There have been rumors concerning a new PlayStation and although it's all speculation, one thing is certain: Sony has started work on "future platform-related activities."
In a recent Develop interview with Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, we learn that Sony is looking to the future with the help of its first-party developers. This change in focus concerning how new hardware was created came about after the departure of Ken Kutaragi, and the arrival of Kaz Hirai as president of SCE. The latter wanted developers in on any new hardware-related meetings, which is probably a good idea. As for new platforms, Shuhei said:
"Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities."
Later in the interview, Yoshida goes on to say how SCE "underwent a rescue mission for its first-party studios, bringing together top engineers from around the world to build a universal game engine." As of now, it's Yoshida's major role to "connect hardware guys to developers." Well, we're certainly on board with that philosophy and you shouldn't worry about the PS4 popping up early; you had to assume Sony would be at least talking about the next platform by now, right?
the ps3 still has a good 2 to 3 years
no offense, but efff the ps4, come out with a killer psp upgrade. not only upgrade, but skip a generation (by that i mean, twice as good as the next upgrade)in terms of quality. i said this before, but i want it as close as the ps3 as possible. the psp is close to ten years of it's release. it plays ps1 games, some are just as good as the psp2. ok imagine if it's 30 to 50 percent bigger, has a dual screen and both screens has 3d, is close to 98 percent quality of the ps3, uses the save cards that digital cameras use (those are 5 to ten times the space as blue ray discs i think), has two cameras, an actual internet (not web browser), can play or upload high def shows and movies, and can play any ps3 game. all for 400 or 500 dollors. the highlander, what say you?
That is absolutely ridiculous dude. No way in hell people would pick that up at $500 it would suck to be that big to play Blu-Rays, unfeasible for a handheld device.
Ummm a single layer blu ray can hold 25 gigs, a typical camera these days uses sdhc memory cards and a 32GB card which is the smallest one that is more than 20GB costs about $100 on average, so that would not be very cost effective.
What's "an actual internet (not web browser)" ??
I want a PSP2 no doubt. I use my PSP constantly. It's the closest thing to an all in one device for me, its a Web Browser, a phone of sorts (Skype), a gaming console, an MP3 JPEG and MP4/WMV player for me. It really is a great device. Though mine would include a hell of a lot more lol. such as a camera of at least 5 MP. NO TOUCHSCREEN!!! one joystick with clicking functionality. Future Flash Support. HDMI output, a gorgeous OLED screen. Bluetooth, an app store of sorts. better speakers. N Wi-Fi and I will be good. Maybe 3G (optional of course).

Yup, and I noticed that AaronisBla has taken up the new cole image to spite me, lol 🙂
I know it's fun and awesome looking toward the future with high hopes but what do we have to look forward to really? I mean I'm no pessimist far from it but what will the PS4 bring? I'm still looking at select PS3 games in awe wondering and pondering the amount of work that went into polishing the likes of Uncharted 2, God of War 3, and Heavy Rain.
Right now in terms of visual presentation what can the PS4 bring that the PS3 can't achieve visually? I mean I know there's more to a system than visual display but let's be real, most people want to see the upgrade, the difference from one console to the next in visual gaming. I mean why purchase the next-gen console when last-gen's console outputs similar or a simply replicated display? Maybe someone knows something I don't or I'm just out of the loop but will the PS4 be able to take visuals to another level? Has the PS3 not maxed out our game developer's visual dreams?
Well I understand your point completely, but you can always make that human face look more like the real thing, that grass look just as unique as the one in real life. It all takes processing power man and thats probably will be what takes PS4 to that next level, plus the addition of the new Blu-Ray standard drives that need to be upgraded. But all in all you can always improve.
why does everyone say "the likes of (whatever game)"?
odd choice of words
I think it's because Ben says "the likes of" quite a bit, but it isn't a strange choice of words when indicating something of a certain quality you wish to point to.
R&D on a new console would ideally begin as soon as the last console is completed. At least thats how I would run my company. So I am not surprised if at least the concept for a PS4 is on the table.
M$ stated at one point that it wanted to create a handheld that would play 360 games. If SONY could accomplish this with a PSP they would dominate the handheld market.
I have come to the conclusion that Microsoft has a BORG mentality. Developers who are weak assimilate and behave like drones. SONY of course is likened to the Federation. Journeying to where no console manufacturer has gone before.
Kirk out!

I believe that the next generation of consoles will allow developers the power to run their games natively at 1080p with 60 FPS and 7.1 digital sound.
Right now, most games play at a native resolution of 720p. Many games at lower resolutions than that…
More RAM and SPU's would do the trick. The key for Sony in the next generation is to get their NETWORK expanded.
Sony should go the route of the PS3 (swing for the fences) with the PSP2. They will be going up against the iPad and 3DS. Good luck…they better be able to give you PS2 games on the go at the very minimum to compete…
whatever sony has up their sleeves and are thinking I'll alway be there to support.
I would love a new PSP but I am so afraid to get one right now do i go with a PSP 3000 or do I get a PSPgo or do i wait????
Oh anyone see the new pictures of the White PS3 it looks sexy!
Wait until fall.
PS3 is an amazing machine, but sony really did mess up launching it, being both late an priced ridiculously high. I bought mine on day one, but deeply regretted it.
The only way the PS4 will be a day one buy is if it is moderately priced, hopefully sony have learnt their lesson.

@myworstnightmar, bi-gamer means that i own, play, and enjoy both my ps3 and 360 systems. as for the wii i don't have one but i played it at my friends house and i could not get into the hole control set up. i take a controler over a stupied nuchuck any day. PS3 & 360 > WII
i seriously doubt its anything to do with a ps4, more likely a new PSP.
not a revision like the 2000, 3000, and go but a whole redesign of the system.
though one has to ask if sony were to bring a new PSP out and it is releasing within a years time, why would they release GOW ghost of sparta on the old PSP?
GOW is one of sonys flagship titles, so you would think they would hold it off for the new PSP save it for a release title.
anyway, IF they are doing a new PSP 2 it has to be crazy powerful!
dont bother with the 3D crap though, without glasses it has such a limited range and effect, and no ones going to sit on the train with a pair of glasses on!
just make sure you support it properly, none of this ps3 to psp ports BS!
i want games made for the PSP, original on PSP, designed for PSP.
none of this we have MNR so lets bring it to PSP.
we have LBP so lets bring it to PSP.
we have Assassins creed so lets bring it to PSP.
we have MGS so lets bring it to PSP.
why would i go spend 300+ bucks on a new system, not to mention cost of accessories, games and such.
why would i go to all that cost just so i can play new versions of ps3 games?
i want new titles, new experiences i can not get on my ps3 like echochrome or i cant think of anything else!
there is no point releasing a new system, if your not going to support it properly!
o, and obviously it has to be priced well, unlike the ps3, go and move so its certainly not off to a good start!
where in a recession here, remember that, sony are not the only ones hemorrhaging money!
well, sorry i was taking so long, but the biggest flash memory out there is a 128 gig. it's expensive, but i'm just saying. but if it's as powerful or more powerful than the the ps3, who wouldn't pay 500 dollors for it? if it can play any ps3 game? as for the the actual internet, i mean an actual internet like the computer. something that doesn't freeze up, something that allows you to download anything. whether it be movies, tv shows, etc., online, updates itself with the latest flash drive, and can watch any trailers without or for a very little fee. now it doesn't have to play wow (world of warcraft), but if it can somehow use your ps3 controller as well. again, what say you. but again, if sony says that it's close to the ps3 as possible, but actually has a slight over edge over the ps2, then fine whatever. oh, remember when the psp plus was just a rumor? did you hear about a so called "ghost space"? i'm not sure, but i think that's where maybe your games or saves are stored on hardrives outside of your system. if they had it set up where through any of the 4 to 6 major cell phone companies you pay an annual fee to play your games anywhere and anytime without having to deal with an actual disc, flash card and save to your game (it may have a built in hardrive, but you don't need it) would you pay for it? whether you cancel your annual fee, as long as you renew it, your games you paid for will always be there. again, what say you?
128GB flash disks are not at all expensive.
i bought a kingston USB flash drive off ebay 3 weeks ago, cost me 100 bucks.
not bad if you ask me, considering a HDD would of cost me the same price.
as for PSP being as powerful as the ps3, impossible.
well not impossible, but impractical.
the amount of heat it would use, and the amount of power it would require would reduce its battery life to a nanosecond!
id love to see a new PSP, the more power its got the better, but between a ps2 and ps3 is as close as were going to get.
well, i would think it may cost too much money right now, but i would rather wait 2 to 6 years for something that bests the ps3 as a handheld. that's why in my opinion nintendo stole the show. i get it, the wii is the weakest of the 2 consoles out there, but to come out with a handheld that looks just as good if not better than your current console with trailers and demos that hasn't even been released yet? that's incredible, in addition to showing nothing but exclusive only titles on your console.
