If you ask certain developers, they will insist that 2D ain't dead yet. And they're not just talking about portable gaming devices.
You may not be aware, but Blade Kitten is coming soon to the PlayStation Network. And even if you're not intrigued by the colorful, semi-original action slasher, you'll at least be interested in the comments by Krome Studios senior programmer Chris Fowler, which he posted at the PlayStation Blog . Admittedly apprehensive at the idea of working with the PS3, Fowler says he's now a big fan of Sony's machine. Initially, the game was both a 3D and 2D adventure that would allow you to switch between both perspectives instantly but at some point, the team "fell in love" with the 2D version so they decided to focus entirely on that. Added Fowler:
"This proved to be one of the best decisions we made. For example, the level where Kit is running away from a huge monster called Acland, who destroys everything in his path, was completely scripted by the designers — as were all our bosses and many of the encounters you see. This has allowed for a much more flexible design with changes being quick and easy. But most importantly, much happier designers!
Being able to move any object anywhere and have our characters move along with them was fundamental to our game, so we made it so Kit can attach to pretty much everything. If the object moves or rotates, so does she. The level designers have done a great job using this and, even from the first level, you will see some fun movement and puzzles you can play with using these moving objects."
Basically, the game caused them to alter their implementation of artificial intelligence. The amount of effort and intricacy involved with this project is quite encouraging, and we're definitely looking forward to playing the final product. Fowler goes on to talk more about the process so if you're into behind-the-scenes info, you should definitely read it all.

I lost interest in this game the moment it became multiplatform. Its more than off putting to have a game announced for one platform and then months later it ends up as a multiplatform.

I must say I completely agree
I smell fanboyism in that comment.
You should want the game if it's good, not just cos it's exclusive to your favourite console. Going multiplat is the lamest excuse to no longer getting it.
In all honesty, these kinds of comments are borderlining Xbot mentality. I would hate to see that here. I like people with an open mind or who can support a good argument, or have good reason for getting or not getting games apart from it being exclusive or not.
Thumbs down for you.
I don't know what you're smelling because I felt the same way when games like Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, Tales of Vesperia, Braid, and Ninja Gaiden II (this might not be the same since NGS2 was a alternative remake instead of a port) lost exclusivity. I don't like the move done on either console.
While I own a few multi-plat games and enjoy them, I do agree that anything going multi-plat has the potential to take away from the experience… No matter what the original platform is.
We've seen multi-plats look better on 360 and others look better on PS3. 2 examples: FFXIII was better on PS3 and Bayonetta was better on XBOX360. Both could have potentially been better to their native platform only.
I'm glad they chose to do one or the other, switching between 2d and 3d sounds like it would have been a little weird.
Even tho, I'll wait for a review, doesn't sound like my kinda thing.
I'm anticipating a release date. Been watching the evolution of this game and it looks like a lot of fun.
This game fails in name alone. They expect me to give them money for something they named "Blade Kitten?"
And Call of Duty sounds any better?
I don't think the appeal of this title is going to be its realism or believability.
You'd not purchase a game based on the name?
Would you give them money if they called the game "Shank Pussy" instead?
To be fair, "Deathspank" is a name that makes me go "Oh dear"
true but the demo for deathspank, sure made me roll my eyes and laugh.
Love the anime style
Great to see a 2D game (2D games need to make a big comeback). Proud of Littlebigplanet for staying 2D.
The physics and AI sound really deep and interesting. I'll definitely check this out.
But will see, want a psxe review of this
I'm gonna keep an open mind on this one, needs to pass the PSXE test first though. I don't have a big beef that this is multiplat, but I'd like to hear why Fowler had a problem with Sony's epic machine. Sounds kinda like he commands a bunch of lazy crappy developers.
I'm a tad upset we aren't getting the new 2D Castlevania. Grrr.
Agree with you there World.
1. Shouldn't matter if it's multiplatform, so long as the game is good and fun to play.
2. Developers shouldn't be afraid to ask for help when working with Sony's machine. They'll tell you all the same thing, "The PS3 isn't difficult, it's just different from old tech we're used to working with." And Sony developers are more than happy to help others make great games for PS3, just look at Naughty Dog!!
Anyone else hoping 2D gaming makes a comeback?
I am!
Bring back the engaging 2D experience back!
Sometimes 3D can get boring.
With 2D you've got a lot going on
3D sometimes has too much space…which in turn can sometimes can become boring/dull
2D action platformer?
MY PARERS HAVE FINALLY BEEN ANSWERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think all of our PARERS have been answered.
