Apache: Air Assault Taking Flight Soon

Flight games are few and far between these days but do you know what's even rarer? Flight games featuring helicopters.

Today, Activision Publishing has announced that Apache: Air Assault will launch this fall for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In development at Gaijin Entertainment, they're calling this a "modern combat flight simulation game" where players will take control of a variety of lethal Apache attack helicopters. Your mission is to thwart terrorist attacks by utilizing the "cutting-edge military weaponry" you will have at your disposal, and you'll be tested continually throughout 16 multi-stage missions. You'll perform both air and ground strike operations off the coast of Africa, visit the treacherous mountains of the Middle East, and brave the steamy jungles of Central America, and each environment is faithfully recreated via "high resolution map data from real-world satellite photography." Said David Oxford of Activision:

"No games on next-gen consoles have been dedicated to helicopter combat simulation, but that is about to change this fall. Apache: Air Assault offers fun for diehard military enthusiasts and flight sim fans as well as gamers who just want to blow stuff up."

So although they're going for authenticity and realism, players can tailor the game to their tastes. If simulation isn't really you thing, you can simply select Arcade Mode for more accessible controls; the Realistic Mode will definitely take some practice and precision. There's a local Co-op Campaign Mode along with online competitive multiplayer featuring Team Deathmatch, Ground Attack, Capture the LZ and Ground Strike. We'll be on the lookout for some early footage, too.
