Remember how one analyst thought Rockstar needed to sell 4 million copies of Red Dead Redemption just to break even? Well, goodbye to the black and red parts of the graph; hello to the green.
Take-Two Interactive has announced that the epic Western-themed masterpiece has sold 5 million total copies across the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. In other words, the game is set to turn a profit in its very first quarter on store shelves. Even so, this information doesn't help the company's bottom line for their latest quarterly results; RDR released outside the February-April quarter, so they can't benefit from Rockstar's latest gem until next time 'round. Even so, Take-Two's earning report for the period showed a 54% sales increase in a year-over-year comparison; from $174.3 million in 2009 to the $268 million just recorded. The publisher was able to reverse last year's $10.4 million overall loss, posting a $16.9 million profit for the previous quarter. Top releases include Bioshock 2 , Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City , and Major League Baseball 2K10 , with continued strong sales for NBA 2K10 and Grand Theft Auto IV . To date, the latter has sold a mammoth 17 million units on the PS3, 360, and PC since its record-setting launch back in April 2008.
Due to the positive quarterly results, Take-Two has raised their full-year expectations, as they now anticipate raking in between $880 million and $980 million in their fiscal year ending October 31, 2010. On the downside of things, it has been announced that Max Payne 3 must once again be delayed; this time, it has slipped outside of their fiscal year. Still, L.A. Noire , Mafia II and Civilization V remain on track. You won't be seeing any of them at E3, though, because it has also been confirmed that Rockstar won't be showing any games at the trade show next week.
Not showing any games at E3 is a mistake. I don't see how they have all these games coming but aren't interested in showing them off.
so i dont really remember but has rockstar ever really shown very many of their games off at e3?
Last one I remember was GTAIV and if memory serves, it was a great moment.
I forgot where I just read it yesterday, but one of R*'s own guys said that E3 didn't allot them enough time to show off "all" the games they wanted to showcase.
So R* has decided to not do E3 at all, in order that they can hold their very own upcoming show very soon.

yeah see that makes more sense to me. rockstar has enough content.
come on alienage, they wouldn't be R* if they didn't live up to the name of R*. Besides, that doesn't mean that there would be any R* games shown at E3…it just means R* won't be showing it.
Holy crap! I wanted this game but i wanted mod nation racers more. Deffinitly don't regret that desision though. Well i also have never played red dead redemption but i heard it is great but i just lovvveee mnr so much!
you were right to get modnation first, RDR gets old after 30-40 hours. I thought I was about 15 hours into modnation, checked my stats and realized I had over 35 hours already. Now that makes me feel good, when after 35 hours I feel like I'm just getting started.
I haven't touched RDR in a week and I probably won't until the coop expansion comes out and I can get together with a friend to try it out.
Yeah, tomorrow I'm trading RDR for MNR. I enjoyed the story, and I'll just save me some dime and get me the game that's a keeper for the long run.
Rockstar not showing anything at E3 is a bit weird. Not showing at the biggest gaming event of the year, guess if they're not proud enough of what they are working on to bring it to e3 then I shouldn't worry about what they are doing and should look elsewhere.
Rockstar probably got something bigger coming.
You think maybe they've made enough money to not only be profitable with RDR but to throw their own entertainment expo?
Could be!
well i have bought the collectors edition of gta iv and bioshock 2. so they got 200 of my bucks right there. i havent gotten rdr yet due to money issues. its on the list. im suprised no one is makin a big deal out of the 10 new trophies for rdr. if you compare your trophies with someone elses you can see them.
and does no one play mag any more? sorry if this is off topic a little but they have a huge dlc coming out for $10 and i thought it would have made news more.
i cant wait for E3!!
Just got MAG the other day. Looking forward to lending my talents to one of the factions in the very near future.
dude im on sver. just made level 60 and im gonna go for vet mode back into sver. i have no interest in playing for valor unless it is to screw them over. seriously im gonna start a squad killing squad. need a few more people for it. ha ha. raven is ok. let me know man join my clan and kill with us. 😉
Well that's a downer about E3, I wanted to see both LA Noire and Agent on display.
I have to agree there World!

That doesn't mean someone else can't show it.
Yeah Rockstar doesn't need to show off. Once it's on the shelf it will sell.
Yes, another comment that a whole heartedly agree with, man bear pig 🙂

Nobody should still be "on the fence" about RDR. By no means should you be afraid of the Western theme. The game is quite mature and heavy. This is not your dad's spaghetti western.
Anybody else notice that RDR is releasing at a time when Westerns are starting to crop up, there's a bunch of new B-movie Westerns, plus that Jonah Hex with ol ToeThumbs Megan Fox, what's next Wild Wild West 2?
Ssshuuushhh..they will hear you.
I knew this game would do good. Wow five million sold already.
I love this game it is so much fun, I talked so good of this game I swayed a friend to buy it(on PS3:) I woulnder how many were sold on the PS3 compared to the 360. I think the PS3 sold more.
I don't know what you are talking about kraygen This game is so much fun this game won't get old for a while.
well I played it for just over 35 hours, I've done everything on the single player and multiplayer free roam.
All that is left is multiplayer matches, like team death match and the like, I don't really go for that kind of thing, so yeah, until the expansion comes out there isn't really anything that it offers me.
I think it "SHIPPED 5 MILLION" not SOLD 5 million. If i read it right on scrawl
Edit "Yup, It only shipped 5 million since last month not sold, i just read it again"

the link keeps saying sold.
what link? i never gave a link. Heres the link if u want http://scrawlfx.com/2010/06/red-ded-redemption-ships-five-million-units
The link in the article I meant.
eLLeJuss is correct.
Rockstar have indeed shipped five million copies of 'Red Dead Redemption', but they've sold a little over two million, as of last week.
Obviously, shipped still means money for them, but a lot of people are awfully confused about this game's actual sales.
R* does it again they can do no wrong in my eyes. Even GTA IV which I don't like as much as prior GTA games was fantastic.
@ Mr. Shepard and PSXE
Does that mean Agent isn't in R*'s fiscal year either?

Good for Take-Two. Seriously though, they need to take their time with Bioshock 3. The first was a masterpiece, and from everything I've read, the second was not (haven't played it yet, damn devs and their insistence on story DLC). They need to craft or licence a new engine for the third because the Unreal Engine 2.5 is now 8 years old and showing it.
Also, I think it should be open world. Imagine, Rapture open to all to go anywhere at anytime you want. A thing of beauty.
Anyway,I never expected Agent to release before 2012, I mean, that's the approximate dev time for a GREAT PS3 game, 3-4 years, yes? Unless it's a sequel. RDRedemption is the sickness, I convinced a friend to get it, unfortunately, he's an X-man. He keeps talking about wanting to play ps3 exclusives.
L.A. Noire is going to kick it, and I have a slight interest in Mad Ma- Max Payne 3. I'm always getting that mixed up.
ANYWAY, again, good for Take-Two.
Peace.
well deserved they really did a fantastic job on RDR.
though im really pissed that MP3 is not releasing this year.
i can not believe this, they announce a game and give us no news on it for ages than finally break the silence with a delay, than again give us no info for ages and again break the silence with a delay.
i mean who the hell do R* think they are?
polyphony digital?
Damn I was hoping for a GTA V announcement at E3 now if they aint showing no more new games this news is upsetting 🙁

Dang…I really wanted to see some LA Noire demos. Although they might just allow E3 hype up some games, get some buzz going and then when it dies down come out with their own announcement which will surely generate some excitement….or at least, I'm hoping they do!
On a related RDR note,
Zero Punctuation who's noted for their satirical reviews, just did one for RDR…
