Rumor: Sega To Announce Shenmue III As A PS3 Exclusive

'sigh' When the real news tails off for the weekend, rumors and speculation typically takes its place. Forgive us.

Anyway, fans of the Shenmue titles for the Sega Dreamcast have long since hoped for a revival on a PlayStation platform. For a while, it was believed that Shenmue III would indeed show up on the PS3 but there was never any concrete evidence of such a project. However, you can't keep a good rumor down: as noted by Right-n-Real citing Spanish website Meristation, the long-awaited third installment is very real, and Sega will actually unveil it at E3 next month as a huge PS3 exclusive. Apparently, this is the game for which Sega signed their license extension for the Unreal Engine. The teasing text:

"He shall come from a far eastern land across the sea. A young man who has yet to know his potential. This potential is a power that could either destroy him or realize his will. His courage shall determine his fate. The path he must traversed brought with adversity. I await whilst praying, for this destiny predetermined since ancient times. Awaiting in anticipation. A dragon emerges from the earth as ominous clouds fill the sky. A phoenix descends from the heavens trailing purple from its wings. The pitch-black night unfolds with the morning star as its only light. And thus, the saga begins…"

Well, that's all very poetic but it doesn't exactly confirm anything. However, we've been looking at a number of possible PS3 exclusive announcements at E3 next month, and if Shenmue III is indeed one of them, that's going to make one hell of a big splash. In the meantime, if you wish to play something similar go pick up Yakuza 3 . It's worth your time.

What kind of game Shenmue was?
Was it the Japan's GTA?

No, it's kind of an RPG. It's about immersion, QTE's, some fighting, and a lot of detective kind of work.

LOL I find funny how people say that about the Yakuza games, but come on! Shenmue gonna have the curse of…''its like japanese gta?'' too?

Funny thing its that those games are more rpg than FFXIII.

You just made my day. I was hoping the big Sega announcement would be Shenmue 3 or Streets or Rage 4.

I've never play Shenmue before because I think it was on Sega Saturn and Dreamcast? I'm not sure… but I heard good things about them so if it's indeed a PS3 exclusive I'll be very excited for sure. It should be quite a game now it's on PS3.

Wow I was speculating about this in the forums recently. I loved the first one on Dreamcast, I didn't start the second until way later and the graphics and poor voice acting were nolonger groundbreaking so I never finished it.

Part of me hopes they keep that bad voice acting:

Amongst my friend I can only relate on Shenmue with one dude, and he does great impressions of the voice acting.

You know, I love Shenmue. Played the first one on the DC and the second on the Xbox. I really want to see some closure on the story of Ryo Hazuki and Lan Di. However, I'm not going to believe it until I see it.

unfortunately a third wouldn't be any closure, the thing was slated for like a million episodes, I actually forget how many.

@World: Unfortunately you are misinformed. Shenmue has been planned as a trilogy since the start.

They said it would be 15 Chapters. The first game was Chapter 1 and the second game was 2-4.

Yeah but they planned on getting everything done in 3 games

What the hell is Shenmue? A Japanese adventure game? Yikes. If they're killing Japanese RPGs I wonder what they'll do to the adventure games.

Why don't you people know about Shenmue!?

aaronisbla

because Dreamcast didn't catch on like Sega hoped, therefore killing any interest one may have had for the second game since they didnt play the first

What the hell is a Dreamcast?

Alright, just kidding. At the time it was all PC gaming for me. For some reason buying a $200 graphics card made more sense to me than buying a $200 console. I know, weird huh?

Oh yeah and Ben if Shenmue 3 is indeed announced I can pretty much guarantee it'll be a 360 exclusive. Either way its still a D1B for me!!!

I heard great things about this game, yet I know nothing about it. i heard it sold horribly cause it was on dreamcast and xbox. I heard people comparing it to Heavy Rain.

Whatever kind of game it is, Sega did not disappoint me this generation at all. I will look forward to this game.

It's amazing, it really is kind of a simulation of the characters life in some ways. It's not so much about the fighting though there is some as it is about uncovering the circumstanced of the main characters father's death. I literally would spend a lot of time at vending machines and getting nice little Sonic figurines.

It would be nice if they packed in 1 & 2 with it.

I wouldn't mind that idea of including the first two. I always wanted to play the first one when I was young but didn't have a Dreamcast.

Long live Dreamcast! It's still handy dandy for emulating NES, Master System, and Genesis. The SNES emulator has never worked 100% though. Good thing I have an xbox1 for that.

This would be a great move for Sega

By the way, it wouldn't be a great idea to make it a 360 exclusive since you'd be cutting off Japan (where it will probably sell the most) and most of Europe

And if it's true, they better package the first two games in it

Hitch

Yeah but they already stated the only way they'll make it is if they get the funding from one of the big 3 and it would be exclusive.

Sony doesn't really do that but guess who does…

Come on Hitch, you honestly think Microsoft gives a rat's ass about Shenmue? MS pays big bucks for big games.

Maybe this only means they are bringing 1&2 to the PSN like Sega was talking about doing with old DC games. I bet if they did it with Sonic Adventure 1&2 they would sell well.

Extacly what i was thinking, i would certainly buy tem both and the third game. I really hope they do this i played thefirst one last week and it was such a thril. Its a game that NEEDS a conclusion and if they actually give us it, i would be very happy lets just say that.

I'm curious to why it would be a PS3 exclusive though. Shenmue II was re-released on the XBOX1 not the PS2.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

Well it's because Sega is on record saying that Shenmue III would be a spendy endeavor and they would only do it if one side or the other paid them for exclusivity.

There was no rumor in 2008 about Shenmue III being at E3 2010.

There is no rumor about 2010. I looked all over the Spanish site referenced and there is a rumor from 2008 about Shenmue/Unreal Engine being at E3 2008. Didn't happen.

For some reason I'm guessing the article linked here saw that and did not see the date.
