Killzone 3: “Literally Everything Is Streamed Now”

Normally, I don't like it when people complain about load times; they're typically not long enough to complain about unless you can't sit still for 20 seconds.

But Killzone 2 did feature some abnormally long load times, which is why one often hears gamers complaining about this drawback. But as you know by now, Guerrilla is really working to push the franchise forward; to produce yet another defining FPS. To do that, one must certainly progress on a technical and artistic level; the technical aspects were pretty amazing in KZ2 but again, those load times… So the developers are on top of things: according to managing director Herman Hulst , the new Killzone might not even have loading screens.

"We're excited what the PS3 can do for us and what we can do for it… (speaking of loading screens), literally everything is streamed now."

This means that Killzone 3 should follow in the footsteps of the current technological trend-setters; the likes of God of War III and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves didn't have any loading screens, either (once the game was loaded, of course). Hey, if you want to be considered among the elite, you had best perform like the elite!

This was literally my only complaint when playing Killzone 2. The loading during the campaign took me out of the zone more than a few times. I'd be halfway through the level, could see right where I was going next, and a loading screen would pop up for about 10 seconds. This game is shaping up to be the best FPS ever created (the only FPS better in my opinion is MAG, just because I love the chaos of 256 people fighting in Domination. It's the only aspect Killzone 3 can't compete with, unless GG is preparing 256 player mulitplayer 😛 )

i hope killzone 3 pulls an uncharted 2 and loads the next chapter while you are watching the cutscene in between two chapters

I wonder if this applies to the pre-level loading or the mid-level loads? Either way I can't wait for the game to come out.

Right, load times are only there so the gamer can readjust themselves and grab a drink or what not. gotta find the positive in the perceived negative.

I remember back in the day when I was a youth and games went to CD form, we were all like "Load times? What the hell is that crap? And they were pretty darn short." Now I don't mind them.

Same here.
It's always a "Now Loading……" or "Loading…." when I started gaming on PS1.

I got annoyed at it but now I don't mind them either.

I remember one Spyro game(don't know which one exactly) also a couple of Dragon Ball Z's having insanely long load times. I timed the Spyro one and it ended up being over 2 minutes o.O.
What always helped with long load times was if they gave me something to do during the load, like with one DBZ game the had this radar thingy and you could turn it with L or R3 and I was like, omg if I turn it like this and this and this, the game loads faster :D, of course it didn't, but it gave me something to pass the time -_-

Yes, it is unfortunate that there are some gamers out there that will find such small and pathetic things to cry about.

KZ2 was a masterpiece, i didnt even notice the load times, even after reading this article i still dont understand.

This is great. I don't mind load times but the ones in Killzone 2 are pretty horrendous.

They never ruin a game for me but if is possible to make a game without them then why not?

Sounds excellent to me. Uncharted kinda, sorta hides it's loading screens by starting each chapter with a big establishing shot and then panning into the actual action, it gives the game time to stream in the level assets while it presents the new scene to the user. It's slight of hand, but very effective and cinematic.

Well I didn't play kz2 for hours on end or anything, but I don't remember any load screen problem.

So what consists of a long load time? Apparently if you have to wait more than 20 seconds it's terrible, I spend way more time than that waiting for a red light to change and when it does, it's not nearly as exciting.

BikerSaint

I just finished KZ2 and I didn't notice any long load times at all.

The only annoying thing I did notice was that constant 3 to 5 second stutter-stepping hic-cup type freezeing during game-play on each new load.

Qubex
Qubex

In the greater scheme of things, nothing really to worry about though Biker 🙂 I too was a little annoyed to begin with, but now I see KZ2 as the master piece of technical engineering and gaming that it is…

I'm playing with it right now. Seems most of the long loading takes place in multiplayer. The campaign load times are fine.

I assume their new approach will also eliminate the hic-ups when saving or loading BikerSaint is talking about. Those are quite annoying.

I only get annoyed by load times if they come along with an install. Seriously, **its me to tears. Good to know that GG is striving to make them a non-issue with KZ3. On a related note, I'm glad that there seems to be fewer games that require a large install nowadays.

Peace.

Load times? I really don't mind them at all. Even Modnation's load times, which range from 20-40 seconds. Good to hear that Guerrila are minimizing them for KZ3 for those super-sonic acrobatic rocket-powered twitch gamers, but I won't get that little brreak in between to stretch or go get as drink.

I don't mind the load times before races in MNR but they're damn annoying when all you want to do is go between the Create and Share studios and the ModSpot. When you're doing that and just trying to get in, get out, it's damn annoying.

I think he does this to self-justify his extravagance and excessive spending. If he admitted the excellence consistently found in Sony exclusives, then he would be depressed over the thousands of dollars he's spent on his bloated library, the majority of which consists of multiplatform and 360 titles.

Perhaps, he might think I'm doing the opposite: Praising Sony exclusives to validate my thriftiness. However, if a game is multiplatformer, I don't feel the consistent need to knock it (DeadSpace, GTA, and NG are among my favorites). Yes, gaming isn't getting any cheaper. But if a game is amongst the best-of-the-best, then I will get it, even if it's a multiplatformer (4 titles in my quaint library of must-keep 12 games are multiplatform).

Additionally, his comments are quite formulaic 90% of the time, really. If a game gets unanimous praise from the staff and community here at psxextreme, most likely he will knock it. If the game is generally recognized as a dud, he will praise it to no end, with rare exceptions. It's all well & good to have an independent mind, as one should have, but speaking out merely just to disagree with anything popular is the same as simply riding the band-wagon, in that one's primary concern isn't with actually giving credit where it's due, but with simply agreeing or refuting with what others may think.

Oh, lay off him everyone. You'd be a bit disenchanted with the world too if you came from New South Wales :P.

I actually agree with him a little bit. As great a technical achievement that KZ2 was, and although GG used it to pioneer a cover system in an FPS game, I would certainly hesitate to call it revolutionary. Defining on the other hand, it is. It emphasises the best parts of the genre without catering too heavily towards the 'twitch-gamers'.

@ Anonymous Cowherd (yeah, I'm adopting it from Highlander, it's fitting.),
How about instead of simply stating such a comment off-hand, you give a BRIEF reason for why you think that. It would certainly help others to understand your flamebait comments.

@kevyd09,
That's a silly call. I think it's good to have a voice of anti-conformity here. Even if the raving does get on the nerves of many.

@Qubex,
Off-topic, but has that always been your avatar? Because otherwise my perspective of it just changed… I thought it was like a door or something, I only just realised it's a wizards head in profile… Weird.

@Shams,
Let's just say that he does it because he has the anonymity of the internet and no REAL nickname to hide behind. Nevertheless, you're right about the theme of his comments, and most of what else you wrote.

@aaronisbla,
LOL! In that case, maybe he should try his hand at Demon's Souls… After more than a week and about three and a half hours of time invested I can't even pass the first world… I suck…

Peace.

Jawknee

The problem isn't that hes "anti-conformity". Hes just a freakin troll. Hes so inconsistent with his nonsense its easy to see he does just to get people riled up. One week hes not getting KZ3 because "its just KZ2 with jetpacks" then the next week he denies he said it. Then Uncharted 2 is a "last gen game" compared to multiplats.

The guy is a fool and its obvious he only does this to try and get a rise out of people like Shams said.

I agree Lawless with your thoughts on KZ2.
I enjoyed the game a lot, and nearly finished it on Elite difficulty. But to call it revolutionary is something of an over-statement.
It's a great "quality" game that stands with the best of them. But the term "revolutionary" is very contingent on when a game releases. If games such as CoD4, KZ2, and Halo 3 (without any of their predecessors before them) all released simultaneously, as a group, they could qualify as "revolutionary." But seeing that KZ2 showed up last to the party it's hard to make such as claim. To those who've played many FPS's they will only be able to measure the incremental changes between their prior experiences.

Guerilla Games, makes me a bit less sad that I'm going to study Game design in the Netherlands -_- they're like, the only good Dutch studio I know, luckily they're Playstation, maybe I can stream in there in a couple of years, that would be sick. Don't worry I'd focus on the story telling aspect of the game and help them tone out the language of the characters, even though they're doing that now, Dutch people kind of have this hang to vulgarity…

The only load times I ever had a problem with was with the first Resident Evil on the PSX. Everytime you opened a door…grrr…

On a side note, the new PSP Marcus commercials are beyond obnoxious. There is nothing worse than a "kid with an attitude" sales pitch.

This is something that Blu-Ray storage really aids in. Believe it or not, many may not have noticed in GoW3 and Uncharted 2 that many story segment scenes are FMV captures of the game engine. These FMV segments play while the level data quietly streams behind the scenes. It's hard to detect because the compression artifacts are minimized due to the high quality compression method being implemented. This can be afforded due to the spacious capacity of a Blu-Ray disc. Traditionally, I've always dismayed in-engine FMV segments because of how crude they can appear. As an example, one just needs to play Gears 2 to be reminded how storage limitation can encroach on FMV quality.

It's funny but I actually don't recall KZ2 having long load times. But then again it's been 6 months since I played it, so maybe my memory fails me. I am looking forward to KZ3. It's certainly not going to be revolutionary, but that doesn't matter too much. I just want a great campaign that I can blast through in a single sitting 🙂
