Remember when SCEA boss Jack Tretton said the majority of PlayStation 3 owners were "voracious technophiles?"
Well, perhaps he was right. According to results from a Greenlight Entertainment Retail report as cited by WebUser , Sony's PlayStation is the "most followed brand on Facebook and Twitter in April, with 1.4 million fans and followers in total." Over 12 million UK consumers searched online for entertainment products that month and 72% of that number looked about for consoles and games; "Nintendo DS Games" was the most commonly searched-for term with around 1.5 million hits (12% of all searches), and Amazon.co.uk was the "most visible" entertainment site. But what's interesting to readers 'round here is that the PlayStation brand is the most popular on major social sites like Twitter and Facebook. We've certainly found a lot of info on Twitter recently – what's with this new trend of announcing stuff there, anyway? – and we at PSXE have even had our reviews for certain games noted on Facebook pages for certain publishers and game makers. Yes indeed, it's a brave new world.
And PlayStation is right at the center of it, apparently. Let's not forget about that new Facebook integration for the PS3, which goes along with existing Twitter integration for certain games. I mean, I don't care, but obviously, other people do.
P.S. The pic is a bit of nostalgia back when people seemed to care more about b/c in the PS3.
They realize what we know about ps3. It's greatness!
LOL, well Ben, I still care about it. The PS2 BC in the PS3 that is.
I hear ya World. The next time Sony is poised to make a price drop I'd rather they bring back the emotion engine. Give us back our B/C. My ol 60Gb had it, and I used it till the day she died. Now my crippled Slim must share the stand with a sidekick… PS3 should not need a sidekick. It only does everything, except for those things it used to do…
Wow, that was pretty negative. Guess I'm still bitter about the whole YLOD experience. Let it be known, I still love my PS3, always will 🙂
Hey, I'M World!
@World
Haha Yeah I reckon you are.
Ah jeez, one of those days. Well, they say to err is human… there goes that fantasy.
I'm not sure if this is all due to word of mouth or the Kevin Butler ads, but either way I see it as a sign that the casual gamer, or the 'masses' as I call them, is becoming a bit more informed on current consoles; thus no surprise that they'd be interested in the best console out there right now.
That is not surprising the PS brand has been out for more than 15 years. and dominated 2 previous generations. and without the ps3 this gen I would have stopped gaming forever.
Well, I'm not about any of the social sites like FaceBookTwits, as a loner they're just not my style.
But with that said, it's still great PR for Sony, and good for the fans who are into that.
Why be a loner? There are people out there. Look over there. And over there. And over there…
All he needs is his bike and the open road.
…and a million dollars for a tank of gas.
Me, neither, Saint. My sisters and friends have like 500-1000 friends each, on their facebook accounts, compared to my 32.
I don't know how they can possibly know 1000 people, let alone make 1000 "friends". I have one family friend who has like 1500 facebook friends, but he's obviously a spot-light freak, and has been that way since he was a kid. "Hey man, how are?" "I'm great, I'm totally in love with my self, and so are 1500 other people! I'd ask how are you, but I'm so in love with my self, that frankly, I couldn't care enough to!"
As he's grown up, he's gotten super-annoying, but I keep a soft-spot for him, just because he's my childhood friend's younger brother.
As a matter of fact, and not to go off on a tangent, but these days, ostentatiousness and narcissism is an epidemic. It's considered chique or classy to be totally self-absorbed. I've noticed, especially in the young adults (i'm talking 20-30 y.o. range), that a lot of people are just "too cool" to say "sorry", or "thank you". It's really a disgusting cultural phenomenon.
Sure, opposite gender interactions will show more variation, but for obvious reasons.
I don't use facebook, but set it up because of requests from my friends and family overseas. So every now and then, I see a facebook friend invitation in my hotmail account, and i accept it. If they send you a facebook message, for like good news, weddings, baby showers, funerals or whatever, it makes staying in touch that much easier.
LOL Shams, I have about that many (30-odd) facebook friends as well. I think the folks with 1000+ friends are basically spamming friend requests to each other for various Facebook 'games'. Mafia Wars or Farmville….did you ever see the South Park episode that skewered Facebook and Farmville? Oh, that was so well done, if you haven't you might want to take a look.
I think that the internet, texting and decades of focusing on building kids self esteem instead of good character are responsible for the trend among young adults that you mention. But hen, I'm getting old and wise (or is that old and tired?), so I suspect that is simply the way of things.
Youth, wasted on the young I tells ya! Hey, gerroff my lawn, darned kids. No respect, NO RESPECT! In *my* day….
Very well said, Highlander. I just might check that SP episode out.
These thoughts often make me feel over the hill, so to speak, though I'm only 31, and I've been having them since I like… as long as I can remember.
LOL! Remember Rodney Dangerfield?
BC is still there. It just lies dormant in the PS3 just waiting for the reawakening. Fact is, SONY can still capitalize on PS2 games. HD remixes and all that. Its a goldmine. I feel its whats slowing down the migration from the PS2 to the PS3.
As Far as the socialization of the nation, I am very careful in my participation. I now have a Facebook and a Twitter account. Facebook is set to private and no notifications. It gets annoying, but I use it to keep track of family and my kids especially. I just have them limit the information they put on there. Its madness. People putting all their business out there for all to see. Had to correct a few people I know about that. I am trained in that the less people know about you the better.
Big Brother is alive and well. And stronger than ever.

Sadly it's not still there except in the origins 20/60GB launch systems and 60/80GB systems with partial BC.
There is this persistent thought (almost an urban myth) that it's some kind of hidden feature in the firmware on all PS3s waiting for some golden day to be revealed. But it's not. Really it's not. If it was, Sony would not be re-mastering PS2 classics in HD for the PS3.
There are specific technical hurdles to doing BS in software on any system. They are very difficult to overcome, which is why the PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3 has always relied on some hardware. In the earliest systems it was a full PS2 chipset on the motherboard, and in the second generation PS3 models it was a modified Graphics Sythesizer (the PS2's GPU) along with a software Emulation of the Emotion Engine. However since all the PS2 hardware was removed from the PS3, there has been no PS2 compatibility in the box.

FATHASUN,
Just think of them as info sniffer's for governmental Skynet's & you should be safe, LOL.
didn't Sony patent some tech/software that would allow the cell to emulate the ps2 like a year or so ago?
@Highlander. Thats just my wishful thinking regarding BC. Technically I know Sony removed it. But spiritually I can feel it lingering. Most likely the cream of the crop titles will be remastered while others will most likely emerge as downloables.
@BikerSaint, I always said… Uncle Sam knows more about us than we do.
Oh I agree. When I got the PS3 it was the one console to rule them all.
Thin about it, a 60GB launch unit with an upgraded HDD is now 4 years old (more or less). It will play all PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, PSN titles, PS Minis, it will play CDs, SACDs, DVDs, and BluRay, It has wireless and wired Ethernet, BlueTooth, 4 USB ports, a flash memory reader, it will do SDTV, HDTV and now 3DTV, it streams content from the Net, or downloads it for later viewing. With the proper add-on it can also be a DVR (in certain markets). It'll do image and video editing, image and video sharing, web browsing and motion capture.
Holy crap, it really does do everything!
Of course it cost $600, but after 4 years my one is going strong, I can't help feeling that it was a bargain.
The slim's list is no less impressive

All that for $300, not bloody bad.
RadioHeader,
Only 5 million, it's a full 5 gallon tank.
And I'm about use at least 1/2 of it in a couple more minutes too, LOL
Highlander,
You sound just like me when I family our friends over. I break down all the features. I laugh when I see comments of people stating sarcastically, " What is its it?, You have stock in the company? And when I think about it. We kind of do. Taking into consideration all the time Ive put into gaming all these years and advocating my platform of choice then Hell Yes!!! When something works the way I want it to then I will back it up 100%. Which is why I have a 360 on my forehead.
By the way, did you get my PM?

Got it, and answered, thanks!
mwahahaha,
PS cant b ignored now bitches!
better bring those multiplats up to speed and keep those exclusives kicking @$$!
Fluffer,
Well, after 57 years, I've found that I'm my own best friend.
But, I'm also great friends with these 3 too..
"Me, myself, & I".
(BTW, I DO have real friends though, LOL)
I found that out after about 25 years 🙂
Pretty cool, I guess. I'm not ashamed to say that I in no way contributed to these statistics.
World,
I think I've got you beat, I found that out in Miss Connie's Romper Room, LOL
FaceBook and other social sites have their pros and cons. On the negative side, there's a lot of dangerous predators on them. On the plus side, there's a lot of innocent prey.
haha
Good pr for sony is good for all of us, it seems all this good pr they are getting is leading towards more people buying up ps3's. With more people buying ps3's we seem to be getting more and more exclusive content. It's a wonderful circle to be in.
As for b/c, my MGS4 edition has it and I love it, having missed out on tons of games from previous generations. I use my ps3 to catch up on a lot of awesome games that I missed out on. I do however realize why they removed b/c, most people are not me and don't use b/c that often, if at all.
"Get inside of me" lol, why don't more women say that?
I made a facebook account to hunt up old friends and it is pretty good for that. But I don't even talk to them anymore so it's kind of pointless. I did connect my PS3 account to it so every single thing I do in a game is posted there. And people must think all I do is play games, but hey games are more fun than collecting "friends" on facebook. I didn't even know you could follow the PS3?
The software PS2 emulator my PS3 has isn't good enough, we need full BC again!
i make fun of my buddy all the time because he has like 600+ friends on facebook and he spends half his time playin games on there. facebook whore is what i call him. so many people try to get me to spend time on facebook. its like that episode of south park, seriously. people get mad "hey i sent you a friend request, are we not friends?" ugh.
i just had a friend message me on there and she was like "damn i see your still playin games like a madman" ha ha. one of my few female friends with a ps3.
That was a great episode of South Park.
totally hilarious episode
Ha, I can't tell you how good it is to know you guys still watch south park too. Half my friends bug me about it like it's low brow and I should be ashamed that I still enjoy it so much… they just don't get it.
South Park low brow?
No, seriously, no. Yes the kids are foul mouthed, but the humor is definitely not lowbrow. Trey and Matt's humor is dark, sometimes too dark and not that funny, but it's always complex, satirical and far, far from low brow. Too many people can't get past the swearing and cartoon nature. Their loss.
Haha, i love that pic. To bad I only have half of a ps2 in mine (80gb):(
lets look at the truth of it. we lost ps2 b/c because sony wants to resell us our ps2 games redone for ps3 in hd. its a huge potential for money.
if they do it right they could have:
ps1 games on the psn
psn games on the psn
ps2 games for the ps2
ps2hd games for the ps3
ps3 games
psp games
ps mini games
sounds like a lot of revenue for sony on top of the ps+.
honestly my ps3 has b/c but i dont use it that often with the great games out now adays. the ps2 graphics dont stand up to ps3 graphics but my kid doesnt care when she wants to play her ps2 game on my ps3.
to be honest about it, i dont care for facebook at all. i dont like those sites as i dont like to be virtually stalked by people. i do however have one for the couple family members out of state that it helps to keep up with and share pics of my kid. other than that i just connect it to my ps3 and spam the hell out of it with trophies. 54 from heavy rain in the past week ha ha
I think you're being overly harsh on Sony. If Sony could have managed the trick of having full PS2 compatibility in the PS3 via software they would have done it. It's far easier to write one emulator and sell unmodified games via PSN than it is to 're-master' PS2 games in HD for PS3. Mostly this is because the re-mastering is essentially rewriting.
The original hardware BC was removed because of a) cost, and b) complexity of the motherboard. By removing it they cut the cost and made the motherboard cleaner and easier to cool.
The plan wasn't to re-master the games it was to do as they have with PS1 games and start selling PS2 games via PSN. But since the emulation doesn't work, they have to go with plan B – re-mastering.
yeah i totally understand all that highlander, and i didnt try to sound harsh towards sony. i love sony. i actually like the thought of plan b. they offered plan a to those of us that wanted it. everyone else said plan a was to expensive. im ok with plan b simply because great games will be made to look better and get more attention all over again.
I gotta admit, I am still wishing that they would have a premium SKU that included the BC chipset again. They wouldn't have to make that many, but hardcore game collectors would snap them up.
that's not surprising. when i saw their facebook integration i thought to myself, what excellent marketing!
I'm forever getting multiple invites from my friends.
But since Wastebook….er….Facebook want's me to sign up just to check out their page &/or leave a note, I'm NOT "F"ing doing it.
I just send them a email or IM, that I'll see them in person instead.
Sooo much more fun & better times, than typing a howdy-do to some on-site's wanted poster mug.
bloody oath they are!
they want the best of the best, well maybe not the best that would be PC but thats a different story.
i just got of ebay and i can not believe the price people are paying for the new iphone 4!
i saw one finish 10 minutes ago for the final price of TWO FU*KING GRAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who the ^%$# is crazy enough to pay 2K for a frigging phone!?
i always said people have too much money, and more money than brains but god they did not have to prove me right!
Non gaming related:
I love Facebook. Found some old friends I haven't seen in a long time.
BUT – it can become a big waste of time. Once you get in the groove of commenting and chatting with everybody on the News Feed then it is a HUGE WASTE OF YOUR TIME. Haha I just can't stop it.
Just think of it this way Banky,
All that time wasted on facebook, you could have been checking out prices on your next pair of purple checkered high-top Doc Martins with the double wide Dub lugs, LOL
the pick for this article is halarious
