Red Dead Redemption A “Game Changer” For Take-Two

Take-Two has historically had the same problem: in any year they don't release a Grand Theft Auto , they take a financial hit. But Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption should finally change that for fiscal 2010.

In speaking to VentureBeat , Take-Two CEO Ben Feder has said the pricey blockbuster, which has shipped over 5 million units to date and has supposedly (not official) passed the 4 million mark in actual sales, will turn a profit for the company. As several analysts stated, the epic Western would need to sell at least 4 million copies just to break even, as the rumored budget for the game that took nearly 6 years to produce came close to $100 million. Calling it a "game changer" for the company, Feder went on to say that "rushing a game to market has never ever been a successful strategy for anybody in this business." And as for the long development process:

"We have a very disciplined green-lighting process at Take-Two. We review the games constantly. In a formal way and an informal way even more frequently. We make decisions about four times a year on whether to proceed or not. It’s a truth-telling process. We had a sense the title would do well. We were not expecting this kind of audience. The guys at Rockstar have an unmatched track record in creating compelling content. It was also as robust a marketing plan as I have ever seen in my career. We took a few risks with it. We had a particular point of view on it."

And even after the high cost required to make and release the game, "it's going to contribute nicely to profits." Of course, it also helps that the game in question is a legitimate Game of the Year contender, and worthy of most all praise it receives. As GTA in the Old West, it's really a can't-miss for most gamers.

Can't deny the enjoyability of this game. But please. PLEASE. Fix the darn glitches. Matches are fine, but R* should focus on making the hideouts and Coops more enjoyable and less glitchy. I've had a session on The Herd where for 3 consecutive times the cows all died at the start of the mission…

this might be the start of a trend….

gta-like games…. in various time periods

i bought this game on day one, (which is something i rarely do)

sidenote… i think it's time gta games got away from america in terms of setting…
anywhere else would be a cool change of pace – australia, south africa, maybe even an intercontinental gta.. then in the far future, the moon – then after that? Mars B*tches…

IMO, it has to stay in america… part of the fun of the series is the witty american humor concerning our economy, politics, and our culture… these things would be lost on americans if this game was in europe…

leave the foreign turf for the drivers, getaways, and true crimes…

This game is quite possibly RockStar's best game. It's quite story driven with lengthy cut scenes and great set pieces. The dialogue is very well written and the voice acting is top notch. The "acting" is so spot on, I find myself laughing out loud at the facial expressions of CGI characters. The game play controls are perfect.

Even something as trivial as the mini-games are fantastic. I never found myself playing much of the mini-games in GTA, the ones in RDR however keep me coming back for more. I'm hooked on "liar's dice". "Are you full of $#!? I wonder?" LOL!

I also play the mini-games once in a while… and the fun thing is, if your opponent annoys you, you just stand up and shoot him.

This game is much overrated in my opinion. After finishing singleplayer in most of the trophies, there is no replay-value. Multiplay so many glitches, what to do with earn money, not to speak about co-op (see SPIDERBOI + many times freezing while loading).

A good decent game but no 10.

Can't disagree more than I do right now. Also I have yet to experience a game breaking glitch on a MW2 scale yet. No overabundance of attack helicopters, or people hiding in walls. Get over it an open world game has some glitches, if I can still enjoy a game in spite of it's hiccups which most games have, I look at the experience.

I may have mentioned it has glitches but yes i do agree it hasn't reached that MW2 glitch-dom status to the point it has become unfun. Some of killstreaks and a certain birthday-suit perk are waay too overpowered to be enjoyed specially when being spammed and on the receiving end.

Never really fancied trying RDR, still don't.

My appreciation of GTA (III, VC and SA) was simple. I loved them for the car's handling and cool soundtracks. Then GTAIV came along with its slow driving and terrible soundtrack. Now it's GTA in the old West, where the cars (horses) are even slower and don't have stereos in them.

I think I'm probably a bit too shallow to appreciate this game.

Its a decent enough game but its not GOTY material like people are predicting. Too many bugs get in the way of really enjoying the game.

I could probably handle the glitches (enjoyed Just Cause 2). It's just that I think open world games should be fun to traverse – like Just Cause 2, inFamous, all the GTAIIIs. Riding a horse across the desert sounds a bit boring to me.

well I personally experienced way more glitches in RDR than in JC2.

As for the horses, yeah just riding to get from A to B gets boring and I found myself fast tracking quite often.

I really enjoyed RDR, but I think it gets more credit than its due, because it's different. If it had been a GTA I think it would have been more criticized for being so glitchy.

I'm one of the lucky ones! I havn't experienced any glitches accept for a few freezes. So I have no choice but to disagree with you guys lol. Sorry.

About the horses. I can see why people would say its boring, but its quite enjoyable and a huge aspect of enjoying the setting of the game. Not many games let you cross the map and set the layout of the map for you to deeply enjoy the scenery like RDR. Have you seen those sunsets, or experienced a heavy down poor while in the middle of no where? Pretty amazing while crossing the great plains of the old west!

This is my favorite game ever, I love it.
all thou I never really got into GTA. one I play GTA I'm always driving around and seeing how many stars I can get before I die. oh yea and putting in a bunch of cheats.
RDR gets GOTY if GT5 doesn't.

Dammit, well it looks like I am going to have to pick this game up. I just keep hearing great things about it and I am feeling extremely left out now.

I think that RDR will probably get some GOTY nominations, but I don't think a game with that many glitches deserves it.

I enjoyed the game, but how can people expect to give a game GOTY when there are other amazing games that are glitch free and have better stories, gameplay, and graphics.

Loved the game…hands down, the voice acting is some of the best I have ever experienced in a game. The story was intriguing and let's face it…while many games are now delivering less than 8hrs of gameply…this game gave me 20+hours from start to finish….and I still have side missions to complete. I definately got my money's worth and a whole lot more. I'm already itchin to hear about the sequel!!

I love this game. I must be lucky, because I have only experienced a few glitches. However, I do know someone that has had the game glitch on him quite a bit. I have my platinum and continue to play it. Too bad the glitches other people are getting are plaguing them… (did I spell that right?)

I still hate that people compare this game to GTA. RDR can stand alone with out being compared to GTA. I don't care bout the HUD, the map, the marking of waypoints, that can be said about %100 of all sandbox games. RDR is a experience all in its own! Ill accept that they share similarities, and agree to it. But to say its "GTA in the old west", I can't agree with. It's Red Dead Redemption in the old west!

Either way Rock Star made a gem of a game, and as hard as it is for me to say it, it is my favorite game so far this year! That's stretching it, maybe the game I enjoyed to play the most this year. GOW 3 is probably the best game so far, all things considered, this year in my eyes. Keep in mind sadly I've yet to play Heavy Rain, summer draught should help me catch up though!

i dont see why they would, i mean every game they have made has scored in the 9s!
the only reason they would be loosing money is because they take there sweet time to make games!
mafia 2, LA Noire, GTAIV, RDR, and so on all took 4+ years to make!
im starting to hear LA Noire wont make it out this year, team bondi have hit a snag in debugging the game so it will probably be out early 2011.
thats why 2K did not show up at E3, which seemed really peculiar to me i thought they would of at least showed off mafia 2.
looks like max payne 3 is going to slip through another year.
AGAIN!
as if going from late 2009 to 2010 was not enough, now its going to slip from 2010 to early 2011!
than they wonder why there not making much cashola!
