PlayStation 3: The Only Choice For Hardcore Gamers

Call me whatever you want. Ardently make your case for one of the other platforms. Challenge the definition of "hardcore." I really don't care at this point; I've come to the conclusion that if you're a hardcore gamer, you have no choice but to own a PlayStation 3.

Why? Because I don't associate "hardcore" with time spent, skill or genre. You don't have to play a certain number of hours per week, you don't have to practice endlessly to become the best of the best, and you don't have to play only the deepest RPGs or the most competitive games online. No, in my eyes, the only requirement for the label "hardcore" is you have to love games. You don't stick to any one genre; you simply want to play the best games available, and although we all have our preferences, the quality of our entertainment is all that matters. Brand loyalty is pointless, hostility and massive superiority complexes don't mean anything, and at the end of the day, the hardcore gamer just wants to have fun. He wants the best. Therefore, is it even a question? If we want the best in most every genre, and we want the absolute elite, can we not have a PS3?

Platforming? Not much out there is better than the esteemed Ratchet and Clank franchise. You can be into shooters all you want but they're all sort of blending together these days, and the only games that really stand out seem to be Killzone 2 and – soon – Killzone 3 . In terms of open-world action/adventure games, I dare say both inFamous and (next year) inFamous 2 are better than the likes of Crackdown (and GTA and RDR are multiplats, of course). Action…nothing tops God of War III . Nothing. Action/adventure isn't really a question; Uncharted 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 have that category all sealed up (as good as Gears of War really is). Sports and racing is usually all about multiplats but I think we're all expecting Gran Turismo 5 to outstrip Forza 3 in just about every possible way. And lastly, I ardently believe the PSN has by far the best selection of exclusive downloadables, including Flower , echochrome , Wipeout HD , Joe Danger , Shatter and others.

Yes, if you're "hardcore," you should probably own all three systems. But if you could only have one , I can't imagine any scenario where the 360, Wii or PC is the ideal system for all genres. RPGs remain the only undecided, as most are multiplats and I personally prefer Lost Odyssey to the lacking JRPGs exclusive to the PS3. And of course, it can always be argued that Live is somehow still better than the PSN, but the differences at this point are mostly minimal, and PlayStation Plus makes Live look a good deal less attractive, in my opinion. Even beyond genres, do we get anything like Heavy Rain on any other platform? And in terms of continuing to push the envelope; continuing to excel; continuing to provide gamers with new and improved forms of interactive entertainment, we all know the PS3 has the most potential remaining in the box. That's the way things are.

And by the way, I left 3D and Move/Kinect out of this because I don't have all of that directly in front of me, and I preferred to focus on the games alone for this particular piece.

Ben, I know you have been preaching about the variety of games on the PlayStation platform before, and that has always been – for me – one of the key virtues of the PlayStation brand. There is no genre bias, all genre are welcome and all are well served on the PlayStatin. That's not something that can be said of other platforms. When you throw in everything else that the PS3 has over and above what the competition can offer, there is only one choice.

However I think that too many people will read your editorial here as a PS3 fanboy piece. When they do that, they are missing the point. You defined 'hardcore' gamer in a way that I think is by far the most accurate and truthful I have ever seen. Hardcore, or what I have previously called 'core', gamers are gamers that like games, all games and can play pretty much any game and have a good time (assuming the game is any good of course). So many times hardcore gamer is shorthand for first person shooter fan. But that's just not it, and I think that's why people will misunderstand the article.

As you say for the hardcore gamer, the gamer that wants all kinds of game and all things console, the PS3 is the only serious offering that covers everything, whether it's retro gaming, mobile gaming, online gaming digital downloads, disc based or whatever. Still, I fear too many people will flame this for being very fan driven.

Oh, don't worry. I think we all know that any editorial piece can be construed as "flamebait" these days.

That isn't my problem. It won't stop me from writing what I consider to be valid opinions for the community to comment on and discuss. Just because EVERYTHING is flamebait doesn't mean we're going to never talk about the PS3 and its games. 🙂

Even if it might come across to many as a fanboy piece, I agree with Highlander completely.

I thought a hardcore gamer included all people who play for a certain amount per week, or had the highest stats, kill ratio, or whatever. It is accurately the person who plays the most games, regardless of genre.

This thankfully excludes COD nuts and Xbots who only play MW2 or Halo 3. Sure, they might play it a lot, but they are no where near as hardcore as myself and many other fine gamers on this website. It's also clear that 360 has established itself as the shooter's console of choice, but once that genre fad has passed (which it's starting to now), many more will flock to the next best thing, most likely offered by PS3.

There are Wii gamers which come under 3 categories, kids, casual adults and core fans. The core fans are unfortunately the minority under the Wii, but Mario games, Metroid, Zelda, No More Heroes and the following rush of games like Skyward Sword, Kirby, Epic Mickey, Goldeneye, etc are pushing the Wii back into the spotlight, more so than 360.

PS3 has the most to satisfy the core gamer, and Ben, you nailed them all. Racers, Shooters, Platformers, Action Adventure, Puzzle, but you did forget Sony introduces new genres with the likes of Heavy Rain creating the Interactive Drama genre.

Unfortunately, there is only one feature lacking in the PS3 that continues to make my friends choose Live over PSN, and 360 versions of multiplats over the PS3 version, and that is cross game chat, or the ability to make party groups outside whatever game you're playing.

My friends continue buying 360 games and paying for Gold simply cos of that function. They can chat with each other with the press of a button, simple as that. And Mics came packaged with the 360 console. That is the one and only edge MS has over Sony.

But in terms of hardcore games experiences, yes, Sony is the clear winner.

And now to convince my PC gaming friend and 360 fanboy to buy a PS3. It will save me lugging mine over to his place every time to play Littlebig Planet, or Motorstorm, or Singstar, or Buzz, or Rock Band 2. See, this is why I own a PS3, cos gaming is never boring on the PS3. While my friends are on 360 pushing their kill score on shooters, me and my friends are partying like it's 2009. (I say 2009 cos that was the year PS3 rose and dominated)

I would just like to add…

I would love to see these so-called 'core gamers' on 360's try and tackle Demon's Souls.

Since many here play this game, it's pretty clear which gamers can call themselves 'hardcore' and say it with pride and dignity, not as an argument or to boast. (cough… teen Xbots… cough)

Yes indeed, that's definitely a drug well served.

I have that medication prescribed to me as a dose daily of good maintenance.

It's definitely the greatest combination cure-all wonder drug, and youth serum, of all times!

(LOL, just fun'ning on the typo).

DanceMachine: It's SO sad that cross-game chat is somehow a determining factor for a console purchase or preference.

If that's all I had to cling to with my machine, I'd freakin' kill myself.

But yes, the point is, the PS3 caters to everyone with top-notch quality in most every category of gaming. I have a 360 for a few exclusives but as was the case with my PS2 and Xbox, the PS2 just eventually ended up delivering more great games. What more is there to say?

@ Ben

Very true. No matter how good the online service is, if there are no good games to back it up, then there's no point.

I am not arguing against your idea that PS3 has it all, cos it really does. Shooters are the 360's forte, and it just happens to be what is most popular, especially for online or social gaming. COD and Halo are party games in themselves if you really think about it.

But, in terms of cross game chat, when you have a lot of friends, most of them on 360's (particularly here in Australia where supposed hardcore gamers play 360 more than PS3), cross game chat and 360's easy to use online functions make online multiplayer gaming much more fun.

I tried to chat with 3 friends over PSN and just couldn't do it unless we were in a chat room or playing the same game. Party chat and cross game chat is such an easy way to play with friends, even if you're all not playing the same game. I find it a much more enjoyable experience playing online on 360, mostly cos my friends all have 360's.

But PS3 will be the king of single player games and many multiplayer games. I'm not saying cross game chat is the be all and end all of things, but it is most certainly an important feature, one many of my friends would love in their PS3's.

Honestly, the Wii has more exclusives I want over 360.

In fact, my Wii wishlist is triple the size compared to my 360 wishlist.

We all know about Epic Mickey, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Goldeneye 007, Zelda Skyward Sword, Metroid other M, etc.

But apart from Halo Reach and Gears of War 3, what does MS have to offer? Crackdown 2 isn't as good as they hoped, and is definitely not a system seller. Kinect has no hardcore launch games, and the only one that interests me is Dance Central from Harmonix.

So, apart from those 3 games, what does MS have? COD exclusive DLC? Yay… Woo…
Medal Of Honor is more popular. MS put their eggs in the wrong basket this year.

Like I said, Wii has more than 360, and THAT'S saying something!!!

Jawknee

Yea the Wii has a great line up for the rest of this year and early next. They lagged getting some of their main franchises out the door but they are coming.

All those you listed are on my most wanted list as well. Donkey Kong as well.

Not much going for the Xbox. We're 5 years in and all they have is another Halo and Gears. Sucks for them.

A pledges humiliation is that they must play an hour of Kinectimals while the assembled brothers and sisters of the Order of Hardcore Gamers pelt them with marshmallows.

Glasses are a must, but I think we'd accept cosmetic glasses, you know the ones that don't have prescription lenses.

And it's considered the most important card in getting a "natural" Blackjack(the other one is the Jack of Spades).

Lost Odyssey is a pretty good JRPG. I'm playing through it right now. I still think Valkyria Chronicles is the best JRPG this generation.

Well as someone who could only afford one system, I own a ps3 because in doing my research I found that it was much more than a gaming console. It is my entertainment system.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer and I don't feel that I've missed much of anything by only owning a ps3. I feel more than content with what it offers.

I have heard many a xbot claim they only wanted a gaming console, well that is lame. If you buy a home do you only need shelter and settle for a tent at the same price as a house, of course not.

Ps3 offers the most diversity in game genre's, the most in multiple entertainment aspects, and continues to provide more and more entertainment options.

In the end, Ben you are correct and I couldn't agree more.
