3D gaming technology is in its infancy, and it'll be some time before a good percentage of gamers will have the requisite 3D HDTVs in their living rooms.
But in the meantime, we can learn more about how developers are implementing 3D into certain games like Killzone 3 . GamesRadar spoke to Guerrilla Games producer Steven Ter Heide about the process of utilizing this new technology in one of next year's most anticipated titles. Firstly, he spoke about how "design issues" represented their biggest hurdle when dealing with 3D:
"We can’t speak for other developers but for us it was pretty straightforward. Our content already was fully 3D, as in that the whole world we create already is fully realised in 3D. Everything has depth to it already. On the technology side, we of course have to increase performance in a smart way as we now have to render everything twice, once for each eye. The biggest things we came across were design issues we had not seen before, things like HUD elements or especially the crosshair, where do these ‘live’ on the screen. We have to take depth into account and these unnatural objects now need to feel natural and sit comfortably at the right depth not to become jarring."
Ter Heide goes on to say they knew Killzone 3 would boast a 3D option "from day one." As the team is technically a part of Sony, Guerrilla learned of the 3D initiative immediately and quickly asked Sony for a prototype TV. They went on to focus on enhancing the immersion aspect of the game; Ter Heide said the Killzone series has "always been about immersion" and the technology will really enhance "those elements where we have things crumbling and going off all around you." But there's still a ways to go:
"…we’re not making special content for 3D, we’re just enabling what we’ve always done to be viewed in 3D. Its still early days with the technology, even the movies are still getting to grips with what 3D can offer. So I think we will learn to take better advantage of 3D in the future."
Lastly, Ter Heide was asked what he thought about the cynics who call 3D more of a "gimmick" than anything else. He replied- "It's an optional extra. For those people that enjoy the immersive experience, 3D will greatly contribute to that feeling." Yeah, well, it'll be intriguing to say the least. And remember, we should be able to test that 3D part of KZ3 for you. 😉

I know that PSXE can be overwhelmed with the amount of work that piles up daily… that said, if PSXE needs assistance in previewing 3D content, I will gladly offer my services.
Just one caveat… Tell me where to give you my info to ship the 3D TV.
ur just asking for a 3DTV?
in that case, i would also like a 3DTV with possibly $240 so i can buy all the game coming out this holiday season. CoDBO, GT5, ACB…. thats actually about it.
and a coke 🙂
I don't think we'll be overwhelmed by the amount of 3D content. …and my TV ain't for sale. 😉
You watched anything in 3D yet, Ben?
I paid $2800 for my Panasonic 50" 3D TV. It is insane, but sadly 3D content is still very lacking. I have been waiting patiently for Killzone 2 to come out in 3D like it showed in that one episode of Qore. I am just starting to wonder if they meant it would be Killzone 3 in 3D not Killzone 2.
Denied.
Eh, had to try.
RadioHeader: No. Don't have the glasses yet.
Sad that my cousin won't enjoy KZ3 in 3D, he loves the KZ series. Good thing 3D is an option.
ill get a 3DTV someday… but not yet. not yet….
(recognise the movie reference?)
Gladiator.
Gimmee a TV!
"Next time baby"
(recognize the movie?)
Have they figured out how to let people who wear glasses watch 3D with the 3D glasses? /actual question
i think you have to plonk the 3d glasses on top of your normal glasses for now…which is kind of a pain.
Meh, i have thick black Buddy Hollyish glasses and i didn't find it to be a pain. The glasses were more comfortable fitting over my mine then i thought it would be. Some might have a problem with it, but i found none.
If I had the money for a 3D TV I'd be fine, I just suction cup my contact lenses on 🙂
I thought that would be a problem too because I remember always having problems with those red/blue cardboard 3D glasses; but with this new Real 3D tech in theaters, when I slipped those polarized 3D shades over my regular specs to watch Avatar, I was surprised how comfortable they were.
Something tells me KZ3 will mark the end of either 3D gaming or KZ games. Wasting money on gimmicks is usually the death knell of developers.
I can't speak from experience but it seems that most people who have tried gaming in 3D say it adds considerably to the sense of immersion. If that's true, than to me its more than a gimmick. One of the things that sets gaming apart from other forms of entertainment is immersion. I'm more excited about 3D gaming than 3D movies for that reason. So for all the people who say 3D is a gimmick, but haven't tried playing a game in 3D, consider waiting to pass judgment until you have.
My bet is that Killzone 3 will be the first 3D game to really legitimize 3D gaming.
If this were IW making MW2 3D he would be all over it like a fly on…
…on shiznit. I agree. And even if it is a gimmick, like the man says it's just an option. I agree going with gimmicks can be the death of a game, but only if it relies solely on said gimmick. KZ3 has tons of other things going for it.
Once again WorldEnds, you prove yourself more informed than your peers. KZ3 does indeed have more than 3D going for it and hopefully those things are what keep Guerilla afloat. Still, I certainly don't envy their position as first kid on the block.
I would rather devs have this mindset than what most movie makers are doing.
I hate the "Whew! Look at everything fly at you! Look how it's in 3d!"
I'm sorry but in real life it never looks like everything is flying straight at my face, so why does it have to in a movie or game, just because it's in 3d?
You're not thinking about it the right way. Movies that use the 'pop up' images as their 3D experience don't know what they're doing with it and found out a gimmicky way to get past their technological inadequacies. Movies like Avatar and Step Up do It the right way – adding depth to the film. This depth is even more immersive when playing games.
There is nothing "right" about Step Up.
Furthermore, if something exploded in front of you, things would be flying right at you guaranteed.
Why didn't you like Step Up?
You're absolutely right kraygen. It's not the technology that's not good, it's the people who implement it. They try to turn it into a wow factor instead of just using it to make things more realistic. It's downright annoying to look at and adds nothing but irritation and frustration to the experience.
agreed and as bad as it looks in 3d, it looks even worse when it comes out on video and it's not in 3d anymore.
Well I just got my 3DTV situation setup between my Samsung LED DLP, the Mitsubishi 3D adapter, and the Gefen HDMI Detective. So I say unto GG: Bring it on!! I can't wait to play Killzone 3 in 3D. Hopefully there will be a 3D demo before the game actually releases.
What'd all THAT cost you?
Go to PSN they have some 3D demos there. I know one is MLB The Show let me know, with another post what you think
It only cost me about $2000. I'm using a Samsung DLP with Mitsubishi's 3D adapter and a Gefen HDMI Detective, and some xpand X102 3D glasses. The adapter, glasses, and HDMI detective cost me $318 from Amazon.com and my TV cost me about $1650 from Circuit City 2 years ago. The 3D works great and I get the added benefit of having a big 61 inch screen without having to pay over $3000 for it.
Oh, and as for the 3D demos, Super Stardust HD in 3D is sweet, MLB the show in 3D was pretty good, and Wipeout HD in 3D was pretty good as well. Out of all of them, Super Stardust was my favorite for showing off 3D gameplay.

I wish they would offer 3DTVs at a lower price point than what they are offering now. Every 3D TV I've seen is 37+ inches which drives the price into the thousands. We need sub-$1000 options.
Only if the manufacturers made smaller versions of these TVs. Having the option to purchase a small 22-32 inch 3D TV would be more than enough to convince me to try out the tech.
I suspect consumers will be more likely to try out 3D if the entry point was not a huge investment in itself.

TA-DA!!!

YAY! I love magic!
Not exactly what I meant by sub-1000, but it's a start! Just wish the tech was a lower range like 400-700 dollar range.
Thanks for the link!

Found this too, which may be my cheap solution for access to 3D content.

Can't wait for this game. I just hope getting Platinum isn't as time consuming as the first one. My wife is starting to get sick of hear KZ2 multiplayer in the background. Especially since you can't mute it idiots in one fell swoop.
As for the 3D aspect of it. I'm saving as we speak.
I only logged a few hours of online play, are some of the trophies online-only?
You got a platinum on KZ2, Jawknee?
World, yea there are quite a few. There are four weekly rank Valor trophies and the badges.
I haven't got plat yet. It's taking me a long time. the weekly rank and badges are time consuming.
Hah, I still need my platinum for K2. Only have 3 trophies left which will require about a week or two of playing time.
I was curious because beating the game on Elite is insanely hard. I gave up on the final Radec throne room battle. Between my completely retarded AI partner and random stuff exploding, I gave up after hours and hours of frustration. My original PS3 controller's L3 & R3 analog buttons were pressed so many times the analog sticks don't roll as smoothly.
Pfft like to see the look on my brother's face when I buy this, he'll be like "call of what?". Seriously if he still thinks that game is better in comparison then I'm taking my ps3 back off him.
You know, it dawns on me that Best Buy could sell lots of TVs and PS3s and copies of KZ3 if they just demo the 3DTV with KZ3 running on it. The pyramid of unbought 360 boxes would grow ever larger.
I won't be able to try the 3D but the game is a lock, and FPS is at the bottom of my list of favorite genres.
I don't care about 3D at the moment, sure it'd be nice to have 3D but it's too expensive for me at the moment.
The games are already cutting my wallet down and I haven't even upgraded to HD yet which I might skip to 3D instead but that will be at least 2 or 3 years from now.
I'm buying Killzone 3 for sure, it's promising and I wanna know the outcome of the war.
I wholeheartedly embrace 3D with open arms.
But sadly, my wallet keeps telling me that it's closed for business till 2011.
(Pssst, anyone know where there's a local "Crowbars R Us")???????
