Yamauchi: GT5 Date Is Finally Final

Last fall, it was revealed at the Tokyo Game Show that Gran Turismo 5 would launch in Japan come March 2010.

But that didn't happen, as Polyphony Digital delayed the hotly anticipated racer, likely to add some final tweaks and 3D compatibility. But because we've already had one significant delay, there are some who aren't taking yesterday's announcement as gospel. We suppose we can't blame them. However, according to what GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi has told CVG , that November 2 release date is written in stone. The only answer fans should need from the master is the thumbs-up sign and a "yes" when asked if we can be sure of no further delays. We're wondering if Sony had a little something to do with this…with God of War III and Heavy Rain cementing the first quarter of 2010, they probably didn't want to overload the first part of the year and only go into the holiday season with LittleBigPlanet 2 and SOCOM 4 . GT5 is the PS3 exclusive that should assure Sony of another great Christmas so maybe, just maybe, Sony had some input on the matter.  It's logical business sense, after all.

Look at Twisted Metal . Dave Jaffe once told us he'd "shout it from the rooftops" if he could, but the ball was always in Sony's court, so we all had to stay quiet.

I will be pre-ordering this but I'm still waiting for all of the pre-order bonuses that every retailer is going to boast about. So far, Amazon is looking good.

I was hoping that Sony would want to fill the Summer "gap," but I guess Fall works too. I won't be able to play it as much though. Got lots of stuff to worry about in college.

Also, I don't understand the holiday boost thing. If a game were to release earlier in the year, does it really effect the sales in the holiday season? For example, if GT5 is to release in January/Summer 2010, does it mean less sales in the holidays than if it were to release close to the holiday season?

Actually it easily could, a lot of parents who buy games for their kids for christmas don't know anything about video games and they will just go to the store and pick up the newest big title. Plus that means it'll be on tv when parents are looking at what to get their kids for christmas.

Some kids only get games from ppl at christmas so it's a big selling time and it could make a bigger difference than you'd think. I know when I was a kid, christmas and birthday was about the only time I got stuff.

I thought the ads would show all the hottest titles anyway, and not just the most recent ones. The part about the TV part makes sense though.

No kidding. But after a few years of waiting, a few months isn't going to kill me.

Yeah, same here. I know we've been waiting for years and 5 months is probably nothing, but like waiting for e3 for the past month, it feels like years.. sort of, but it felt loong and still felt long when it was 3 days, 2 days, and even 1 day away.

Phew, "finally final"…finally! Only one question remains: Is it officially official? Because there is no disputing that this will be the indisputable champion of any games with wheels (Wipeout will always have a place in my heart).

Well, that holiday season release being dictated by Sony sounds sensible.
That way great PS3 exclusives are scattered over the whole year. And next year we'll get Last Guardian, FFvXIII and Twisted-fuckin'-Metal!

Well, I'm still hoping for the first two games but TM will certainly don Sony a few hardware sales. Now imagine TM being 3D compatible at launch =)

I hope he realizes that people will hold him personally accountable for the date if it is missed…

True, but Sony can always change it unfortunately. Say they want Kaz to implement Stereoscopic 3D in the last minute to compete with the 3DS (just an example bty).

Sony always have the final word. *GTPSP *cough *cough

Stereoscopic 3D and regular play modes are on the same disc – already announced. But I do tak your point. However, when the developer of the game states the date is final, it kinda sorta needs to be final.

Yikes, I meant the 3D without the need for glasses thing (hence the relation to Ninento 3DS), in the case that TVs like that is in store. Of course, this is just a far-fetched example.

In the case of GTPSP, Kaz (in his own account I guess) has multiple times said that it will continue its development after GT5 is done. Unfortunately this wasn't the case and a lot fans went against him for doing that, probably also because of the reasons that it might looked like a rushed production. Sony was never in the minds of the people who are mad by the turn of events, but it should.

I definitely get what you mean by the way, and I'd feel really bad for Kaz if things do change. The article clearly states about any other possible delays in mind, unlike the time when he announced March 2010 from last year's TGS.

From te sounds of things, the 3D on the DS is achieved through the same polarization tricks used on 3D cups and such. In other words, it's a total illusion.

I took the date as set in stone anyways.

Glad for another confirmation.

I feel compelled to get this if only for my friends who like driving games.
It's not exactly my cup of tea but it would be fun to play with my friend and see what he thinks.

I know what you mean. I have a friend who isn't into driving/racing games as much but I keep hearing that he's going to get it, possibly because it's a well known title and looks awesome graphic wise. What is probably be true is that the people who plans to buy GT5 is not all racing enthusiasts. Not a lot of franchise can do that.

Bike Racing? I haven't heard anything about bike racing. If it's true then I'll give another YEEEESSSS!

So far GT5 sounds to be the ONLY racing game anybody will need- typical Gran Turismo greatness, Nascar, WRC, and now bikes? Why would you have to buy any other racer? 🙂

The trailer was very very impressive but the only part that disappoint a bit was when the car crashed, the car paint remains despite losing a door.
