Ben-DutkaSo the PlayStation 3 is already capable of producing 3D visuals in our games, but what about Blu-Ray movies?
Well, that has to come in a separate firmware update but thankfully, we shouldn't have to wait too long. As reported by Andriasang , Sony says the necessary update for 3D movie-viewing will be here "by the end of the year." They also clarified that update 3.30, which added 3D functionality for gaming, did not encompass movies, which may have confused some owners. We don't have an exact date but it seems the 3D film patch won't be in place before the first 3D Blu-Ray movies hit store shelves; the first – including "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" – will be out later this summer. Therefore, if you happen to have a 3D-enabled HDTV, don't be surprised if your new 3D Blu-Ray movie doesn't work just yet; you gotta wait for that firmware update. Lastly, it has been revealed that the first 3D games will be available in just a few weeks time (June 10 is the date we've heard), so at least you can revel in that new bit of technology, provided you have the means. By the way, the first 3D HDTVs are already available; Samsung has their line out and Sony will release their 3D Bravias this month.
It helps to have the distinction, though. Update 3.30 was only for 3D gaming, not for seeing Blu-Ray movies in 3D…just so ya know.

Many movies are getting 3D and MOST aren't necessary especially Cloudy Meatball……..
And many people are jumping on the bandwagon, my friends were like, "LOOK AVATAR IN 3D, ALICE IN WONDERLAND 3D", that's the sad thing……
I watched Avatar in the normal section while ALL but a few of my friends went to the 3D section.
They came out with a 'meh' face, and I spend 3 times less for a standard view instead of 3D.

No WorldEnds, Avatar was not 'meh' it was utter rubbish. It was an all-time low for the movie industry.
But it was still pretty 😛
And I saw it in both 3D and regular. I can tell you that IMAX 3D extrem bass surround sound makes a difference compared to regular smaller presentations.
And the 3D was nicely incorporated though as the movie goes you tend to forget about it lol. But at the start of the movie 3D really makes for a nice experience. It is just another way to try and make you feel as if you were REALLY there. It is a given some people won't like it but I still like the incorporation for some movies 😀 I'D give avatar 5/10 for story but 10/10 for visuals and it was worth seeing in 3D for me.
maybe i'm the only one, but i actually thought avatar was kinda cool…
of course, i also liked Crystal Skull, and i watch comedies. pretty sure i'm no roger ebert.
I hate reading these articles. To think that Sony is wasting its time making 3D firmwares instead of the updates that the user base actually want is frustrating to say the least.
Stop hating so much. Damn prejudice people up there in the 51st state. :p
At least it isn't as big a distraction as 360 kids have with their particular God (Microsoft) spending all their time and effort on Natal instead of making games.

Every 10 years or so, the theaters put out a couple of 3D movies and then they go away.
I'm afraid this is going to happen here. Sounds like an awesome idea but ultimately will not go mainstream.
Nice, The PS3 will be the only truly HD console and the only 3D console. What next? Matter replication? Matter transference?
Sorry, I think that it's clear that Sony is by far the console maker that has added the most value through additional features in firmware to their console.
Yes I'm aware of Linux and PS2 compatibility. PS2 compatibility was a hardware change, and Linux was removed thanks to a slightly immature man-boy hacker and egomaniac. Even so, the number of additional features that Sony has brought through firmware is astonishing.
In my view they have actually taken away value by removing my ability to use Linux. I have to now buy a second computer. I bought the PS3 because of its gaming heritage and the ability to use Linux so I didn't have to double up on computing hardware…
Again, as in most things Highlander, it really depends from which side of the fence one sits on. It was a mistake for Sony to go down this road in the first place, they should have just stuck to their gaming pedigree and not permit the ability to use the PS3 as a hobbled computer of sorts… I am sure there must have been a lot of head scratching and some blaming going on in those heated corporate meeting rooms…
The 3D may be good in the long run, but I get the sense that everything is being rushed out… as if these corporate giants have to find any excuse to make, create (and even – reluctantly so) share markets to continue driving things forward. I do understand this has to be done, but I hope it is not being done on the cheap, and that people who invest now, will realise they should have waited for the "real deal" so to speak; meaning a better evolved 3D product that works and looks better than this first release… I will step into the ring with this one… maybe 2 to 3 years from now… I am in no rush what's so ever…
In fact, I would rather wait until the next round of console hardware, because I think that this is the "real next generation" power we were waiting for this time around. Powerful as the PS3 is, I think the next generation will be the best… Just look at what NVidia's Fermi can achieve now… with real time tessellation and the like, where will we be in 5 years… so for me the next generation will encompass everything I had hoped for this generation… because you can see the trends now…

As I said, the number of features added through firmware is astonishing. That doesn't alter the removal of Linux of course, and neither does the removal of Linux alter the other additional features. I recognize that. But, this discussion is not about OtherOS or Linux.
I think I mentioned this on a previous 3D related article, all of this reminds me of the PS2. A bit late in the consoles cycle they added the network adaptor while everyone (On Playstation consoles at least) were fine and used to single player. Now, right out of the gate, the Playstation Network is imo, the most important feature of the PS3. Adding 3D now might give people a taste, but ultimately might take yet another Playstation before people grab hold of this new (old?) technology. Not quite the same as adding online capabilities, but reminded me of that.
Yes, I do understand what you are saying; but I thought it would be valid to raise that because quite a few people have been affected by that sweeping policy, and, which ever way you do look at it, functionality has been lost rather than gained.
Firmware updates coming up should no doubt continue to enhance the Game Os experience further, but some of us have been hurt by Sony's actions. This does not mean we don't like Sony, or appreciate what they have done and still doing for the gaming industry… what it does illustrate however, is the power large corporates have over us. Once you buy into their products it can become a populist trap… just look at Apple users… 🙂

I know it's of no comformt to those affected by the removal of OtherOS, but I remain absolutely convinced that Sony's move was the best action they could take to safeguard the continued security not only of the PS3 and it's firmware, but also the PSN itself.
As a IT pro and some time security specialist, I know that all it takes is a single insignificant breach of security. Very smart and devious people have a habit of finding other exploits using the initial breach as a beach-head. The hack that was shown was hardly practical for all, but what's to say that the crack could not have been widened? PSN hosts financial transactions and information. Sony has to do everything at it's disposal to protect that.
That said, I'm not at all happy that they felt that they had to remove OtherOS functionality. However, the source of the problem is not Sony, it's the ego of a hacker who found a tiny exploit and went public in a blaze of glory. His actions precipitated the action Sony took. His continued challenge to Sony's security represented a threat that had to be countered.
So, no I'm not happy with Sony's action, but I understand and appreciate them. I am however very angry at the moron who spoiled the party for those using Linux just for his own petty gains of publicity and ego-stroking.
I honestly think the 3D aspect is just being pushed to quickly, dont' get me wrong expanding in technology is great but some people just started to afford a big screen LCD like myself, which I had been saving for awhile for my sony bravia 42 inch.
my wallet can't take new techology right now.

hey, upgrade the web browser. PLEASE. apple phones and some others aren't downgraded versions of the web. wouldn't it be cool to burn, download movies, tv shows, watch tv shows with the latest flash upgrade and not have it freeze up on you or say that it's incapable of performing an act because it's inferior to an actual computer's web browser? lok, there's already talk about a premium service. and upgrading the web browser isn't on there to do list? for example, i listen to recorded music on the ps3, and surf the web, and sometimes it freezes up on me. it's
a pain. i'm just saying. what say you?
This is a big issue for me… the web browser falls real short of what it should be able to do. Part of this problem is due to the lack of ram in the machine.
