Michael Jordan Soars Again As NBA 2K11 Cover Star

So EA offers up a name change for their NBA Live franchise – it's now the potentially revolutionary NBA Elite 11 – and 2K decides to use a blast from the past.

It has been confirmed that Michael Jordan will land on the cover for NBA 2K11 , scheduled to hit store shelves on October 5. Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports, says they know they "have the best NBA video game out there," so what better way to promote that than by putting Air Jordan on the cover? He also added that "actually getting this done is the most ridiculous win of all-time," which probably isn't an understatement, considering Jordan's legendary status that is now closer to idol than icon. The last time the superstar appeared in a video game was back in 2004 but he's coming back now, and Argent went so far as to say that NBA 2K11 would become "the best selling game in the 10-year history of 2K Sports." As for Jordan, he had this to say:

"It’s an honor to be featured on the cover of NBA 2K11. I have no doubt that NBA 2K11 will be a big hit with gamers and basketball fans alike. I’m looking forward to getting back out on the court, virtually."

2K is really pushing it, aren't they? They just gave away $1 million to the winner of their "pitch a perfect game" contest with MLB 2K10 and now, they just scored the guy commonly perceived to be the greatest basketball player of all time for their NBA 2K11 cover. Oh, and by the way, they've got Wayne Gretzky for the cover of NHL Slapshot for the Wii. What's next?  Oh, and if you're wondering, yes…Jordan is indeed playable in the game.

The most game I enjoyed playing with Michael Jordan in it is Space Jam! 😛

Jordan is in my earliest basketball memories. ^.^ My dad was a Bulls fan because of him. After his retirement, however, we moved on to the, new at the time, Toronto Raptors (est. 1996).

Anyone else remember Jordan dunking while jumping OVER the massive Patrick Ewing? Look it up on youtube. One of the top dunks of all time.

How can I forget that? It was in the Garden too!

I remember the 3-peat years in the 90s; I've lived in Chicagoland most of my life. Those were good times and good playoffs.

yeah, they were good times. I grew up in Nova Scotia, and the nearest pro-sports team for basketball was a good 20+ hours away. At least for hockey we -HAD- the Nordiques at just under 10 hours away. Anyways, Chicago was just a fun team to cheer for when there's nothing geographically close. Admittedly, we now go for Toronto since they're at least in the country, and Jordan's long gone.

For some reason, I still just cannot get into any sports games, not a single one.

Let's hope that 2K11 isn't as buggy as 2K10.

I never get into sports games, but there's no denying that they are making some very good looking ones this generation. Them spending the money for Jordan makes me look forward to seeing what they have on their hands.

I'm a basketball fan, I don't know why I haven't played a b-ball game for a long time. MJ was a great player no doubt but I believe Dr. J was better (if u had them both in the NBA in the same years).

All relative and impossible to compare. That's like saying if Rocket Richard had played with Wayne Gretzky… both top notch in their own time. To give you an idea, Sport History doesn't even attempt to answer those questions of best in history. Just sportscasters start those comparisons.

It's all about personal preference. I have Jordan on the top of my list.

The one thing that can't be disputed is that both "Dr. J" and "Air Jordan" were NBA GREATS!!

If EA was smart I would put LeBron James d-ing up Kobe or the other way around on the cover of NBA Elite much like they did with Madden 10 cover with Troy P(not even going to try to spell his last name) and Larry Fitzgerald.

Jordan is the kind of phenom that will make me want to play a basketball game, even if I'm not that into basketball. When it comes to the sport, he might as well be a superhero.

MJ is playable?
Does that mean 2K Sports licensed his name?
Cause for the past 10 years of playing Live I never see his name.

And now that 2K11 has MJ in it……..

Hi:

Oh, Michael "Air" Jordan. That's an excellent "Advertising" move. People who had the HONOR to watch him knows that HE is the BEST of the BEST. The last time I remember playing a game with his name, it was NBA Street (one or 2, I don't remember), I think and it was an Excellent game too, by the way.

I've always fared well in the 2k series but the NBA Elite series if it delivers on what it's promising sounds way more intriguing at the moment.

way to post week old news headlines, but aside from that – Hopefully they release a game without as many issues as 2k9 and 2k10. Those games were horrendous. before that each game was better then the last and had minimal glitches. 2k10 had so many glitches on the xbox vversion it was not even funny. then i bought a ps3 and it was even worse (The glitches pertained mostly to My Player mode and online play). to this day, Team Up mode still does not work properly and the feature was introduced in 2k9 lol.

hopefully mike wong will help them get their stuff together and the MJ on the cover is not just a ploy to make sales on a dying franchise.

the basketball game i enjoyed the most is the NBA Street Vol. 2 on ps2 where you have the MJ wearing the red genuine Bull uniform. I love that game the most among all NBA video games.
