If you want a ton of behind-the-scenes info on the newly announced Killzone 3 project, you really need to check out this Eurogamer interview .
In it, Guerrilla boss Steven Ter Heide spoke about the new enhancements and alterations we'll find in the third installment, and even what the team regrets doing in KZ2. There was very little wrong with the latter, of course, but a team can always make improvements, right? And you may remember an awful lot of swearing going on in KZ2; it wasn't as bad as in other titles, but it did have a hint of the not-so-subtle message, "gaming is for mature people! Really!" This happens every now and then. Designers feel the need to put an overabundance of "mature" content into a game, if only to prove that games aren't for kids anymore. But Guerrilla has noticed this and they're not about to make the same mistake twice; said Ter Heide:
"Our sound director is here today, we said to him, ‘go through the entire database, and anything that’s got ’sh**’ or ‘f***’ in it, just get rid of it, we don’t want to hear it ever again!"
He admits the dialogue should never be "gratuitous" but should focus on advancing the storyline and characters; something that goes beyond grit and filth and really provides the gamer with a truly adult plot. Of course, the game will still be rated "M" for Mature but Ter Heide says that has to do more with violence; there's a new "brutal melee system," for instance. But as for the dialogue:
"…we feel that the dialogue which is in there shouldn’t be gratuitous. It should be about advancing the story, natural responses. It shouldn’t be this sort of off the scale swearing. We’ve toned it down a little bit to make sure that the story comes across in the way we wanted it to come across. That’s definitely one of the points we took on board from Killzone 2."
It's good to hear that Guerrilla is listening to the fans in order to make the best game possible. Warms my heart. 🙂
OT: I just heard that Gary Coleman died. Lets all have a moment of silence………
He died by falling down.
Apparently he had some kind of brain hemorrhage. The Dif'rent Stroke curse continues. RIP Gary.
Thank God. The language was really annoying because I couldn't blast the amazing soundtrack when people were around. Sometimes sh!t is ok to use but not in every other sentence.
I useda know a guy who was even worse that Rico, just talking about his day or what he was up to he would literally be like: "Oh man, I effing woke up late and the effing traffic made me late to work so my effing boss got on my effing case so I gotta pull some effing night shifts and I can't effing hang this weekend man… sh*t."
Not a fan of people who make swears just as or more prevalent than their vocabulary
are you sure? i seriously heard rico say this one time.
"Where the FUCK is Garza when you need him? FUCK this! SHIT!"
all in 3 sentences
No one complains when gears of war says that stuff…just sayin'
the #1 drawback of killzone 2 was the characters and them using the vocabulary of 8th graders learning 2 cuss. if we had a script like uc2 or bc1 in killzone 2, it could've been exceptionally better.
if gg puts a great script and coop in killzone 3, then the game can achieve perfection.
I didnt find it bad at all its just a game! I like how they are down playing the use of swear words but are cranking up the violence,so now you can stab a guy in the face.
Now people will say KZ3 has to much violence.
That's fine, the title is Killzone after-all..
The more I hear about KZ3 the more I get pumped, definitely too long of a wait :'( but, w.e. I know it will be worth it in the end.
i really dont see the problem i think it adds to the atmosphere of the game, they are after all at war and swearing just demonstrates the emotions and stress the characters are going through.
i love the "ahh, nows not the time sir!" remark just after the first atak comes storming in that made me piss myself laughing!!!
"but it did have a hint of the not-so-subtle message, 'gaming is for mature people! Really!'"
Ironically, I find that adding a bunch of gratuitous F-words actually says 'gaming is for teenage boys! Really!'.
if you're not cursing in a war….there is something wrong lol
It's funny how people can get offended and even upset over words, I mean you are playing a game where you are blowing people's heads off; and the f-word offends you? Silly oxy-moronic people, words are for kids… say what ever you want, if i were in war, i'd be f-ing all the f*cking time…
I don't think you know what an oxymoron is.
I like to think the hero's in the games I play are somehow more special than your average militant. Otherwise, what's so special about them?
Id00….
Hell, I find your user-name much more offensive than I would towards any f*cking cursing.

This is fantastic news! The game play was great but the dialog was enough to make me want to cheese grate my ears shut. I almost at times wanted to play it in a different language just so I could not understand all the profanity. Im glad to see they will begin to follow the same standards for quality (in all areas) that the rest of Sony's first party umbrella has. Now if only the rest of the industry would follow suit. Profanity does not equal maturity.
Best use of an M rating so far for me was Heavy Rain. It always remained tasteful, never pandered for a mature rating it was an M due to mature subject matter. More M rated games (and many R rated movies) should follow suit and get a rating like this because of it's subject matter not just because of gratuitous violence, nudity, and language. P.S. I loved KZ2.
