Uncharted Movie Stumbles, Loses Intended Director

One might expect that fans of the franchise in question would be disappointed in this news, but given Hollywood's track record of turning games into movies, they're probably indifferent.

According to the Los Angeles Times , the intended director for the "Uncharted" movie has ducked out of the project. It seems that negotiations between Columbia Pictures, the film's producers and director David O. Russell (responsible for "I Heart Huckabees") have fallen through. We heard back in May that Russell and Co. would be working on bringing the fantastic PlayStation 3 series to the big screen, but now, it seems they're starting over "and considering a different approach." This time, they may first attempt to get some star power for the male and female leads in the movie before hunting for a director. But whatever the decisions, it seems inevitable now that the movie will be delayed until 2012 or even later. Some questioned the choice of Russell for this particular gig and there might be better fits out there… As for stars to play Nathan Drake and Elena and/or Chloe, we can use our imaginations. And if you're thinking about the real voice of Drake, Nolan North, he has already said he's no big-screen actor.

So it seems we'll have to wait a while longer before we get another update on the "Uncharted" movie. In the meantime, let's look forward to Uncharted 3 news, shall we?

i personally feel like Cronenberg would be a great fit for a movie like this. his fast paced style fits the game. he tells a great action story. plus, with cronenberg could come viggo. viggo might be able to pull off nathan drake if he darkened his hair. worst case he could do a supporting role. i think it is a starting point. for his friend, i cant think of his ally but the guy from Burn Notice would work. Actually i think both of them minus the woman who plays fiona would work. michael donovan could pull off a great nathan. any doubts of his chops? check out changeling.

Personally I'd put faith in Christopher Nolan or Joss Wedon if it has to be done. That's 2 directors I can really get behind.

Not sure who I'd pick for the actor, but if they show up with someone like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt I'll roll my eyes and look for something else to watch.

I'll be honest, I just want to keep PLAYING the movie…I don't need anything live-action.

Good call, I didn't know David O'Russel directed Three Kings, that was pretty good and definitely more similar to Uncharted. At first I was thinking, "damn, I liked I Heart Huckabees but the whole feeling was so different than Uncharted".

Regardless, I'm with the majority. The games are already like movies in the best way possible, while still being games, and it seems highly unlikely that anything good can come from trying to make a movie out of them. Color me skeptical.

This is too bad, I think Russell made a good fit. I loved "Three Kings" (which I think makes a better reference for his work rather than Huckabee's imho).

I describe the games as Jason Bourne meets Indiana Jones so I'd vote for Matt Damon or Mark Wahlberg as Drake.

For extra fun check out this outtake of russell from huckabee's. be warned *NSFW*

Yup, that describes me perfectly.

This stuff happens all the time. It's just buisness. They'll find a new director. Question is will it be a good director. As for who could play the characters in the film. If they don't get Nathan Fillion as Drake then no dought the movie will be crap. I also pic Harrison Ford as Sully. It only makes sense. Think about it.

I think it would be a wrong idea to make a movie… Please leave Uncharted as is Sony!

Before they go down the Street Fighter movie franchise, they should really consider a AAA director before anything.

thats not a bad thing, to be honest i really can count the amount of good movies released this gen on one hand!
let alone the amount of good movies based on video games!
last thing i want is to see a classic butchered, like what poor sub zero and co had to put up with!

Honestly I don't care if they make the movie or not but if they do, there is one non-negotiable aspect and thing that they better not F up. Only one thing has to be right for me. THEY BETTER get a chick to play Chloe with a sexy hot ass just like in the game. Aside from Sheva Alomar, Chloe has the sexiest video game body I've ever seen! Sometimes in the multiplayer I get shot because I'm busy watching her butt when she's running. If they get some flat assed chick to play Chloe then I'll just stick to the game.
