Metal Gear Solid Movie Stalls, Revival Remains Possible

Now that the "Prince of Persia" movie has released, and we know the likes of a new "Hitman" is on the way, we're all starting to wonder: whatever happened to that "Metal Gear Solid" film?

Well, the MTV Movies Blog had a chance to ask the voice of Snake himself for an update. David Hayter was rumored to have been tapped to help write the screenplay for the movie adaptation, and in fact, he admits to being asked. He said in reply that he "can say without contradiction that I know it better than any screenwriter on the planet." So at that point, they submitted a script and things started moving along. But since then, updates have stopped and Hayter says the deal isn't done yet:

"…I don’t believe they were ever able to successfully close a deal between Mr. Kojima and Sony. This is all just stuff I’ve heard."

Hayter says he did "come up with a pitch for the movie which I thought was pretty cool and I would still love to do." But as of right now, there are "far larger issues" at hand, and one of them is determining the level of involvement series creator Hideo Kojima will have. Right now, nothing seems to be happening but Hayter believes the concept could be revived:

"I really want to spring some things on people. Having been intimately involved with ‘Metal Gear,’ I would like to give people a story that will grab the fans. The fans will know the context that we’re talking about once they see the trailers. They’ll say ‘Oh my god, they’re going there.’ But they won’t quite know how the story is going to unfold or what some of the big surprises are going to be. And that’s really the only way to keep a movie [adaptation] interesting."

Please don't let this movie happen without Kojima. We saw how that turned out last time.

i agree. since kojima being a perfectionist and its is his project, there may be a good chance that a metal gear movie would be decent. I still prefer that it doesnt happen at all. same with uncharted, i mean, hasnt hollywood ruined enough games as it is? why not get videogame people make videogame movies? Maybe kojima believed that the movie was crap and thats why they couldnt close the deal.

u called it john. Kojima wasn't impressed with the budget which was offered up to make it and just flat out declined it. It is now stalled because Kojima doesn't want it made.

Hayter is just being a wishful thinker.

i dont know about everyone else but i'm taking this as good news. We all know that even when hollywood is given everything, story and all that, they still find that one way to make the movie adaptation craptacular.

Next one on line for stalling/cancelation of movie is uncharted.

As long as the story is solid and the casting is good, it could be a fantastic movie.

And the fans here know this can only happen with Kojima and Hayter on board to write and script it.

Special fancy effects just don't cut it anymore. Prince of Persia and Transformers 2 proved that. The audience isn't dumb you know.

At the very least give us an anime movie.

Actually I think it would probably be better if they went the animated route.

A MGS movie would probably get me out of the house. My greatest fear would be a big disappointing movie. I'm sure Hollywood doesn't have the talent to bring MGS to the screen properly.

So, are they attempting to adapt the first 'Solid', or is it just supposed to be a film that takes place in the 'Metal Gear' universe?

I agree with johnld. There is real potential for disaster.

Oh, if only the bigwigs in Hollywood would grow a damn brain. How long will it take for them to learn that they need to come up with their own ideas. By all means, make a Metal Gear movie, but as Jalex said, set it in the universe and not base it on one of the games, or only have it tie into the games. That way, there is less of a chance of it disappointing as it is an entirely new story.
Peace.

I was discussing this prospect the other day with a friend, and we came to the conclusion that an MGS movie would have to be masterfully crafted(obviously,) to be the first game movie done truly right. One of my ideas is instead of having it be something of a franchise make it a long movie, and have it be Old Snake having flashbacks to his prior adventures right before he lands on Outer Haven. As in remembering all the important events that led up to that point, while on the sling shot launcher thing, and then ending the movie (as in a nice hour worth of ending) with the microwave, and final fight with Ocelot etc… This will never happen and the regular movie goer would be baffled but that's how I would love to see it, if it even happens. If it turns out to be a complete wash, amongst the annals of other crappy game movies, well it's a disservice to one of (if not the best) franchises in gaming. MGS fanboy rant over.

i really dont want this to happen, i mean no one can give tribute to the great solid snake.
any movie, no matter how good would just be a insult, so dont bother!
same goes with uncharted or GOW i love those series far too much to see them shat on by hollywood.
have they not destroyed enough game series? cough mortal kombat, cough prince of persia, cough transformers 2.

its really really really really hard to get any adaptation of any of the metal gear games into a one singles movie
there is a lot of written conversations to explain the plot that cant be fitted into a 3 hours movie
thats without mentioning the action part of the game
i cant see that there will be a successful adaptation of the game because the game is a movie by its own
please dont destroy the legacy of metal gear by a poorly adapted movie

Personally, I don't want this film to be made without Hideo Kojima's blessing. I'm a huge Metal Gear nut and I do NOT want this film without Kojima wanting it as well. That being said, though, I don't think Kojima should be given too much creative control over the film's script. It'd be nice to see him as a producer and consultant but as far as the story goes, I think it'd be best to let David Hayter take the reigns.

The reason I say this is because while I absolutely LOVE and ADORE the story behind the MGS games, I don't know if the general audience would be able to enjoy it and/or understand it. Kojima's ideas are so far out there and overly brilliant that it may be too much for the regular movie viewer to comprehend.

Hayter, on the other hand, is an established Hollywood screenwriter and someone who's been attached and around the MGS universe for over a decade now. Being the voice of Snake, he knows everything about everything when it comes to the MGS storyline. He has the perfect blend of skills to make Metal Gear Solid the most incredible game-to-film adaptation in history.

I'd like to see Hayter nail out a script, take it to Kojima, get the nod and the "good luck" and then go make the film. That's how you make an amazing Metal Gear Solid film and I hope that's how the film distributor lets it go down.

If Koj is not involved it'll be another failed game to movie adaptation. I really want to see this done properly.

Don't get me wrong if they didn't make a movie I feel the series would be better off due to the overall lack of quality these movies tend to have. If they do make a movie however it has to be done completely right, with Kojima on board.

Definitly agree that Kojima needs to be involved in the project. As my forte' is film, I would definitely like to see this done, but it has to be done right for it to get the audience it's aimed at and if it isn't it will prob. bomb
