or survival horror. We need some grade a devs working on games like that. But whatever it is I'm sure it will be solid gold
Guerilla doing RPG's…sign me up dude!
Yeah they make a solid game. Most RPG devs have great ideas but their programming skills leave a lot to be desired and have tons of glitches and bugs. Give Guerrilla those ideas and they'd make the prettiest, best looking RPG out there.
Yeah, any hint at the genre would be cool. PS3 could use a new solid RTS.
rts nah
Don't get me wrong, I do prefer playing RTS games on my PC. Though, when done right, it can be a blast playing on the big screen with some friends.
The only 2 good RTS games on PS3 right now are Red Alert 3 and End War. We could use some more.
i do like the red alert series but on pc unless they have mouse support on ps3 i dont think rts games work aswell
There's was stuff wrong with the multiplayer in KZ2? Of all the reviews I read they gave nothing but heaping praise for it. I personally think its one of best this gen myself. Hope they're going to the right sites.
The main problem I had with the multiplayer was the party system. It's pretty bad trying to get a game with your friends, if you're all not the same rank. Easily fixed I'm sure in KZ3!
I find it hard to believe people criticised the death animations and the enemy AI (The friendly AI, maybe).
@frostface
That was easily fixed in KZ2. In fact it was never a problem. The host of the game chooses that option for their "game making". Its not a default setting for KZ2 mp. To me the party system was fine.
Well I appreciate the quality of kz2 and I'm sure I'll appreciate the quality of kz3, but since fps is at the bottom of my list of game genre's to play, I'd be very interested to hear what they're doing with this new IP.
I'd be very welcoming to KZ quality on a non fps game from guerrilla.
admittedly it is very hard to live up to the hype of game especially when it came to killzone 2 i think they pulled it off tho
and as for a new ip that could be interesting…maybe a survival horror or 2rd person action adventure game

There is already a plethora of 3rd person action games, we don't really need more. Besides, with Uncharted and SOCOM 4 around the corner, that's more than enough 3rd person action games.
A survival/horror? I think GG could really knock some socks off with that.
Yup, a GG survival horror would definitely get my vote.
We don't have a plethora of 3rd person shooters.
yeh i would think a survival horror would be brilliant….with co op online 😀
I think only _2nd_ person games are Siren and its sequel, which by co-incidence are horror games.
😉

hehe i ment 3rd lol
@frostface
Yeah, your right. Forgot about that. I was thinking from a gameplay standpoint.
I'd like to see them make a sandbox game, or an RPG ect
KZ4 anyone 🙂
I like Ben's idea of a game like RDR that plays like heavy rain. I would preorder it the day it's announced.
Or maybe a better Shellshock game? Oh, never mind.
I could go for a new IP after KZ3 is finished. I think it's clear they were planning on doing that anyway after the statement about Sony making them do a KZ3. Either way, should be good. And KZ3 is sounding better every time I hear about it.
Peace.
WOAH what was wrong with the AI and death animations in KZ2? It had the most accurate death animations of all time (at least 100) and the enemy AI was the best I've seen.
oh yeah, can't wait to find out what the new IP is. Since they will probably stick with shooters, I wouldn't mind a 3rd person Gears killer.

Yep, the death animations were definitely varied and the AI was top shelf. From what I remember from the reviews, a lot of critics didn't like the lack of color, they thought the story could be more fleshed out, and while most on this site would disagree, I think there were several that didn't like the weightiness of the controls.
I know Guerrilla has already said they're putting more attention to story development and modifying the controls a bit to appeal to a wider audience. I suppose there could be more color but the drabness definitely reinforces the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Then again, I like color.
Maybe Ben meant "former" instead of "latter"?
The only problem I had playing single player mode, was that my own stupid AI team mates would often get in my way while firing, & taking my headshots, instead of the enemy.
Not sure if there was any prob's in MP though, since I don't do those campaigns.
BTW, this was taken from Hermen Hulst's (Guerrilla Games managing director)speech at at GDC Europe,
Guerrilla is looking to expand their repertoire; they can do a lot of things, and that includes âany game we want to make.â
The new project will bring back the âlevel of scope and ambitionâ present when the studio was just starting out.
Hulst also stated that they're building a new studio, plus hiring a lot more new talent too.
Hulst also said the project's in it's âvery early days of conceptualizing what weâre going to do,â and the IP's a PS3 exclusive.
NO need to worry about graphics, everything else will be a surprise!
Am I the only one around here who enjoyed the first Killzone?
Please let there be another one!!
I loved the first killzone, and I loved the second and I'm sure I will love the third. It's not like that if they make something new they will have to stop making killzone as well. I mean look at bioware they are making Mass Effect and Dragon Age at the same time
I loved the first game as well, I was looking forward to KZ2 mostly because I liked the first so much.
