Although they may make the jump to the US at some point, bear in mind that these three new PlayStation 3 models have only been confirmed for Japan.
Just before E3 kicked off, multiple sources located FCC filings for three new PS3 models and now, the unveiling is here: the CECH-2500A will boast a 160GB hard drive and be available in the standard charcoal black, the CECH-2500A LW is essentially the same machine only it's painted in a classic white finish, and then there's the CECH-2500B, which features the huge 320GB hard drive and is in black. All of these models will boast built-in WiFi 802.11 b/g as well as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and if you hadn't already guessed, that 160GB machine will replace the current 120GB model and the 320GB machine replaces the 250GB that's currently on store shelves. As we said, we don't know when or even if these models will become available in US and/or European shores, but we can always assume. Very likely, this move could help Sony, as Microsoft just recently updated their standard Xbox 360 to include a 250GB hard drive for the same $299 price.
So anyway, we'll let you know about the status of these three models in the coming year; very likely, they might hit the US for the 2010 holiday season.
Sadly all the new 360 unit does is warn you that it is about to die beforehand instead of actually being a better product.
dont forget, it somewhat prevented the discs from scratching when the 360 was moved, they downgraded that "protection" to a sticker telling you not to move it or it WILL scratch the disc. minimal protection is still protection.
Only 5? Pssh, hes barely into the aggravation that is the Xbox 360. I had 11 of those POS's in the first 8 months after launch. None of them laster more then 25 days and I hardly played them. Heck I was even in one of the Dean Takahashi 360 articles.
Those white controllers would get dirty as a crabshack.
yes, the white controllers get dirty. it gets a little dirty when i use it but when my bro uses it….i dont know what he does. mainly on that crack in the middle of the controller that separates top and bottom half, the dpad grooves, and that rectangular region where the sticker is on the back. a toothpick easily cleans it off.

Yah, I need to get a bigger hard drive… I can't even install all of my games on my 60GB. But no, I won't buy one of these, even if they do come to Australia. No B/C, no buy.
That is all.
Peace.
I, too, have a 60gig, and recently was running low on space. I just went in to the game data utility, and removed all the files of games that I'm not playing anymore, and I got me back 26 gigs, which is close to half of the original 55 gigs. So I should be good for another couple of years.
you shouldve went to best buy last week, they had western digital internal drives on sale. i got a 500gb for 55 bucks.
Yeah, I delete my old game installs whenever I need to put a new one on, but I'd prefer to not have to reinstall it every time I go back to an older game.
@johnld,
Last time I checked, we don't have Best Buy here in Australia. I wouldn't mind paying whatever price I have to pay, it's just that I couldn't be bothered to go to the computer store here in town, 'cos the owners annoy me, and I always have other things to do when I go to the cities.
Peace.
Well, I don't delete every game install: i.e., I deleted Red Dead Redemption, Batman:AA, DMC4, AC2, an Heavy Rain because I don't play them anymore, but I didn't delete R2, KZ2, U2, LBP, GTA4, TBOGT, NGS1 & 2, R&C:FTOD and ACIT, inFamous, or GOW3 just because I expect I might play them again some time (though I've played through each of them and platinumed 3 of 'em, and even traded a couple of them).
Insomniac games usually install under a half a gig. Other game installs are between .5 and 2 gigs. And very few games install at 4+ gigs. So for me, 60 gigs (or 55 as it were) with the occasional housekeeping is plenty for the near future. Maybe, in the future, if I wanted to be ps+ member, I'd opt for more, but for now, I'm all set.
I could see why you'd want more, especially if it wouldn't cost you much more as Johnld has noted. But, I rather save myself the hassle, until it is absolutely necessary.
@Lawless,
Purchase a HDD upgrade. If you don't have much downloaded to your PS3, then the pain is limited to re-installing the game data from the games you had previously installed.
I did that and it really wasn't that painful. Plus if you can get yourself an external USB drive with the capacity, you can backup everything else. My advice would be to do the following. Get a new HDD and an 8GB USB drive.
1. Delete the game installation data (NOT your game SAVE files), the data installed by the games such as the 4GB install that Soul Calibur drops on your HDD.
2. You should be able to backup your remaining data files onto something like an 8GB USB drive unless you have a lot of downloaded music files, video or tons of digital photos.
3. Once your backup is complete, DEACTIVATE the PS3, just in case. Go into your Account Management and deactivate the PS3 for video and games.
4. Remove the old HDD, install the new one, just as Sony's instructions say to do.
5. Restore the system and restore your backup (again just like the instructions from Sony).
6. Reactivate your system for video and games.
The reason I suggest deactivating the PS3 is that if something goes wrong when you are upgrading, you are not at risk of using up an activation.
When buying an HDD, make sure that the drive you buy supports a sector size of 512 bytes. Some of the new, very high capacity, 2.5-inch drives have a new low level format that uses 4096 byte sectors. I'm not 100% sure that the PS3 supports those yet.
I happen to like the black ps3's simply because they match my flatscreen, my dish receiver, my ps2, original xbox, and all my controllers.
Plus black is one of my top 2 favorite colors, I like the shiny black better than the mat black, but either one is fine with me.
Maybe when I buy my second ps3, I'll be able to get one of these, I'm thinking these should be used with the move bundle, which is what I'm looking to pick up in a few months.
no wireless N support?
thats kinda pathetic considering M$ have it in the new s.
i wish they would offer us a slim in the original piano black finish, the original ps3 was so sexy and the new 360 s looks really sleek!
i thought id never say this, but the new 360 looks better than the new ps3!
According to ign, the new 360 looks sleek in pictures, but in person, it looks "like a toy", and even cheaper than the original sku's. The plastic casing is flimsy, the power and eject buttons are overly sensitive, and the system produces even more heat than before, which is not good news. It has one fan instead of two now, it's shorter, more narrow, but more deep, the disc drive is a bit slower, and though it is quieter, previous reports of "whisper" quietness are exaggerations (or only possible as observations in showrooms such as E3 where there's tremendous background noise). Besides that, your old hard drives won't work with it, nor does it support memory cards at all now, and transferring data from them will be tricky to impossible, though it now has 5 usb inputs.
Apart from the range extension there is zero advantage to Wireless N for anyone who doesn't have a military grade or commercial Internet hookup. 802.11g has an indoor range of anything up to about 35 meters and more than 100 meters outside. Typically, unless you live in a large house with thick walls and place your router at the other end of the house from your wireless device, you won't see a huge advantage. But, I just knew you would be one of the someone's who jumped at the chance to criticize Sony. Oddly enough these units must have been in certification since before the squat 360 was announced, so they are not a response to the inclusion of Wireless n. I would imagine that the next raft of SKUs will include wireless n. But at the end of the day does the marginal (at best) improvement of having Wireless n offset the quite large disadvantage of having DVD rather than BluRay? No, not really. So let's be real shall we?

when it came into production is irrelevant!
my freaking SIX YEAR LAPTOP has wireless N how can a brand new device not have it?
the crappy dell lattitudes my work bought for 500 bucks have wireless N and 5GHz support, they have twice the features the ps3 has.
bluray burner to boot also.
the quality of the wireless card in the ps3 absolutely sucks donkey balls.
my router is not even 10M away from my ps3, and im lucky if i get 40% signal strength.
not to mention my ps3 constantly looses the connection, while the other 4 laptops, 2 iphones and 3 blackberrys in the house have no problems.
Well, aren't we the charmer. It does matter when they went into production, the features included in a commodity laptop are of no relevance to the features inside a game console.
As for your wireless performance, it's not Sony's fault that you a) have a crap router, b) have it situated in a bad location with sources of shielding or interference, or c) have your router configured to use a crowded channel instead of using one that none of your neighbors use. Either way, your situation with Wireless G is untypical, and a repeater, along with a new router, sounds like a far more viable solution for you.
As for your other devices not losing the connection, I have no idea what you do with those devices, I know that the PS3 will notify you if it loses the connection and you'll get dropped from games which makes an intermittent connection very visible on a game console. Unless you are doing heavy online gaming on your PC, an intermittent or poor wireless signal is less obvious as your PC will simply reconnect if the signal is lost. The impact is far less visible than on a game console.
LOL.
Just because your from western sydney doesnt mean you have to act like a douche.
Wireless N is overkill.
And yeah, so what if your laptop has stuff, Sony were making a gaming console, not a super computer. Even though they are still being used for the same purpose sometimes? HA!
Consoles will never see the same specs as PCs. But you will still always get better looking games on consoles.
@Nameless complainer
It's funny that you criticize the new PS3 for not having wireless N when the xbox only got itsbuilt-in wifi OVER FIVE YEARS LATER
ok its the routers fault, so than why is it out of 9 other electronic devices in the house connected to the network the ps3 is the only one that has the problem?
its not a router anyway, its a router/ modem which bigpond have provided us, so i have no choice but to use it, i cant go out and buy a new router it wont work with it.
i have gone through 6 routers, i have had this problem ever since i bought my original ps3 on launch.
now the only constant is my ps3, so it does not take a rocket scientist to come to the conclusion the ps3 is the problem.
if you have 4 elements in a problem, you check 3 of them to be ok than it has to be the 4th one thats causing the problem. no?
Even via process of elimination, accusing the 4th option of being the problem is still ignorant without proof.
My original launch 60gb, picks up my neighbours wireless signals all the time, on occasions i have even been able to use some of them, and they aren't next door either.
And im pretty sure modems will work with anything, ive been using the same ADSL modem for at least 7 years. Still works perfectly.
Are you on the drugs? (lol) the new 360 does not look better then the PS3. I seen one in person and I can tell you it is by far the cheapest looking console I have seen in a long time. The exterior case is very flimsy especially around the back where the openings for the ports are (cheap enough that if you lifted the console with one hand on the front and the other where the ports are I would worry the casing would crack or warp.
I will NEVER understand why they don't have the white ones available in the US. They're already making them, it's not like there would be any added cost, and I'm sure a ton of people would love to buy a gleaming white PS3 – me included. But no, we can't have that.
Well, if you remember the PS1 and PS2, it too a whilefor alternate colors to arrive on these shores. So I would imagine that you might see some arriving in time for the Holiday season. Who knows, they might even include the pointless, but much vaunted Wireless n support.
As with the other Playstations, it will come to the US at the end of it's life circle 🙁
It comes down to manufacturing time and having enough room in the "shipping/manufacturing channel" to get it done properly. They need to be set to different regions and thus loaded with different firmware for the blu-rays and the language settings. Not to mention the additional printing that has to be done to "localize" the package art. These seem like stupid reasons but its some of the reasons we dont see all the colors from JP in the west.
As for the PSP the JP systems while still region free for games are actually loaded with different motherboards, so that the XMB registers O as ok/confirm and X is cancel (this may also be the case for the PS3 but I'm not sure). So Sony has to organize the factory to have the colored PSP cases loaded with US/EU motherboards. It's not something that would seem like a big deal for a company of Sony's size but these are some of the reasons they have mentioned in the past.
Will that bluetooth functionality let me listen to music? All of the headsets I see are wired. Why can't the PS3 send music through it's bluetooth channels?
Wow, still no 802.1.1 N? That sucks…
I own a 50+ y/o house that was previously owned by a sweet old lady. I doubt that she ever had her house shielded in any manner, but I upgraded my router from the g that my isp provided for me to a dual band n router that boasts 1200ft of crystal clear reception. If I place my router on the other side of my house, I only get a 5% improvement in signal strength since switching, 15% to 20%. My next PS3 needs to have n so I can own multiple PS3s and not have them wired to my router.
