THQ has made it clear that they will only collaborate with top talent in the near future. Well, movie director Guillermo del Toro certainly qualifies.
It was first reported by MTV News that the "Pan's Labyrinth" director was teaming up with a "big video game company" to work on multiple projects. Now, the Los Angeles Times says the game company in question is THQ. The announcement should come in a few weeks time; the games del Toro are apparently working on are "technically and narratively very interesting" (as one might expect). For the record, THQ has yet to reveal anything on the issue but del Toro's involvement in this industry isn't exactly revolutionary. Film legend Steven Spielberg already worked with EA to deliver the colorful Wii puzzle games, Boom Blox and Bash Party . In all honesty, we're hoping del Toro is a bit more ambitious in regards to taking advantage of all the technology this industry currently has to offer. But we really don't know what these projects are; none of them may come to any PlayStation product.
By the way, if you haven't seen "Pan's Labyrinth" on Blu-Ray, you're definitely missing out. It's one of my favorites.
lets hope that whatever he makes is better than Hell Boy 2. That movie was terrible.
Though I could see konami giving him the reigns of silent hill being a good idea, due to his ability to come up with some truely weird stuff. Though that won't ever happen due to his being at THQ
Although I can't say I thought Hellboy II was awesome, I can definately say the creatures he made in it were impressive. Death in Hellboy II is probably one of the most impressive non-cgi things I've ever seen in a movie.
I would certainly be happy if he worked on a Silent Hill game, i reckon he has what it takes to fix the series.
Seemed like he didn't really care about Hell Boy 2. The movie was so half assed compared to the first.
Del Toro is one of my top favorite filmakers of the past 10 years. Blade 2, Hellboy 1 & 2, Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage (He really oversaw, and supervised it, and relied on junior directors which he seems to be doing more so these days), and am sure, a bunch of others released overseas that haven't seen. They all have several major aspects in common with each other. They are highly visual, imaginative, even grotesque, with great emphasis on screen assets, makeup, and special effects, yet at the same time they are musefully thoughtful, dramatic, and with pronounced personality. Most importantly, his work often defies genres. Part drama, part suspense, part horror, part comedy, part fantasy, part sci-fi…The whole spectrum is there, interwoven seemlessly and surprisingly natural. He doesn't hold back. And if the studios won't give him what he needs to paint his masterpieces, he walks off.
Balderdash!
Your statement is quite the oxymoron.
Foxy Moron as we say here in Australia…
it would only be something be amazingly imaginative? please make it outstandingly imaginative thank you
Sweet, maybe now THQ can offer up a game I'm interested in. Well, Devil's Third is mildly interesting to me, but that's all. I just realised, I've been really negative lately. Gotta fix that somehow.
Peace.
I bet one of them will be a game tie-in for his upcoming In the Mountains of Madness movie. Which was revealed recently that James Cameron will help produce.
Meh, James Camerons last good movies were True Lies and T2.
SWEET!
THQ have become my favorite 3rd party publisher, every single one of there games are fantastic!
devils third looks epic to say the least!
red faction Armageddon looks 10 times better than RFG and i really enjoyed that!
hopefully ones a survival horror game, we really are in a drought of horror games.
the last game that i could really call scary would be doom 3.
the last game i could call really, really, REALLY spine tingling pants wetting scary would be the suffering back on the ps1 for gods sake!
scariest game ive ever played!
I strongly suggest trying out Dead Space if you haven't already. The atmosphere is near perfect and it certainly has the creepy.
This doesn't surprise me. THQ blows so of course you would like them. "best 3rd party dev evah!" hahahahaha

Hahahahahahaha! Irony strikes again!
Not all horror games (or films) have to have cheap thrills where something jumps out at your from the closet. The great ascept of Dead Space is the isolation, how it has hardly any cut scenes or pause menus, your in the moment. Another one would be Silent Hill 2, that games superb design haunted be for months, i'm still hesitant to play it.
If you like moments that make you jump, i recomend Preoject Zero II: The Crimson Sisters (in the US its called Fatal Frame II)
The Suffering was a PS2 game
no, you do need something to jump out at you to scare you.
atmosphere is one thing, atmosphere is creating the tension, making you feel uncomfortable, making you want to not play the game anymore.
for example i could not play doom 3 at night with the speakers on it just created unbearable tension!
to actually be scared, you need something to jump at ya, thats why dead space never scared me it just got me ready for the scare.
the suffering was on ps2, but the original game, the one i played was on the original playstation.
And so here comes a "HollyWood" person that actually see's the potential in gaming. Guillermo definately has the creativity to make something interesting.
I remember I once read an interview with him talking about videogames. He said one of his all time favorite games was Shadow of the Colossus. I think this definately seems to be a good omen.
This is really great news. Guillermo del Toro is very impressive and one of my favorite things about his movies is how much he uses make up and costuming over cgi for his monsters. They always look better.
Pan's Labyrinth is an amazing movie, I bought it on blu ray for real cheap thinking it looked interesting and man, it was great. It's original, something most movies are missing.
Can't wait to see what he can do for gaming. Especially since I haven't been overly impressed by some of THQ's line up.
Ugh, why THQ? try haven't put out a good game…like ever.
You should watch the Orphanage Ben. Another good one by Del Toro.
Not really true. Red Faction: Guerrilla is only one example of a great THQ game this generation. They're just more under-the-radar.
I tried Red Faction. I just couldn't get into it. It felt really generic. The follow up seems even worse. A buddy of mine loves the first one though.
The Smackdown Wrestling games used to be create, pretty much revolutionised the character creation in games we see today.
honestly, how can you not be excited for the new RF game?
its so different to other shooters, 99% of shooters you just duck under cover and take everyone out from there but this one actually lets you use your creativity!
come on if using the nano forge to fire a magnet on a enemy, than firing another magnet on a strip of steel causing the steel to go flying face planting into the enemy does not get you excited than DAM what does!?
