E3 2010: Metal Gear Solid: Rising Cuts Its Way Into Our Hearts

The purists may not like the fact that Metal Gear Solid has gone all Ninja Gaiden with Metal Gear Solid: Rising but…good goddamn, maybe you haven't seen this yet.

Konami has officially announced Rising for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and along with that unveiling came the very first gameplay footage. This third-person action slashfest appears to be beautifully choreographed and designed; Raiden as the lead character should definitely shine. The flashy ninja has been "revamped with upgraded cyborg technology resulting in a fluid style of gameplay simply described as 'Lightning Bolt Action.'" In all honesty, we weren't holding out much hope for this one but we obviously forgot that anything related to MGS is basically awesome.

So, what do you think? Pretty sweet, huh? No, there probably won't be much in the way of stealth but quality is quality. Besides, we have every confidence that Kojima and Co. will eventually release another stealth-oriented MGS at some point in the future. And don't forget that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP is considered to be "MGS5" by the designers and it's a legitimate portable Game of the Year contender.

They might of had Kojima San on there stage displaying a rip off MGS, but remember we had GABE NEWELL ON THE PlasyStation stage saying our version would be better, I mean, think honestly, our cards win. We had the world's biggest X-Bot fanboy come on our stage and say our machine was better LMAO.

Well, according to an ign interview Rising will still include stealth elements if stealth suits the player's style.

Looks like this will be the first MGS game to be completely banned in Japan – no way CERO will pass 'Metal Gear Solid: Rising slashfest action' even with an 'Z' rating.

Kojima said a while back that he's about to break a certain industry taboo and may retire altogether if he screws up.
After that trailer I guess he referred to Japan only. Us bloodthirsty westerners like the red stuff, well except German game censors, but that's a different story (it's funny if you're German ^^).

I never was expecting much from an MGS spin-off title, especially after reading that MGS4 was the first PS3 game to utilize the whole DL BR disc.
Guess Rising won't feature that many pre-rendered cut-scenes then 😛
But the E3 trailer changed my opinion, looks rad.

Consider my interest piqued.

Why would this be banned in Japan? There way worse forms of entertainment to consume there. How could this be banned and not Fist of the North Star?

Well Jawk, you have to understand that Japanese Game Censors (CERO) are amongst the strictest ratings boards worldwide. Probably even worse than USK (and USK is really tough on games with any blood/violence).

They're kinda twisted. We know that Japanese entertainment industry produces the world's weirdest/sickest shit. But it's different with games. Guess they are so strict on games as they are interactive media.

Let's take NMH as an example. The game was heavily censored in Japan (and Europe), as well as the PS3 HD remake. Only uncensored versions were the US-NTSC ones (Wii and 360).
Mad World wasn't even released in Japan – where the Wii install base is rather large – as CERO would certainly refuse classification.

Extremely violent games are either not released at all in Japan or only in heavily censored/edited forms, it's very similar to Germany.

Fist of the North Star (and RGG aka. Yakuza) are bloody games but they're no way as graphic as Rising.
I don't think blood is an issue to CERO, it's rather graphic violence and gore. Hence no Mad World and NMH only heavily censored.

Fist of the North Star got added violence for its western release if I remember properly.

I can assure you that CERO won't pass even their highest 'Z' rating, which is legally enforceable, on MGSR. Heck, they even Censored GOW3 (which got an 'Z' rating) – dunno whether there were any violence-related cuts, but the Aphrodite scene was too hot for CERO, so they replaced the vestments for non-revealing ones.

Porn is just fine too…..as long as the pubic hair is censored.

Ya, they're absolutely weird. I don't try to understand them or their motives for censorship. They can censor to their hearts' contents, as long as I get the opportunity to purchase the unedited version ^^

I've got no concerns for Kojima, worst case scenario: No MGSR release in Japan. Not a problem to him – he intended it for an international/western audience anyways 😛

It'll sell for sure.

Seems this is yet another well established Sony franchise that's being watered down into an action titled for the Twitch Gaming generation.

Thanks MS. You have created a generation of Twitchy gamers who can't sit through 5 minutes of cut scenes.

All the comments on the IGN forum are something like this.."this is the MGS i have been waiting for, hopefully it doesn't have cut scenese like MGS4 and oh, i thought this was an Xbox exclusive, what gives??"

ro kurorai
ro kurorai

Don't worry (or do worry, however you take it ^^) – there won't be many cut-scenes in MGSR. They're restrained to a single DVD and twitch gamers don't like 'boring movies w/o twitch action' anyways.

Yea, MS probably ruined that one. I'll wait for more gameplay info and reviews anyways.
Maybe it'll turn out decent after all.

Why are people still calling MGS a "Sony franchise"? The PS2/PS3 may have the best games in the series and most of the titles may have appeared on Playstation, but Sony doesn't own the IP. Strange that no one's making a big deal over the MGS title that's coming to the 3DS

Wow, so much dislike here for MGS Lite here.

Although I'd rather all of MGS games staying on the PS3, I'm still happy to be able to play any new MGS game, even if it's only a spin-off one.

Matter of fact, I wouldn't mind see Kojima Productions make a spin-off game based on each & every one of the characters in MGS, but just give them all to me on the PS3.

They could show the storyline of how each character got to the stage where they're at now, with everything that led up to this point in history, and utilize their own perspectives to make each story different.

Come on now, I mean who else wouldn't also want to see the history of Meryl done, as seen from her very own beautiful eyes????

I sure f*cking know I would!!!!!

porting/remaking later on is different from multiple formats from the get go… that has what has happened in the past. yes it has appeared on multiple platforms in the past. but it is a playstation franchise. that's where mgs is most at home.

I have no problem with rising going multi anyway, even if it suffers, for me I see no evidence of a emotionally engaging story befitting the franchise there to begin with, exclusive or not. Peace Walker which I'm about to fire up is where it's at.

I absolutely loved MGS2 for me it was better than three, the fight with Vamp for me was priceless and the ending was superb of course excluding the first cause it's the original, 4 is the best.

As for rising it aint a metal gear but if Kojima is welling to put his name on it who am I to say it will not be good, now after getting TM all I want is the new ZOE and FFViii sequel yeah @eLLeJuss i said it 8 is better than 7 .lol

I have no problem at all with a game starring Raiden, and this one looks really cool to me. But Konami should drop the "Metal Gear Solid" part of the title. This is way too far removed to justify carrying that name.

I'm sorry but MGS4 is 2 years old, granted it has some of the best graphics in video games, but this games graphics didn't look as good. The video footage looks good, but the gameplay graphics take an obvious hit.

Granted it was shown on 360, so might be ok on ps3, but from what I saw on g4tv in Hd, it wasn't as good.

As for the gameplay, honestly being able to cut a watermelon doesn't make me ooooh and aaah. I'm not a fan of twitch gaming hack n slash and so unless there is a lot more to this game than what is shown, I'll probably have to pass.

Sad, because MGS4 was so amazing.

My take on that watermelon chopping was just a quick little Kojima Productions parody on themselves.

Kojima's known for a shitz & giggles, or two inside his games, just like his little snicker…."time to change the disc,…oh wait it's a PS3"(or words close to that effect).

And that just tells me even though they toil hard honing their craft, they're also showing everyone they have fun doing it too.

Psyched for this even if it is a multiplat.

Slightly off-topic: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D on the 3DS??!?!? Why not the PSP? Or even a remake to play on the PS3? Why oh why oh WHY??!?!

SmokeyPSD

I'm inclined to think it was just a tech demo, a la FF 7. what would the reason be to remake 3 inparticular. and why wouldnt the psp get it. etc etc.

You know, MGS2 was the first of that franchise I played, and I quite loved it. I was expecting Raiden to be a lot worse than he was, but it was all good. Kinda reminded me of me. Anyway, I liked it enough to buy MGS4, and add some GOW style to MGS and it'll be awesome. I honestly hope though that there is some strategy to the attacks. And I hope that this can redefine the action genre. If any dev can it's Kojima Productions.

Either way, I will get this. More info will determine whether it's a D1P, but I have a good feeling. Also, where's my cutscenes damnit. If this doesn't have at least four hours, I'm going to be disappointed. Follow S-E's example and put it on three discs if you must.
Peace.

This looks good in some respects but what i want to know is how indepth the story will be. i mean this isn't even the true successor to MGS4 so…

The gameplay wouldn't win me over. I've got GOW3 for awesome sword fighting. But this does look pretty good. I'll keep my eye on it.

The gameplay looks good, but that cutscene they showed us was awful, look how ugly that soldier looks hin his childlike armor, i was glad he was ripped apart!

While i am interested in this project i can see it going in a bad direction, an over the top manga style direction…

this was by far the most impressive video i have seen from E3 so far.
for one simple reason, it delivers on what it promises.
they said cut, take. and they certainly did allot of that!
id love to see this added with move support, it was so cool the way you could trip enemies up than slow down time and slice them horizontally in half!
i think i have my substitute for ninja gaiden.
actually, this is looking like the best sword fighting game ever released!
Kojima strikes again!
he has the Midas touch, everything he touches turns to gold!

I'm detecting a lot of pessimism. I for one am thrilled for this game. MGS is one of the greatest game titles of all time. This may not be your favorite, but cmon guys it's still going to be one hell of a game. This trailer didn't even mention the story and we all know that's going to be another mind bending experience.

Dose any have any idea how this game works? Is the game engine just calculating new polygons on the spot after you bifurcate an enemy or is this voxelmaping of some sort??

Also, Arnold or Ben still waiting on that Peach Walker review?

I love all the Metal Gear Games. I agree with Jawknee I was like maybe I'll get to play as Snake later on. Nothing, then Snake helps you and you bump into him thats when he says use my name Pliskin (a reference to Escape From New York's Snake Pliskin played by Kurt Russell).
