Ever since the unveiling of 3D gaming, it has been a common question: "will this compromise uber-slick high-definition graphics?"
Many have said "yes" in response to this question, as many journalists and industry insiders have seen certain games in 3D, and it was clear the resolution took a substantial hit. However, technology will continue to get better and Sony has already said that games designed with 3D in mind will look far better than games that were "retrofitted" for the new perspective. This is why Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst told VideoGamer that 3D "has not compromised the fidelity of the sequel's graphics." Said Hulst:
"It's a different way of rendering. But I don't think it does. Not when we're done and dusted. You can have all the fidelity, all the performance that you require, but it's obviously a different way of going about things, it's not apples for apples necessarily."
We saw some amazing footage of KZ3 running on stage at Sony's E3 press conference, and Hulst said this footage was "months out from alpha, and already it's running very smoothly, running at an impressive fidelity." And of course, the team still has time to make some adjustments and enhancements; the highly anticipated FPS won't arrive until February 2011. But if he's right, and we can keep the unbelievable visual quality when we make the leap to 3D, that might be worth the price of admission.

No intention of running out and getting a #D TV just yet. But I think KZ3 on my 52" HDTV will suffice.
lol@ Shift-fail, looks like you are a button masher 😉
lol I do the same thing all the time 😛
Well this is good news, because I'd rather have HD than 3D. I'll still want to see the 3d for myself and until then I'll just play these uber awesome games in HD and worry about 3d later.
Completely agree on seeing 3D and making an evaluation based on what I see and where I think it can go/potential in gaming & other media.
Am I mistaken or are 3D Tvs not capable of displaying high definition resolution without projecting a 3D effect?
This is great news but it will still be a long long time before I get a 3dtv unless I win the lottery.
I'm a little confused as to how this is possible, but I'm not a game developer so yeah, awesome!
What I would like to see from all this is an end to the unstable 30 FPS era. If Guerilla can give us a smooth running 3D experience, then other devs should definitely be able to achieve a rock-solid 30 or 60 FPS in 2D (I'm talking mostly about those pesky multiplats).
Sadly many gamers won't even get to play KZ3 in 3D until maybe 1 or 2 years after it is released. Sony wants me to be hyped up for 3D, but why should I, I mean its nice that they are able to bring this feature to gamers, but buying another TV is just pushing it. That money is better spent elsewhere, especially for someone who is trying to finish their high education and so on. If I had kids though, I would buy this just for them and Move just to see the smile on their face, but I don't and I will even consider buying KZ3 with 3D in mind. I hope they can get rid of the in game loading because I was always tempted to turn off my PS3.
As long as the 2-D version looks as good as it would have if 3-D hadn't been invented – that's all I care about.
Oh, and get rid of the in-game loading times as well.
Heh, I'll believe it when I see it. But then, this isn't being retroactively fitted with 3D, so maybe it makes sense that they can take advantage of the processors of the PS3 to render it in real time, in full HD and 30fps. I'll have to think more.
Peace.
Anyone who thinks this is going to have bad graphics because of 3D hasn't seen the gameplay preview.
I did see some polygon/texture/lighting anomalies (e.g. pop-ins) and frame rate hits in that video, but it's still a work-in-progress, so likely won't be there in the final version.
As long as it doesn't affect my 2D experience I'm fine with it.
Ya that is the Fortune Hunter edition that I won here at PSXE. I figured that since LOST was over, it was time for a new avatar.
PS. I have been coming here for a couple years now. I check the website daily, just dont comment all the time.

"But if he's right, and we can keep the unbelievable visual quality when we make the leap to 3D, that might be worth the price of admission."
Already saving up.
you and me both
Me three.
I wasn't all that impressed with the E3 gameplay demos, but for those of you who haven't seen IGN's Killzone 3 E3 special yesterday I can recommend it! Finally I'm getting more excited about the game, I have no idea why they didn't show that footage on stage instead. A lot more going on, big set pieces, destructive environments, nice water splashes up on the shore, nice vistas, brutal melee attacks etc.
I just hope that they aren't limiting the 2D graphics details settings to what can be done while keeping 3D enabled, because it's pretty obvious that however powerful the PS3 is, enabling 3D WILL take a toll on how many polygons/textures/effects can be displayed on screen at one time.
I've been to Sonystyle awhile ago and tested the 3d demo they have with MLB The Show 2010 which looks really awesome, I have to admit that 3D effect does really add to the immersion on the game compared to my non-HDTV set. Now, I'm really looking forward of my next upgrade even though I still don't have the cash, but from what I have seen I will be on board when I can finally afford 3d TV's. I know alot of people are not yet interested which is bec. the technology is still new and expensive at the moment. Also, I don't buy the reason that people they don't like 3d, I'm sure if you have the extra cash to spend you'll probably get these new 3d tv's.
I have a hard time believing this. As Hulst himself says, it's not apples for apples. I take that to mean that something's gotta give.
Hopefully the 3D end of it. I like the addition but i think making the game look good for the majority of people who wont be getting 3D is a bigger priority.
Should be anyway..
Indeed, I can't wait until this mass consumerism of 3D makes the technology convenient and reasonably affordable for upgraders.
I just look at it this way, I just made it out of a LCD boom with a winner. In fact, I love the Sharp Aquos 52" w/ 120hz (granted, I'm not sure if that's hardware or "rendered"). Gaming is great and immense. Kind of brings out the worst in some FSAA, but distance from the set resolves most of it!
Once I'm ready to give it up, once I'm ready to dedicate the entire human lifestyle shift of wearing 3D glasses to watch tv..
In the meantime, everything about it will get better. I have no doubt that it'll be worth the purchase within it's first year. It'll just be a slow, financially cautious, start..
I was so happy after finally getting a 40" HDTV and know it seems that it's outdated.I'm confident the 3D games will begin to pick up and it will make people want to buy a PS3; I also hope to join the craze by 2013.
How much better would it have looked if they didn't bother with 3D?
dunno if this is true, doubt it is but i read yesterday that KZ3 is suppose to be locked at 60FPS whether your using 3D or 2D.
if thats true ill eat my hat because KZ2 struggled to keep at 30FPS let alone 60!
I'm finally going through some of my huge backlog of games, & have been playing K2 for the last few days now.
So the only thing I really want fixed in K2 is the damned continuous load times that been causing hic-cupping making for a couple seconds of game stuttering lag time all through the game. And that has also caused my game to freeze up twice too.
I love everything about the game, including the weight of the weapons, but these constant hic-ups are more than a constant irritation.
