Although the Helghast were introduced in Killzone 2 , they remained mostly faceless despite a solid storyline.
Developer Guerrilla Games seeks to change all that with the upcoming third installment. During a lengthy interview with GamePro (which may or may not contain spoilers, depending on your definition), studio boss Herman Hulst spoke about how the Helghast might be viewed as sympathetic enemies this time around. We'll learn more about their history, why they're fighting, and for what they're fighting. Said Hulst:
"In Killzone 3, we show that even the Helghast have some humanity left in them. We’re weaving a story that has more shades of gray than the trite representation of ‘good vs. evil. Although the Helghast are physically still human, they consider themselves superior to the human race in terms of society and culture.
They possess a mentality that’s similar to how the Nazis viewed those not part of the Aryan bloodline. Helghast look down on humans as weak, lying, and spineless."
Yeah, well, that's how I sometimes see humans, too. Maybe I should have the option of joining the Helghast at the start of the story. Anyway, Hulst also talks a lot about the first-person shooter, and how it continues to change. The key is to continue to adapt with an industry and category of gaming that often remains in flux. Added Hulst:
"Killzone will always be about scorching, intense action, no matter where we take it. But as the shooter genre evolves, Killzone too evolves," Hulst says. "Killzone 3, in particular, embraces elements that aren't necessarily native to first-person shooters, such as vehicle-based combat and this sequence on the glaciers that was influenced by platforming video games."
After GT5, KZ3 will very likely be the second game I play in 3D. …and I'm honestly not sure which of the two I'm more excited about.

Well…you've made a believer out of me. I guess a lot of games need some tweaking…especially in the AI department of things. It would be better if individual enemies were better equipped and intelligible to the point that running and gunning, then hiding and killing looping over and over again isn't the only tactic necessary to achieve victory, it just sounds so mindless and inspires carelessness. Good rant. I love when people speak the truth; the truth is what allows reform thus revolution.
I would have to say that the A.I. in KZ2 was pretty darn near that. Haha, I found it absolutely unbelievable when I was playing the Blood Meridian level and I was taking cover behind a support beam and there was an explosive barrel next to me. All of a sudden as a wave of Helgast reinforcements came and I heard one of em say "SHOOT THE BARREL", OMG, jumped out and ran somewhere else and would you believe it, it blew up.
It does seem like KZ3 is going to have a real story, i mean something with real substance. the whole greyness interms of good vs evil, that is always a good story. and its not exactly been overused in the games industry. not like evil PMCs.
Before KZ2 came out I found myself wanting to know more about the original. After watching the opening on youtube I quickly searched for copies of the game (despite the reviews) and was pleased to find new copies on Amazon for $5. I highly suggest that anyone who has questions about the Helghast to purchase and play the game. You will need some patience to work through some of the gameplay but the story is fantastic. I found that my perception of the KZ2 story line differed greatly from people who had not played the original – I was really hoping for the Helghast to get some serious payback for the ISA's crimes against their people and while the end did manage to set that up, they are still perceived (mostly because of their appearance) as the evil empire that they are not.
I think KZ3 has the opportunity to be epic and I hope that the game is taken in the direction that they so eloquently began with the first chapter.
No matter what happens – February cannot get here soon enough!
Hey, bit off topic, but it seems killzone 3 will be adapting run and gun controls for thos other FPS fans. Now i don't know if it's in addition or anything (i sure hope so, seems like it), otherwise this can be added to the influence of twitch gaming on developers.

oops sorry, gotta pay better attention
haha no worries.
I wonder if for KZ #4, they'll make that game ONLY from the Helghast point of view, and we'll get play the whole game from their side.
I know I for one, would definitely like to be able to play the game from a much different species point of view too.
GG should go ahead and add an alternate campaign to KZ3 for the Helghast. That way you can do both.
