It still boggles the mind that the "best version" of Portal 2 will be on the PlayStation 3. Gabe Newell on a Sony stage remains one of the biggest surprises of the year.
But don't think Valve is embracing everything Sony just yet. Team marketing boss Doug Lombardi told PSM3 that if you're looking for the series in question to boast PlayStation Move and 3D compatibility, you'll have to wait for Portal 3 . But even so, Valve is determined to "right the wrongs of its past" in regards to the PS3, and that includes the inferior PS3 port of The Orange Box .
[Having a dedicated PS3 team] allows us to build our PS3 products internally, which we feel is critical for delivering the highest quality version of our products."
We had heard this from Valve before the big announcement; they would often say they needed a team of people who were fully checked out on the PS3 before they would dive into that platform. As for 3D and Move, Lombardi simply said we'd have to "wait for Portal 3 or another title," because next year's hotly anticipated sequel won't support either technology. But that's okay; we don't really need it. We just really need Valve to come through and make good on their "best version" promise.
Oh, and by the way, when asked about the possibility of Left 4 Dead 2 on the PS3, Lombardi just said, "Who knows what the future will bring?" Yeah, well, maybe more zombies to the PS3.
Related Game(s): Portal 2
Portal 2 coming to the PS3 and being the definitive console version was the biggest surprise of E3 in my opinion. And speaking of biggest, I couldn't believe I saw Gabe Newell on PlayStations stage, pretty exciting news. P2 was the biggest game @ E3 for a reason, it is shaping up to get one of the most amazing puzzle-adventure experiences of 2011.
I felt Gabe showing up on the PS stage at E3 was more like a public apology. I really can't imagine how much "better" they would make a multiplatform game over Xbox's version.

@godsman
He was saying it will be better because of the ability to update using Steam tech. Xbox won't allow it. It doesn't seem like much, but it was enough to start tilting the scales a bit.
What Neo said. We get the best version because we get Steam. This will be great for people who already have Steam accounts like me. 🙂
Knowing the console has an HDD makes a huge difference in how a dev can tackle updates and upgrades.
I dont think Gabe was saying the ps3 version would be technically superior as in higher res textures or anything, but better as in a more completely package, comparable to the pc version (which i'll be getting anyway. mods are awesome).
They needed to "apologize" to the PS3 community by bringing us Portal 2. That's not to say they're done kissing up to us just yet.
They've been burning bridges with Sony from the start, so they have a lot to make up for.
can somebody tell me what steam is?
Its a networking tool that allows you to purchase and manage your games as well as interact with your friends among a whole lot of other things like automatic updates, .downloads etc. Its much like the PSN but with a butt load more content and full games we only see on disc. Though i don't purchase any games on Steam as i prefer physical media to digital. It was great because i had a Steam account way back and hadn't used it in a few years. when i finally got another PC good enough to play games on i tried to install Counter Strike. It wouldn't work. When i finally got my Steam account unlocked i was able to download and install Counter Strike for free because it remembered i purchased the disc version back when i was in college. Pretty cool.
Not sure how Steam will work on the PS3 though but i am excited to see what Valve will do with it.

"I may look nervous right now because Kevin Butler was introduced to me backstage as the VP of sharpening things."
LOL!!!
would be neat having left for dead 2 but it was enough for Gabe to have the guts to go onstage and apologize and thank sony for their help
L4d2 on PS3 would kick A$$
cant wait for portal 2, but i dunno if im getting it for PS3 or steam.
(just for organizational purposes i usually have valve games for PC mainly)
I hope the re-vamp the graphics and the loaad time. They are horrible. It was the one reason the orange box was a minor disappointment to me.
As someone who still plays the very inferior version of Team Fortress, I have got to say I was just plain giddy when he took the stage. I always hated his view on ps3, but they make some fun games. Yeah, I'd love to see more zombies, but I'm pretty sure when they announce the next Team Fortress, I may pee myself a bit.
Who cares about 3D and Move if they can just get past the first milestone of releasing a great PS3 game and not simply a slip-shod port? Not me. I hope this turns out well.
It's not that big of a deal that P2 won't support these newer technologies, however it seems like the type of game that could really benefit from it. (never thought about it when making that move thread..)
I never played the first game but i may give this one a try. Its is kind of exciting knowing the PS3 is getting Steam support.
Offtopic, i just downloaded the new Crysis 2 trailer on PSN, seriously, this game is supposed to blow peoples socks off in the graphics dept? The game doesn't even hold a candle to Killzone 2.
Its a great game if you can pick it up for under 10$. If not then let it
pass- It's not that good.
I said the same thing when i saw it…crytek full of sheet sometimes.

I'll have to check that out, I knew they were making fraudulent claims. It's a multiplat for crysis-out-loud.
By no means is it bad(its not great either in my opinion), but to say Crysis 2 will be graphically superior or on par with PS3 exclusives or to claim this game will set a new graphical bar is asinine.

Acutally, Crysis on PC was pretty amazing, and it did come out a little before Killzone 2. Most PCs couldn't run it at the time cos the tech in it was so advanced.
BTW, the cinematics shown for Crysis 2 was running on a 360, hence the shoddy look of it. Hopefully the PC version will be vastly improved in the graphics department.
If you check out early concept videos, Crysis 2 has a 3 screen comparison video in HD for the PS3, 360 and PC versions of each game.
PC – looks amazing!!!
PS3 – Slightly scaled down, but still looks great!!
360 – looks like a hi-res version of Black from the PS2.
It looks average at best judging from the new PSN trailer. I'm sure the PC version will look pretty damn good but as far as the console versions go, its not even close to the PS3 exclusive killer the Xbots are making it out to be.
They haven't seen anything close to that level yet so they belive that it is PS3 quality.
still hate yah gabe
Spread the hate like butter on a Gabe Burger 😉
lol
At least he was gracious enough to thank Sony for not repeatedly punching him in the face.
dunno if id pay 60.00 for a portal game though? I mean there isnt that much different in between levels
I still have a hard time imagining a "dedicated ps3 team" in Valve.
The "team" is really a few guys they keep locked up in the basement of the building. there they have them fend for themselves with only a DS3 as a tool.

Bugzbunny,
If I remember right, I believe that Valve went outside their company & brought a bunch of guys in that were already well versed on the PS3, to show them the ropes.
I wasn't talking about hardware wise. I was meant that after how they down talked the ps3, how could they be dedicated to working with it?
some ppl learn from their mistakes and move on.
I haven't been gaming on Steam for that long. And I already have Left 4 Dead 2 through them. But I would buy the game again for the MUCH friendlier PSN community. As for Valve is "wait for Portal 3" and official announcement?
I hope the meaning "TOP QUALITY" to them means better frame rates and smooth action game play. Hopefully steam will pull this one off good.
Not interested in the game but it would be nice to see Valve and Gabe at the very least stop being douchebags publicly. Though I have a zombie obsessed friend who would go to great lengths to get L4D on his PS3 so maybe there is hope for him.
same here, i love killing zombies, so L4D kind sounds good, he can probably put both 1 and 2 L4D games on one blu ray
Yeah, they might as well put them on a single disc, I think 2 is just part 1 with a few different textures anyway.
Agreed, not interested at all!!
Never played a valve game as I don't have a gaming pc and I don't spend money on crappy ports. If P2 is all great and wonderful on ps3, then I'll see it in the reviews and then I'll consider giving it a buy.
However fps isn't my thing, and neither are puzzle games really, so a mixture of the 2 doesn't exactly scream winner to me.
im very happy with them that they are gonna make portal 2 awesome for the ps3. it is one of the best games ever…
PS3 support, oh yeah!
Here's hoping Left 4 Dead 3 comes to the PS3 and with story!!
Sony easily had the best E3 show, from a games and technical standing point. I mean, they got Gabe on the Sony stage announcing Portal 2 on PS3 being the best console version!!!!! Who on earth saw that coming!?!?!
The only reason Nintendo won best show was cos they played the nostalgia card with an adult hardcore gaming audience, using childhood games and icons like Mickey, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid, Goldeneye and Kirby. The 3DS was a pretty big deal too, but Sony is taking 3D large scale, not just to handhelds.
At least Kevin Butler broke the monotony with some comedy. There's only so much tech news and announcments you can take over a 3 day period.

Portal was awesome. Can't wait for this one.
again best CONSOLE version.
only reason why he said that is because M$ wont allow steam on the 360.
i remember reading late 2008 i think it was that valve were hiring ps3 programmers, building up a ps3 team for a big unannounced project.
they said once that first game came out, all valve games will be on the PS3.
which is just common sense, they would not spend all that cash hiring new people for just one game!
so now, the first part has come true, maybe the second one will?
they also said half life 2 epp 3 will be out late 2011!
so half life 2 epp 3 coming to ps3 in a store near you!
only question now is will L4D see a port?
id say no, because either M$ owns the IP rights, or its really too old.
i cant see L4D 1 or 2 because there too old, and i cant see L4D 3 coming on ps3 unless 1 and 2 come also.
id be first in line to buy a L4d collection as long as its not heavily edited here!
i dont get it!
blowing a zombies head off with a shotgun, covering the screen in blood in L4D2 is not ok for a MA rating.
slicing a zombies arms, legs than head off with a chainsaw on the end of a pole, with copious amounts of blood spraying everywhere in dead rising 2 is fine for a MA rating.
WTF?
go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dead rising 2 is 500 times gorier than L4D2, so you would think DR2 would get banned but you would think wrong!
GOW3 is suitable for a MA rating, but L4D2 is not.
the inconsistency of the OFLC is baffling!
"[Having a dedicated PS3 team] allows us to build our PS3 products internally, which we feel is critical for delivering the highest quality version of our products."
Which is why MOST developers started to build a PS3 team BEFORE the PS3 arrived, instead of three years AFTERWARD.
[sarcasm]Watch it be the worst port of 2010[/sarcasm]
I have high hopes for this. It would be nice to experience portal on the PS3 without having to upgrade my entire computer again.
