Gran Turismo 5 To Boast Track Editor And Go-Kart Racing

So we know Gran Turismo 5 is set to release on November 2, and we've also heard about the amazing Premium vehicles.

But if you think you know everything there is to know, Sony Wordwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida wishes to disabuse you of such a notion. You can read the full interview if you so desire, but the highlight in our eyes was the mention of previously unannounced elements in the game…including a track editor and go-karts. The info came in the following sentence, where Yoshida says everyone gets:

"…a driving experience to suit, whether that is taking on the Top Gear test track, chucking cars around stunt arenas, go-karting, creating and sharing your own track or intense head-to-head races."

He also talks about "game-enhancing graphical effects;" we know about the damage model and the weather effects have been rumored, but this is certainly official. The idea of a track editor is something that should appeal to most all hardcore racers out there, but we have to admit to being surprised at the go-kart revelation. Really? Must be for when the father finally gets tired of ripping around Laguna Seca in a supercar and then hands it off to the kid, saying, "here you go son, practice."

TOCA did have truck racing, these were special race trucks but still quite fun. I'ld love to tune out a Dajiban…but thats unlikely.

I think it did Stig, I loved that game. When I moved to the US my copy wouldn't play and I haven't been able to recapture the same experience on US consoles (not sure why).

You know what im surprised about. Is that this game isnt going to cost 100.00 to buy lol. SO much packed in its ridiculous. This will defanitley be worth my 60.00 dollars

Oh definitely. I consider 60 bucks cheap for a game at this caliber.

I remember early on in one article I read, it said there would also be bike racing included in GT 5 too.

But for the life of me, I've neither seen or heard another word about it.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if they just decided to dump all of the bikes into "Tourist Trophy", instead.

There are actually quiet a few articles about it. Kaz says it's possible, but haven't really put that much thought into it.

When GT5 was first announced waaay back when Sony first revealed the PS3(that GT concept vid), PD talked about having bikes but it was never really talked about again.

We may have to, not, take this 100% into consideration yet. Something about kart racing, track editor, and create/share in one paragraph might refer to Modnation. Was this article translated?

I just hope the track editor thing is true, no matter how simple it is. Like we should always do, unless it's something from a Kaz interview or official site, it can never be 100% confirmed. Heck we had a Sony Executive that commented about a September release, and now we know that's not true.

It's the head of SCE worldwide Studios…

Here's the full quote about GT 5 (and the question this is in answer to is specific about GT5);

"Gran Turismo 5 will offer gamers an experience more rich, more in-depth and more exciting than they might expect – even from a series as closely identified with innovation and invention as Gran Turismo. Not only will Gran Turismo 5 deliver an even more comprehensive set of cars and courses than gamers saw with previous iterations, it will also feature new game-enhacing graphical effects such as damage, night racing and weather.

These innovations are twinned with the option to join millions of like-minded individuals globally within the Gran Turismo community and to find a driving experience to suit, whether that is taking on the Top Gear test track, chucking cars around stunt arenas, go-karting, creating and sharing your own track or intense head-to-head races. Who, where and what to drive is completely down to the individual.

This time around Gran Turismo is likely not just to be the definitive driving experience but a definitive gaming experience full stop."

Yeah, I've read it since this morning, before ign or psx put it up. I personally thought you'd be the one to say unless it comes from PD or Kaz, you won't hold anything concrete. Jk, just messing with you.

Seriously though, it's not a "direct" source. Like the PSM magazine dilemma and other mistakes by Sony Spokesman, no matter their position, they do make mistakes. This is something I've been through a lot.

If it's 100% true then this just says a lot 'bout Polyphony and the capabilities of blu-ray

Packed? that's an understatement!

The track editor could be fun, I just hope it's reliable and doesn't make the game look bad or something…

Go-karts?! Wicked! I think it would help get peoples feet wet if they feel a bit overwhelmed or intimidated by the serious nature of GT..

Maybe some sim go-kart time will make the idiots I get bogged down by when I do go kartin run their apexes more accurately! 😛

Talk about a company going above and beyond with their game. Other companies need to step up to the new bar set by polyphony.

heck yeah, let's get some rpgs with some level creation for online. You could do game modes like WKC and let ppl put in their own quest and monsters.

So how many hours do they plan us to log in this game? Probably at least as long as the total man hours put into development. That is 150 people for 5.5 years at eight hours a day, five days a week. 0.o I don't think I'm going to live that many hours… Oh well, at least between this and LBP2, I won't have to buy any games through 2011. TRICKIN'!

Peace.

Well, to me playing 500 hours in a Gran Turismo title is reasonable.

With everything that GT5 has, my game playing outside of PD's masterpiece could come to a close for quite some time.

I could see myself playing GT5 for 1000 hours plus.

I think Yama is jamming everything he can into the 50GB Blu Ray till he can't even fit a string of hair.

Should we be surprised if GT5 somehow sell 15 million copies?

One thing I'm really looking forward to is being able to use the music on my PS3 to create custom soundtracks. Finally, some classic Van Halen while I'm watching replays!

Stunt arena! …where the hell did that come from? I guess they must have seen their new flippin n tumblin physics and thought we gotta do something extra with this.

For me, this is a D1P, a D2P, a D3P and a D4P! …it's no more than they deserve 🙂

Good stuff, a track editor will be good. As for the karting bring it to the game, the more this game has the more it will be the best racing game out there bar none.

As for Mod Nation Races I enjoy playing it ok the loads times can be a bit of a pain but you soon get over that fact. I have enjoyed racing on tons of good tracks already.

You know, they talked about having a beginner "school" where it teaches the novices how to drive and race. Perhaps the kart is the start of the journey for those people?

Amazingly enough, there is still 5 months a development time (roughly). I have a feeling things will be quite nicely by then.

With 2 major gaming shows out there to go before Novemember 2nd, I would be willing to bet that the feature list is not yet completely announced!!

Wow track editor thats freak'n awesome and the go-kart sounds prety cool. Wow this is going to be the best $60 I ever spend. GT5 is going to be the only game that is worth more then what you pay for it uselly the game is'nt worth the full $60. I can't wait for this to finaly be here.

GT5 for GOTY, if not I hope RDR gets it.

That's so awesome! I mean, the go kart racing is fun, but all the yanking at my G25 will probably break my table of its legs (as it isn't very well-built, I believe it's an Ikea table).

But the track editor is a really nice touch and I'm really in for the "stunt tracks" they're mentioning. I mean, who doesn't want to try to do a barrel roll in a Zonda?
