Being a big fan of the franchise, I've been thinking about the future of GTA. Specifically, where exactly we'll be running amok in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto V , which hasn't been unveiled as of yet.
If we look back at the history of the series since GTAIII (when it broke through into elite territory), we see the almost entirely fictional metropolis of Liberty City, a virtual if not wholly faithful recreation of Miami in Vice City , the major cities and vast amount of land out in California (i.e., Los Angeles, San Francisco) in San Andreas , and the surprisingly realistic boroughs of New York City in GTAIV. So I say it's time to go global. I say we need to take advantage of one of the coolest cities in the world, one that is teeming with life, has a very distinct flair, and can go toe-to-toe with any other city in regards to crime, debauchery and fine living from ill-gotten gains…or so I've heard.
That city is Tokyo. Now, the Japanese aren't big fans of GTA – at least, not in comparison to the West – but we could really bring two cultures together in GTAV. In GTAIV, we had Russian immigrants getting their feet wet in NYC; in GTAV, how's about we have some American crime aficionados indulging in absolutely everything Tokyo has to offer? In some ways, I'm picturing a cross between Yakuza and GTA but because we don't want to alienate the Western fanbase, it's probably crucial that we maintain an American focus (i.e., on the characters). It just seems as if the possibilities in Japan's capital are limitless and if Rockstar wanted to expand beyond the boundaries of the city (as they did in San Andreas ), they could even include some of the smaller towns and villages outside Tokyo.
Other potentially great cities could be London, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, Paris, or even Sydney. I just like the idea of GTA finally breaking the boundaries of the US and setting down roots in a whole new country. Of course, I still want GTA to be GTA…don't change that , Rockstar.
gore?
ever heard of Jappanese anime?
some of the Jappanese anime ive seen makes GOW3 look like a kids game!
some twisted, sick gory crap in there!
I think it's time to 'cross the border' for the GTA-franchise. I loved every GTA-game came out and played them nearly to death (don't wanna know how much of my life I've spent to them) – I liked Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas an the new Liberty.
But now the series needs someting new, something revolutionary, as nice as all the American cities were, GTA needs kind of new atmosphere, new characters, new mentality – a new culture to build the same old sarcastic and ironic way of life on it. The same authentic characters, improved car-steering and weapons.
I like Ben's idea of a Tokyo setting, sound good to me. But I've never let down the experience of GTA:London all those years ago. London would be great. But even other European cities could be a good base for virtual-crimes, think of some russian outback or italian influence (Roma, where the mafia is 'born'!) to the game. I've read something about Berlin, but Germany for me won't be a good setting, even if I'm born here (yip, that's the reason for all those wrong lines). Germany indeed delivers a working crime-scene, but for GTA it would not work. Noop.
Personally, I would deny South America, 'cause Rockstar still working on Max Payne 3, which is settled down there – don't think they would use it for GTA V too.
Thanks for reading. ^^

SYDNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now that would be so cool!
but that will never happen so i guess ill have to settle for GTA vice city 2.
but than that will never happen either, so i guess ill have to settle for a HD collection.
speaking of open world games the mafia 2 demo came out today, just finished playing it.
besides the graphics im really impressed!
the graphics though are really disappointing, i mean this games been in development for over 4 years and it looks ok.
the walls, cars, roads, signs, everything really lacks detail, everything looks really low res!
hopefully this is a old build or something.
im getting it for the PC though, so hopefully that will fix things up.
the physics engine and the AI were a standout though, the way the cars explode or cement chipping of walls was really impressive!
even the AI is really good, they dont sit in one spot they try and flank you and draw fire.
Having been to Tokyo a few years back I've gotta admit, that would be a great place. What a city that is! Big and hi-tech. In San Andreas CJ took a Lear jet to Liberty City. I would love for the GTA 5's story to start in London then he flies to Tokyo and then flies back to Miami Vice City! By the way I bet the next protaganist will be a Female!
You heard it hear first! Imagine a hottie female character. We've had american, european, black, dominican. I think its time they mix it up with a sexy female lead. What do you think?
How about a completely custom character??
GTA: vatican city. You get to preform drive by blessings. Youll also have to keep all the heathens away from the popemobile. Side missions could include cover up as many molestation scandals as possible in 5 mins, convert the atheists, spreading the word of God and making people think there religion is wrong, payoff the alter boys and transfer the priest.

If it was set in Australia it should be Grand Theft Auto: Melbourne, not Sydney, sydney is lame
How about Jamaica?? (No, she let me!!)
GTA:Kingston!!!!
GTA windy city, or vice city 2
I really don't like liberty city, I much prefer vice city, with all the great things to do that san andreas had. I wanna go sky diving again, but over miami.
Lord knows how many thumbs down I will get for saying this, but I think that they could make another GTA set in Liberty City. Not for another few years though, only this time it would HAVE to be FULL size, and all of the cars statistics would HAVE to be correct. They would really haveto tune everything up and make it almost 1:1. Sadly, I think the only way that would ever happen is if it was PS3 exclusive, and I really cannot see that happening! Stupid XBOX letting us all down 😉 I personally think that GTA4 was more like a test for them, just to see what they could do this generationg, and now they know. Where in for one hell of a ride!
And man, do I weant to see some REALISTIC gore in this game!
I would like a map as big if not bigger than SA, and i ould like it to be like a SW USA-mexico border drug cartel, make it to the top from the bottom, like all the others
