Sega Announces Dreamcast Classics For PSN, XBLA

You just gotta love the good ol' days when straight-up colorful arcade goodness was all over the shelves for the Dreamcast.

And Sega wants you to relive it. Sega Europe and Sega of America have announced their intention to bring several Dreamcast classics to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. The first two will be Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure , two of the very best titles available for Sega's last piece of hardware; Sonic will come first to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Dreamcast this fall. Each game in the plan is "based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with." But Sega will also toss in a bunch of enhancements and improvements, such as new high-resolution visuals, surround sound, online leaderboards, and of course, Trophies and Achievements.

If you had forgotten, the Dreamcast dropped on September 9, 1999 (yep, 9/9/99) and remains one of the most beloved consoles in history. It also introduced online support for the very first time with the addition of an online modem. Said Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at Sega of America and Sega Europe:

"The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming. There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems."

The timing was just bad. Sony released the PS2 a little over a year later in the US and that marked the beginning of the end for Sega's hardware ventures. That doesn't stop the Dreamcast's short lifespan from being revered by many who really loved that style of gaming, though.

Hmm those 2 games aren't as good as I remember. I'll pass until they bring out something better. Maybe power stone or berserk.

Sonic Adventure… mine… day one.

I mean, really, how do you make the perfect Sonic game even better? You add HD visuals and trophy support! So can NOT wait!!!

Other Dreamcast games I want on my PS3: Sonic Adventure 2, Shenmue (and the second one if possible), Soul Calibur 1 and Mortal Kombat Gold.

Oh, and Seaman. I miss that creepy man-fish hybrid.

Dreamcast short lifetime??? It was in production from 1999-2002 and so many units were made you can still buy new ones (esp. in Japan). And games were even made for it until 2007 (again, in Japan). Well, I guess 3.5-4 'official' years is a little short.

Good times.
I still have my original Dreamcast, along with 5 controllers(4 still new in box), the fishing pole controller, 2 Dreamcast keyboards, a couple of rumble packs, & 18 of the MVU's(in various colors), that also let you play &/or trade the mini-games on.

I have 48 games for it, but I'd still like to see my Wetrix, Zombie Revenge, & Seaman re-done up in all the PS3's glory.

Definitly a good idea to bring some of the Sega classics to the PSN. The network continues to grow with better and more diverse media 🙂

This would be great. I missed a bunch of games on the Dreamcast.

Now Sony just needs to start adding PS2 games to the Playstation store. 🙂

I didn't really get into gaming until after dreamcast had pretty much died off, so I've only played like 2 games on dreamcast.

So for me this would be excellent, I know lots of ppl love their dreamcasts and its games so I'd love to get a shot at playing them, especially in hd with trophies.

I still have my limited edition Japanese Dreamcast, but this is excellent news for those who never had this console.

I admit that I bough a Dreamcast jut to play the Sakura Taisen games, but I have heard of other excellent games that I would definitely love to play. Among those that I keep getting good feedback were Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue. So yeah, I'm glad to hear that this is finally coming to fruition!
