Good ideas tend to catch on. It's why Sony and Microsoft are attempting to emulate Nintendo in the motion-sensing department (emulate and one-up them, of course, but it's still emulation), and why every action/adventure game wants to be like Uncharted .
This must also be why EA wanted to make a game like LittleBigPlanet . Today, EA has announced a new game centered on the concept of player creation, imagination, and artistic ability; it's called Create and it sounds eerily similar to Media Molecule's innovative smash hit. In EA's project, "players design environments with easy-to-use brushes and tools, including textures, props and animating objects that bring games to life." Unsurprisingly, this will be available on all major consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and even MAC), so it'll give non-PS3 owners a chance to play with a Sackboy clone.
Okay, maybe that's unfair to say as we really haven't seen much of Create besides a few screenshots and besides, it's a great idea. LBP was a great idea; the concept of giving players immense creative freedom remains a great idea. The question is, with EA's effort landing in time for the holiday season, and with LittleBigPlanet 2 launching at about the same time, what will PS3 owners choose? Does this mark the first showdown in the new "player-oriented" genre? Said vice president and general manager at developer EA Bright Light, Harvey Elliott:
"Create uses families’ imaginations to develop new ways to play together that are both fun and challenging. We wanted to design a game where […] the only limit is the imagination."
By the way, Create will support the PlayStation Move but there doesn't appear to be any confirmationc concerning Kinect…a nod to Sony's blazing the trail? Sony does seem to be responsible for starting a lot of "measuring-stick" franchises and games everyone else wants to emulate. There's God of War ('cough' EA's Dante's Inferno 'cough'), Gran Turismo , Uncharted , and the genre-bending or even genre-defining unique titles like Team ICO's games, PaRappa the Rapper (say "thank you," Guitar Hero ) and now LittleBigPlanet . …it's akin to the "wanna be like Mike" slogan, or something.
Related Game(s): Create
I'll go with the ones who created and continue to push the genre forward..LBP2 FTW!
Btw, Happy Birthday Ben (if it's still not too late 🙂
ill stick with lbp. unless this shows me a real reason i should pay attention, it just smells of rip off. ill reserve judgement til i have proof.
Heh… even if they did manage to make it like the first LBP (that is what the game sounds like, anyway), they'd have to compete with LBP2, which is far bigger than the first LBP. Maybe the Xbox people would buy it, introduces them to the great 'create-play-share' genre, we have LBP already… but I can't wait for them to try to flaunt it in our faces like it's better than LBP.
So, they're both going to release during the holidays? Unless Create somehow one-ups LBP2 (I fail to see that happening), I'm gonna go with LBP2.
edit- Oh, and Happy Birthday, Ben!

How much you wanna bet the bots will tout this as a LBP killer simply because it's multiplatform? Ha
Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. Just angry.
Speaking of Xbot shenanigans, I followed a link on the US PS Blog to Destructiod. It was an article about Heavy Rain supporting PS Move, and I kid you not, one of the most ignorant things I've ever seen my entire life was written in the comments: "You're wrong (about Heavy Rain being a cinematic gaming masterpiece.). Halo Reach is a cinematic gaming masterpiece, blah blah blah" & "It certainly couldn't be any worse… I love Quantic Dream, so it stung particularly bad when Heavy Rain turned out to be such a disappointment."
I was like 0_0 . And I had to press the x button to close the window, I could not handle the bullshit.
::facepalm::
I try to stay clear of that troll infested forest. Jim is such a moron, the only thing more unbelievable then his idiotic rants and spin for MS are his loyal trolls who follow him around and spew his anti-Sony talking points like scripture.
Though I have noticed he's been getting more flak for his idiocy lately. Maybe people are finally tired of his nonsense.
Create? So original -_- lol
I don't think LBP gets enough credit.
Im getting lbp2 because I have all the dlc. Happy birthday ben.
I have a hard time getting into these "do-it-yourself" games. They sound like too much work.
I get to "design environments" with "brushes and tools"? Sounds about as fun as having to paint my house.
have you actually tried it or do you just think it sounds like work.
Usually games aren't as good as the games that inspired it. But I'll somehow give a try just for curiosity sake.
Lame. Inspiration is one thing, but blatant rip offs are another.
As some said above, I'll stick with LittleBigPlanet.
Well right now is sounds like its a LBP rip off… But i'll still keep an open mind until i see gameplay and see if they actually differ themselves from LBP
I wonder who decided this would be a good idea? Sure it will probably turn a profit, but any ps3 afficionado worth their salt is going with LBP2. The sales numbers are going to be pretty bleak from the ps3 version. I know EA's in bed with Sony right now (according to e3), thats the only reason I think they made a ps3 version.
Hmm, interesting. No, not really. LBP2 is going to be the trump. Here's hoping all the PS3 owners buy that and leave this to the 360ers. No offence to EA, but don't try this… Please.
Peace.
Can xbox do the 'play create share' thing? Doesn't it require a hard drive?
Don't the new 360's come with a 4gb minimum HD? They also have usb slots, and the DLC size limit on xbox Live has been increased. I actually thought MS's policy that is very strict against user-created/shared content would've presented more of an obstacle.
Another alternative solution would be server-side storage, if the content files are small enough. Allocating sufficient resources for the infrastructure would be a risky investment, but perhaps MS could it get covered. But yes, it would be interesting to see how they solve this issue.
But I guess it would not be such a big deal to make a memory card, usb stick, or hard drive a prerequisite for the game.
Thanks guys. I think the three of you managed to clear that one up for me 🙂
NP! I'm glad they managed to keep things civil amongst themselves!
Did you just speak of yourself in the 4th person?
Okay you don't have to answer that. You're already turning the whole page grey. Get a picture already1! A nice happy colourful like mine. sry I'm droinking
Happy Birthday, Ben!
I'm 43 years old so looking at Little Big Planet as a potential purchase didn't interest me because it looks like a kiddie game. Am I wrong? If this "Create" game is geared as a kiddie game too then I would be inclined to pass on this one as well.
sorry dude but your wrong. lbp is not a kids game. kids can play it yes but it has a lot for adults. creating your own levels and playing others is so much fun. i dare you to rent it and try it for a few days. it may look cute but it is very challenging.
Agreed with Frylock. Creating levels in LBP is definitely not child's play.
I thought the same thing, then I played it and laughed my arse off. Worst case scenario it'll make you feel like a kid again.
I've had the game for a long time and there are some items I've yet to unlock. Beating that last stage without dieing is quite difficult.
I also really love the level creation, but it also can be a real challenge, but some ppl make stuff that will blow your mind.
As a soon-to-be 40 yr old (in Oct), I can tell you that LBP is not a kiddie game.
H.B., BEN!!!!!!
It'll be released on the Xbox, but then the xbots will say "bu..bu…but, where are the explosions and the shooting and all the other incredible things that our Halo does?"
And then they'll bash it and go back to their Halo Reach
Bikersaint the past is the past. I let it go and was hoping you could too.
?
Ben what are you 32? Keep on truckin.
Yes, sadly.
First GOW, now LBP. So when is EA going to publish their interactive drama Abundant Precipitation?
LOL
GOW and LBP are the best in their genre, should we be surprised to see others copying them?
As a ps3 and LBP owner who has a lot of LBP content, I don't see the point in getting create and starting all over when I can get LBP2 and keep everything I've done plus get access to an all new creation system.
I also highly doubt that this game will sell well on 360, not unless a few ppl quickly make some shooter levels for all those xbots to play.
Happy Birthday Ben! 32 i hear
A lame name just to let everyone know this is also CPS.
I can really see this failing, any copy of a PS3 exclusive will definitely fail.
I'm goin for LBP2 thanks.
I find it strange that they'll release a ps3 version…
I mean who in their right mind will choose create over lbp2?
SWEET! hopefully this wont have that stupid limited life crap!
I can see it doing well on the 360 and computers. Since any PS3 owner interested in the concept probably already has LBP, I would imagine the PS3 version wouldn't do so well against LBP2.
