Adults Only “Visual Novel/Love Sim” Coming To PS3

You probably haven't heard of Fortune Arterial but that's partly because it has only been on PC, and partly because if it was being sold anywhere near you, they might've kept it behind the counter.

Apparently, the game that isn't really a game is a popular 18-and-up Windows visual novel and now, it appears to be headed to the PlayStation 3. This according to Andriasang ; plans for the PC-to-console jump have been revealed in this month's issue of bishojo gaming magazine, Comptiq. They're even promising a big cover scoop for the next issue, so that ought to be interesting…if you're into this kind of thing. Fortune Arterial launched with what amounts to an "AO" (Adults Only) branding in January of 2008; there's something about a school and a vampire and an affair. Since that time, the game has been converted into manga and a light novel and soon, Japanese gamers will get a chance to see/play it on their PS3s. The question is whether or not it will ever come to the US – we're guessing not – and if it'll be a digital-only title. There's a video through the link above; don't worry, it's clean, but it also doesn't tell you much.

This sorta reminds us of Record of Agarest War in terms of style, but this one really doesn't have anything to do with role-playing or strategy, as we understand it. Personally, I get the idea of babes in games, but there's a distinct difference between DoAX and this…  One has, like…women. Grown women. The other, regardless of how desperately you wish to defend the anime culture, has girls in it that could very well be 10 or 11…and that's just…creepy.

I'll say this – regarding Anime. There is plenty of anime where the characters are clearly 18 or older. But, having taken one look at the attached image to this article, it's clear that whatever this is, it's about school girls. Not anime babes wearing school girl outfits. School age, school girls. Big difference, and most definitely a creepy difference.

This is one of the problems with Anime (and any cultural phenomenon). Anime covers a very broad range of styles and tastes. Just as there is plenty in the Anime world that is perfectly harmless fluff or age appropriate, there is plenty that is not. If you scratch beneath the surface of anime style and look at some of the video and print material that is produced, you quickly realize that the art style in Anime is used for many other forms of 'entertainment'. Unfortunately, people tend to lump the anime porn in with the more general anime entertainment.

Yeah, you're spot on. I know some people in university that called me and my buddy perverts for watching Bleach. I dunno… not much perverted about that title. Some people really do lump it all together.

Yeah, unless an anime character is distinctly in their 30's+, they almost always appear to at least some people as minors.

In a recent Official Playstation Magazine, one of the writers (who, in my opinion, comments far too often on things he doesn't understand. For example, mocking the title, Final Fantasy, cause it never seems to be the final one and wonders when the world will finally end, not understanding that each one is a completely different title… ugh) … one of the writers commented that Lightning looked about 14. I know FFXIII isn't really anime at ALL, but never-the-less, Japanese artistry doesn't always do age justice.

I, for one, like that art style, but I don't even bother defending it… I mean… you've got a point Ben… they do look way too young.

As for this title, the vid doesn't really tell me much. It sounds a little not-for-me-ish, but I'll withhold judgment for a later date.

The characters in the attached image are quite clearly school age school girls. This is one of those niche titles that crop up in Japan that never see the light of day elsewhere. I'm certain that if you know anything about Anime, then you'll know that titles like these are not intended for mainstream consumption. I'm not sure that it's even fair to include it under the heading of Anime, it's far closer to something else that uses Anime art styles, but is definitely not simply anime.

Aren't there rape simulators in Japan where you rape anime girls? I swear i saw something like that the google head lines when searching for games one day.

Sadly yes, and it was listed on Amazon Marketplace for a short while before they finally realized it was there and thankfully removed it. Perhaps worse is that that product wasn't anime based…

Ah yes, that's right. I remember now. People had a fit because Amazon was listing that garbage. I'm glad Amazon was fast in their reaction in removing it.

Oh, I'm well aware of the different styles of anime. Despite my love of JRPGs, not a one of those styles have ever really appealed to me and I really despise even the "classic" anime movies, like Akira and what have you.

But my own personal preferences aside, I certainly know anime extends beyond the kiddie porn section…but I still have to say, why that section exists at ALL is a creepy mystery to me. 🙂

TheHighlander

I liked Akira, but it is very much a love it or loathe it kind of thing.

This whole kiddie porn thing isn't merely creepy though. I mean I understand that a lot of characters in anime styled games and video look young. In most cases the characters are meant to be in their very late teens or early 20's, yet they can look younger than that. Look at my avatar for example. Shion is meant to be 22, but the way she is drawn she could be anything from 16 up. Of course we have to remember that Japanese women do have more petite bodies and figures, and extremely youthful faces (by western standards), so an art style that comes from that background will look – to our eyes – young.

That said, this particular entertainment product clearly involves characters younger than 16, so the art style is irrelevant.

Akira was fantastic and the original Pioneer release on VHS had fantastic english dialog and voice acting. When it was released on DVD they redid all the english dialog for some reason and it was terrible. It's rare to find anime with good english dialog, don't know why, who ever released it for DVD, had to go and screw that up.

Ha! No thanks. Ill stick to my Dragon Ball collection and the classics like Vampire Hunter D and Akira. No need to watch anime porn when i have a hot asian wife. 😉

In all seriousness, i will never get the Japanese when it comes to sexuality. They find stuff like this perfectly ok but they censor pubic hair? O.o

Strange stuff they're into. Anyone see the "creative" ways some in Japan are using Kinect? I'm sure that's exactly what MS had in mind when creating that worthless wannabe Eyetoy.

The whole censorhip thing has to do with the quaker like laws that the allies instaled in Japan after WWII. So people found loop-holes and that is why it is censorship is like that.

Although the PC version of Fortune Arterial is for Adults, the PS3 version won't be. What they do is edit out the pornographic material and make it strictly a visual novel. This is because Sony DOES have a policy about refusing +18 rated content on their platforms, especially if it's porn-related. This isn't the first time an eroge (the name of these types of visual games) gets ported to the PS3 either. Titles like Clannad, White Album, and Tears to Tiara are a few others that recieved un-adulted PS3 ports. The chances of any of them arriving overseas are practically non-existant [unless you choose to import]. Record of Agarest War is pretty much the closest [and probably the only] thing close to a visual novel we'll ever get

Not quite, we did get Sakura Wars (years later, once everyone stopped playing their PS2s…).

I don't really understand why this article is here. Some points:

1. There are lots of console adaptions of visual novels in Japan. This is nothing new.

2. The console adaptions of eroge typically censor or remove all the adult parts (which are usually only a small portion of the games…these aren't exactly porn).

3. This game, just like all the other visual novels in Japan, will never be released here, censored or not.

Why would they blame the months old leap year bug too? Odd..

TheHighlander

I think it was an odd coincidence. There was an extensive downtime for PSN maintenance, and PlayStation dot com was offline at the same time. I think that the person behind the article was either reporting the leap year thing mistakenly believing it to be happening now – thanks to the PSN downtime, or they were simply trolling.

? Yeah, I don't get the Japanese either. The weirdest porn fetishes in the world, Hentai and whatever else they've got over there, and they feel the need to censor pubic hair. Very odd people.

As for this title, well it's not so different from many other visual novels available on the system in the Japanese region. I don't really see it coming anywhere else uncensored, but even if it did, I wouldn't bother with it.

P.S. I liked Akira, never did see the end of it though. The disc I rented stopped working in the last twenty minutes. Apparently they're making a liv version… Ugh.
Peace.

Why on earth would anyone try to make a live action version of Akira? The final 20 minutes of the movie alone would be insanely hard to translate to live action.

Lawless SXE
Lawless SXE

I dunno. Apparently it's based more off the original manga and split into two movies. It's Hollywood Highlander, need I say more. Then again, it might have been cancelled. Let me check.

Wikipedia quote:
Talks began again as Warner Brothers signed on to produce the movie with Stephen Norrington (writer) and Jon Peters (producer).[17] Akira was to be developed into two live action films; the first was to be scheduled for a summer 2009 release.[18] Warner Brothers and Appian Way planned to adapt the two movies from the manga, with each one covering three volumes. Ruairi Robinson signed on as director, Gary Whitta wrote the script and Andrew Lazar, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Davisson were to produce the film.

Andrew Lazar has stated that the film is not dead and is in fact a priority project for Warner Bros. Pictures and when it does go into production, it will be very high budgeted.[19] Screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are currently working on the script. Gary Whitta has revealed that he has no idea whether they are re-working his script or starting from scratch.[20] The film is still on course to be released in 2011.[21]

NY Magazine has recently stated that Warner Brothers is in negotiations with the Hughes Brothers to direct the film.[22]

On June 17, 2010, Lazar said that a new writer had been hired and that the movie was being fast tracked. He also stated that the first movie would be based on volumes 1–3 and a second movie would be 4–6. The film will also be PG-13.[23]

Hollywood.
Peace.

@highlander
because hollywood is already out of material and they decided to ruin other things that people liked. kinda makes me think that writer's stike was crap. all it did was delay or end the shows i watched early, all 3 of them. movies are still mostly crappy or even worse.

I only watch anime that make me crack up so this kind arent even on my radar. but sadly most of the shows coming out are using the high school setting but as long as it doesnt go too far its alright. I tried watching this anime school days once because it said it was a comedy on its description but it was entirely disturbing i deleted it right away. what happened to anime quality like in love hina? that was hilarious.

Oh man, apparently the Child Pornography Prevention division of the FBI is the 2nd highest funded program in the FBI. I guess it's the only program they have that every country in the world cooperates with 100%.

My uncle's friend (uncle works in computer security and heard this story from an internet crime division friend of his in the states with the FBI) said they got into the office at 9am, had some old guy asking him if he was a virgin by 9:08, agreed to meet at a location by 9:45, and he was arrested in Russia by Russian police by 9:48. If it was any other criminal, it probably would have taken a few months.

The funniest part of that story, is that my uncles friend even admitted to the pedophile that he was police. The guy was like, "Are you a cop?" and the FBI guy said "yes", but the pedophile didn't believe him and kept going. LOL!

Here's your problem. Despite the obvious nature of the material, no real person is involved, it's all drawings and 'art'. I understand the way you feel and agree with that sentiment, but have we reached the point where lawmakers can legislate thoughts?

It's an uncomfortable topic because our first instinct is to call it what it is and wait for the police. But the trouble is the question of what crime has actually been committed? Unless the country has a law that makes it possible for certain drawings to be deemed pornographic (BTW the UK now has such a law), there is little that the police can do.

The wider issue is one of intellectual freedom. In other words, we humans can imagine just about anything. Do we want to get into the business of legislating thought? If you do, how do you prosecute someone for thinking immoral things? I mean I think there are obvious lines which right thinking people do not, and should not cross. However those are moral choices we make. If someone creates this kind of material and someone else enjoys it, who is the victim? Against who has a crime been committed? Because it's all drawn and created from the imagination of the creator there is no victim. The person who enjoys the material is similarly committing no real crime since, once again, there is no victim. Sure it can be called perverted, deviant and morally repugnant. But does that make it a crime?

Underdog15
Underdog15

I think you raise the accountability to freedom of speech issue again. Certainly a professional realm would be able to criticize and even discipline based on things said in the workplace or in politics. All humans think immoral thoughts at some point and of different natures. The accountability clicks in when one decides what to do with those thoughts.

Most healthy individuals do nothing to act on those thoughts and may even take steps to limit the chance of thinking them ever again.

Although there is no primary victim, it is entirely possible that a 3rd party uninvolved in the process could suffer. I know for a fact, that an event like that appearing on tv or even just having the knowledge of this type of things existence, can do a number on someone who has suffered a real life instance and has not properly healed from the trauma.

Obviously, it's a bit much to force everyone to tiptoe around in case there's someone Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome hanging around. But I would probably be very cautious about trusting someone who artistically portrays such evils as rape as entertainment and even more so be un-trusting of the consumer.

But you're right. There's no way to penalize that, and I'm not sure we should. A tricky topic with many varying opinions, to be sure!

That's it exactly. Please don't anyone think I condone those making this type of stuff – or worse. I am not in any way condoning it. But, it is an incredibly tricky issue, precisely because it can be so emotionally charged, especially for those who have been victims of very real abuse in the past.

The problem is not that this has "bad drawings" or that it's a "bad game." The problem is that this kind of material advertises a certain mentality. Expose yourself to the wrong advertising long enough and you may very well find yourself liking the product.
