Demon's Souls is one of those games that can take a lot of time. But Atlas is well aware of that fact.
Atlus has announced that they will continue their online support of Demon's Souls , the role-playing phenomenon that has captured the hearts of RPG fanatics and critics alike. This support will continue through March 2011 and to celebrate, they've switched the online world over to Pure Tendency, which makes the game a bit easier for newcomers. Said Aram Jabbari, PR and Sales Manager for Atlus:
"We are proud to maintain our commitment to the Demon’s Souls online community by extending our support for the game’s servers, allowing current and new players to continue to enjoy the game’s vast online feature set. One of the highest-rated, most talked about games of all time, Demon’s Souls is defined by its groundbreaking online functionality. No other game better marries suspenseful, claustrophobic solitude with unprecedented cooperative and competitive multiplayer connectivity. Each game world, each individual’s adventure, can be bridged with those of others’, making for one of the most startlingly grand yet deeply intimate RPG experiences ever created."
And by the way, if you haven't signed on yet for the experience, you can grab Demon's Souls for the very agreeable price of $29.99. For what many call the greatest RPG of the generation, that's one hell of a steal…just be ready to handle one of the most challenging games available! If you can push through and emerge victorious, you'll receive quite the feeling of fulfillment and pride.
What happens after March 2011? Do they just stop maintenance or close down the server completely?
They come to your house and steal your copy of Demon's Souls.
They can try…
… and they steal your soul while they're there, and make it their slave.
@Ben, You have won my post of the day! lol
They can try but I'm so soul leveled up I think I can take em on with my Lava Bow and upgraded Cresent Kiji+5 curved blade

As a big fan of the game, those are some pretty darn nice weapons.
And this is precisely why games should only have Multi-player that is an add-on and not a core component. Companies can't keep servers up forever, it costs money. Devs need to ensure that online multi-player gaming either requires very little (or zero) server commitment from the developer/publisher, or the online component is not core so taht when support for it disappears, the game can stand on it's own.
That is a very good point I have to say Highlander…
My greatest fear is that actual online multi-player will become such a money making possibility for these companies that they may end up actually charging to components entirely for the same game.
You have to spend to buy the game and play the single player, and then you must purchase the multi-player component and probably subscribe to continue enjoying it!!!
I really fear we will have a split gaming community as the suits at the top devise more creative ways of extracting cash from our pockets…
I will resist it with all my will power… even stop being a gamer if charges and costs become ridiculous…

Damn straight.
You are right Highlander. To this day, I never really thought of online servers as such a hassle for devs. I wish there was a no-cost solution for them so they could keep the servers going forever. Sometimes I just love going into Demon's Souls for some good PvP action. It would be sad to know that I couldn't do that. Especially with the news that there will be no DS 2 coming out. 🙁
Some games use a system of peer hosting with almost no server requirement. Basically your console or mine, or another player in the session acts as host. That works really well and doesn't require a big investment from the publisher. Publishers don't mind continuing support or games with such minimal needs.
Ah man, after that date Demons Souls will be near impossible to beat…
Wasn't it already near impossible to beat?
The game has this reputation of being hard, usually an attractive element for me.
I remember when I rented it, the guy at Blockbuster was warning, nearly insisting, that the game was real hard and not worth playing because of it, as if it was a subtle cue to take it back to the shelf and indulge in more twitch'n instead. I rented it anyway and got passed a big blob of goo with spears (only after I had died 50 thousand times to a tough glowing eyed dude on some castle walkway…. before I realized "I don't have to kill him, yet")
Haha. I know the guy you are talking about Temjin. That move where he runs with the spear will get you every damn time…
Is the guy I sold my copy to still around here? I forgot his SN, just wondered if he is enjoying it.
You sold demon's souls? Did you sell a regular copy to get the collector's edition?
No, I just couldn't deal with it. I no longer have the time to spend two or more hours dying in the same spot.
really with demon's souls if you're dying in the same spot for 2 hours, then you need to go elsewhere and level up.
It's like in ff7 you don't go take on ultima weapon at level 20, you gotta get some good gear and stats first.
What does this mean?
Does this mean after March 2011 they'll stop the server and then there won't be online play for Demon's Souls anymore?

I thinking of buying this game should I? I really want to play it.
Yep. You missing out on alot if you didn't get it yet
lol, that's hard to answer. Most people on this board will yell YES. But be wary, the game is unbalanced and is in the mold of the games of old where the reason people love it is because of the sense of accomplishment you get after getting past multiple "impossible" areas. After I died about 125 times I just sold it, I personally don't have the patience. I already went through that stage of gaming in my life, so if you are a masochist that loves that rewarding feeling then yeah grab it.
125 times? Wow. I am actually glad I didn't purchase the game now.
I, like you, are past that stage of gaming now.
Sounds like I'll be a better gamer after I play this game. Or did Atlus put this game out here and said, if you can beat this, wait and see how hard the second one will be. I'm playing Rouge Galaxy right now. and sometimes don't you missed the old gaming days, where it's just you or a buddy playing a single play game at your house or his, with beer and some chips and dips.

It's balanced. It's just like any other RPG you have to plan what you are going to use what weapons, spells, healing items what route to take etc. You have to watch out what monsters you fight as well, they are weak to piercing attacks and may be extremely resistant to slash attacks.
It's pretty simple, you also have to upgrade your weapons, you can't use the same weapon through the entire game. (it's possible but it'll take alooong time)
@ world
I'm still dying….
And i'm still pretty early in the game.
I don't understand the unbalanced comments. Some monsters are much stronger than others but isn't it like that in every game and isn't that the way it should be?
Some monsters are strong against magic, some against melee, and yes some monsters in the first level can be impossible to beat early on, but the way the levels are designed is so that you can return to any level at any time and still find a challenge.
Like the knight that charges you and kills you in one hit at the beginning, you don't have to fight him, you can go back later and rip him a new one instead of the other way around.
The character options are unbalanced, you might think "yeah I'm gonna be a bad assed knight who is tough" then the game is like "Oh no you ain't" – KADOOOZH!!! BAM! POW!
I found it to be a lot about timing, like the games of old, if you don't hit your button at the correct millisecond your blow will be too early or too late.
I'm not ripping on it, it's a quality game, and I'm sure when the fans wake up tomorrow they will blast this thread and me but I'm just stating how I saw it, and I didn't get far, so do with that what you will.
"Like the knight that charges you and kills you in one hit at the beginning, you don't have to fight him, you can go back later and rip him a new one instead of the other way around."
After MANY attempts, I ripped him a new one just yesterday. Only to find that the door at the end was locked! Son of a…..
Yeah getting past that knight, you after you get the key will only get you a boss fight that will most likely hand you your butt any way.
@ world
As for the knight being slow and what not, yeah thats because your loaded with heavy items. It works very simply, the more weight you carry the slower you move. If you're carrying more than half the max weight you can carry you slow down quite a bit, so since the knight starts out with very heavy armor he is slow. If you're not wearing armor you're quick on your feet.
It doesn't actually matter what starting class you pick as they can all be leveled in the same way. Any class you pick if they get too much weight they slow down.
I find these comments to be very helpful, thank you very much, well i'm gonna buy the game for some reason, i want to kill that knight that gives everyone a hard time…i'm excited for the challenge as well, I'll let you know how well i do in the game

Good thing you can play this game completely offline. Although the online bits always added to the atmosphere.
And come on people… The games not THAT hard.
Yeah especially if you get the hang of it on the easy guys and figure out that you don't have to try to kill something as soon as you find it. If it kills you super easy, come back later when you're beefier.
In allllll honesty the game was very easy. Yea I died a few times, but never as much as people made me believe I would die. I died probably as much as GoW3 on the second hardest lvl, so it wasn't that much(at least to me). I never got that sense of fulfillment that Ben talked about and it still bugs me till this day. I can't remember the last game I played that gave me that feeling. Games are losing it unfortunately 🙁

Umbasa
Man I love this game so much, if it wasn't for the fact that there are so many games I've missed out on, I'd play it more often than I do. I'm still only at level 154, only like 800 and some odd levels to go.
Sad that the servers will ever have to be taken down, especially since there will be no Demon's Souls 2.
Same here….and I still go back to it lol, it's just too good to let go.
$30?
You guys are lucky, get the game already.
Atlus is being nice by placing the servers in Pure White Tendency.
They could have easily gone ahead and made the servers Pure Black Tendency (10 times harder).
I must say it IS strange that they have already said there won't be a Demons Souls 2. If they made it a franchise the sales (which were triple what was expected) would grow even bigger. What's From Software making now that's better?
i believe i shall be getting this sooner than later.
Well, after watching some of the gameplay video of the castle level, it really does look like a superb title…
Please explain though why Demon Souls' online support will be extended only until March 2011? Is it fact that if I bought the game in the fall this year, but next year, my online experience is no more…
How can that be?

Any future DS would squarely be up to Sony as they own the rights to the IP, not From Software. Other than that if any future sequels are made I highly doubt it would be made my FS other becoming a internal project….
gotta love flamelurker 🙂 my fav boss I finished my first playthrough in 16 hours with a soul level of 69 my class was wanderer. once you are used to the battle's and pacing of the game it is so very rewarding .. playing through again as a thief ^^
