Valve: We “Routinely Evaluate” Making Games On Other Platforms

Many gamers – especially PlayStation 3 owners – view Valve boss Gabe Newell as an egotistical, PC-biased, PS3 hater. …well, even if the first two are accurate (and we're not saying they are), the third might be stretching the truth.

Over the past few years, it has become abundantly clear that Valve doesn't want anything to do with Sony's console, and many have attributed this to laziness on the part of the developer; i.e., the Xbox 360 is very similar to a PC, so it's no real trouble getting one of their games to run on that platform. The PS3, on the other hand… But in speaking to online broadcaster 5by5 , Newell defends the studio's stance and says the entire situation is a bit more complex. While he won't say the team is working on any PS3 games right now, he does admit that "there are a lot of interesting things about the PS3," and he can't ignore the number of Steam users who now own Sony's platform. He adds that the plan to produce games for other platforms/consoles is something the studio "routinely evaluates" and they want to do what's "best for their customers." Said Newell:

There are a lot of issues – It would be hard to explain how we make decisions on [which platforms to develop for]. Where are our iPhone games? Where are our iPad games, why don’t we ship anything on the DS, why don’t we ship anything on the PSP? Why don’t we invest in microtransactions, why don’t we have any Flash-based and casual kinds of games? That sort of analysis is something we look at all the time. What are the trade-offs, what are the opportunity costs, how do we leverage work in one area to benefit work in other areas?"

As to the idea that Valve is biased against the PS3, Newell denied this by saying they're "super agnostic." This is all very well and good, but has anyone noticed that all he ever talks about is "his customers?" While the rest of the gaming world is doing everything they can to continually expand their targeted demographic, to always cater to larger and larger groups of gamers, this guy only talks about satisfying their fans. …that's only half the equation there, chief. You need to keep creating new fans, purely for the business angle of things and the only reason you wouldn't want to do that is because…um…maybe you're still biased and you want to keep your fans in your little "exclusive group?"

It's just a theory. For our part, we really don't care if Valve does or doesn't develop for the PS3; if they do, fine. But the rate at which they release titles and considering what we've seen from PS3 exclusives…eh, we'll live.

LOL!

I don't think MS let him use Steam on their 360 platform. XBL is a closed system…

True, but MS does allow them to use Steam with Windows PC's. Which could be the reason MS gets support from Valve on the Xbox. If Sony had their own Mass PC OS Valve would probably jump on the Sony's bandwagon fairly quick. Valve most likely would be all about the PS3 if Sony agreed to put a Steam app. on the platform. Which I believe is what Gabe truly wants.

around the ps3 launch,he flat out said the ps3 was a piece of junk.and said that sony needs to trash the ps3 an start over.he gave no real explanation then.now that the ps3 is selling (great i might add)your trying to give more sensible answers to why your not making games for the ps3.by the end of this year, there will be over 40million ps3 owners out there.he's probably thinking (momma always told me,don't count chickens b4 they hatch).

What is wrong with this person, they should just ban him from developing for the Playstation for all he has said, any game these people would bring out could have some kind of chip killing virus in it.

Though Square Enix should do one thing Valve does, DEVELOP GAMES FOR YOUR FANS!!!

They chose to Develop for the Mac instead of the PS3. I cannot take Valve seriously, even after the next 8 years while I wait for HL2 Episode 3, they have burnt a bridge they won't cross, ever again.

The L4D series is the most daft and mindless game i've ever played, so i really dont care if they rehash it every year for the 360. I just want Portal 2 for PC. They can di** around with everything else for all i care.

So true.

Portal was the only huge revolutionary game for FPS junkies who needed something more than a person or alien to shoot.

Out of all the games in the orange box, Portal was by far the best one. And it wasn't even made by a person at Valve, they just bought it and published it!!! LOL!!!!

ps3 have proven for the last year to be the device with the biggest growth momentum among others ,if i were in valve shoe's id review my old statements also
but still who cares
ps3 have shown all other consoles that its has its perfect own collection of games thats is not available on any other console
Valve ,im sorry to say that but the ps3 dosent need u any more even do most ps3 players

Hey Valve Math geniouses, once you take out the 360's and PS3's that failed, there are actually MORE PS3 owners than 360 owners.

So doesn't it make more sense to develop on the PS3 than 360?

No, because I'm Gabe Newell, I make games, and I hate the PS3.

You got it all wrong…
You see Gabe wastes most of his money on food…
If he developed for the ps3 as well he'd have more money to spend and eventually die from a heart attack…

So it's not a matter of buisness but a matter of personal health…
I mean for every other company going multiplat seems to be a no brainer…
😛

Hehe, I gotta laugh. With Final Fantasy you guys got mad for them trying to reach a wider audience. With Valve you guys go mad for focusing on their fans. You praise platform exclusive development and claim that multi platform titles can never be as good, yet slander Valve for sticking to one platform, shouting "you don't know how much money you loose from THAT!"… 😀

WorldEndsWithMe

lose, "loose" is for like loose change. And it's one thing to be exclusive, it's a whole nother thing to destroy a gaming franchise.

Square Enix ruined FF trying to reach a wider audience, like Underdog015 said in his FFXIII review, they failed to impress the western audience and pissed off the original fans.

Now I'm a Gabe Newell hater not because he doesn't make games on PS3, but because of the comments he made a few years back.

But if you point is saying that the Newell hate here is because he only focus on one platform yet Valve isn't a first party studio then I agree with you.

But then again, Valve is just lazy to put more efforts into the PS3.

@ Beamboom,

You got it all wrong, mate.

With FF XIII, quality was compromised because of the transfer to 360. And we are not mad at Valve for staying true to its fans, heck, we applaud it.
We are mad at Valve and particularly Gabe Newell for the slander and comments made bashing the PS3 and it's technical abilities, and also for not even TRYING to make games for the PS3 or even learn its architecture. Hence, why we call them lazy, cos they don't even try!!!

PS3 exclusive developers focus on quality and pushing the PS3 to its limits. They choose the PS3 because it's the only machine that can deliver on their vision, not because they are too lazy or have no idea how to work with other consoles.

Valve games don't push anything really from a technical standpoint. They remain exclusive because they DON'T know how to work PS3 hardware and can't be bothered to.

I honestly think that PS3 gamers are spoiled with Sony exclusives, and the only big game Valve has to offer that would do well on PS3 as well as 360 and PC is Portal 2.

Portal 2 requires brains, something PS3 players prefer in games with the likes of Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain.

L4D does well on 360 cos its players prefer party shooters, timing and luck over good strategy. I believe it would not fair well on PS3 simply cos PS3 players have higher expectations of games ever since we played all those exclusives over the last year.

Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, God of War III, Littlebig Planet, Modnation Racers, Killzone 2, Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo 5 (Man Furismo Jive), inFamous, The Last Guardian, MLB 10: The Show, Motorstorm, Ratchet and Clank, Resistence 2, Socom 4, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 3, and Wipeout.

AND THOSE ARE JUST THE EXCLUSIVES!!!! (Thank you Wikipedia for the list of exclusives. Go ahead and compare 360's to PS3's. 360 has more, but PS3 has higher rated)

Yep, PS3 players really are spoiled for choice. I think we'll get by without a Valve game, don't you PSXextreme?

I know some people over at Kotaku said people shouldn't keep asking "Noobiewell" about developing games for PS3, because it's same BS from him over and over again. I said it before, I don't care if Valve ever make games for PS3, because anyone who don't want to make games for PS3, I just don't play them. No Halo for PS3? it's okay, no Gears? no problem, no Mass Effects? fine by me. The bottomline is this, people like him can hate PS3 all they want, but they are the ones missing out.

Dancemachine55
Dancemachine55

So true, but unfortunately you're missing out on Gears and Mass Effect too.

Wait, Mass Effect is on PC. So you're just missing out on Halo Reach, Gears 3, Fable 3 and Crackdown 2.

For what the PS3 has to offer, I can get by without needing those games.

Since I do have a 360 as well, I'll definitely be getting Gears of War 3. The first 2 were a blast to play. Fable 3… maybe, if there's time between Sony exclusives. I'll be skipping Crackdown 2.

Got a preorder on Halo Reach tho. That game is amazingly fun now that it's a little different from the first 3 Halos. And about damn time they changed it up a bit, I must add. Halo 3 was just Halo 1 and 2 with better graphics. REALLY!!! No difference!!!!

I hate Gabe as much as any Gabe hater, but I sadly have to agree with you.
I love Portal and Team Fortress 2. Was never a fan of Half-Life or Left 4 Dead.
I do have to admit, that when I am super bored, and just not feeling like turning the PS3 on, killing zombies in Left 4 Dead 2 just kind of fits the mood. Not because the game is the best game ever created, or because the graphics will make my inner gamer cry. No. It's because it's mindless, it's time consuming, point and click action. It's because it reflects real life in no way, and the game just makes me feel like a gamer.
Uncharted 2, although I've never played it (I know, I've missed a lot, but money's tight right now) is a realistic game, designed to focus on graphics and realism rather than pure fun. (Realistic guns, sounds, etc). L4D2 makes me feel like I'm playing an arcade game, such as Super Mario Brothers. SMB is in no way realistic, with floating bricks, etc. That's my view on what a true 'video-game' is supposed to be. Valve somehow just makes me feel like that. Like they can recreate the feeling I had when I played my first video game.
To me, the games they create are like playing a classic arcade game in a 3D world.

Wow, I'm getting very emotional..
Before someone says "Don't compare Uncharted to Valve" I'd like to say that it was just an example.

Also, don't get me wrong. I know what I said above may make me look like some kind of Xbot, or what ever they're called, but I am not. I honestly am not a fanboy to any platform. (Meaning I like every platform including the PS3, Xbox, PC and Wii)

Edit: I see a ad that wondered away from the ad-spot.

Huh? Valve? Oh, you mean those Half Life guys? I already got a PC like everyone else in the world.

What? Left 4 Dead is coming to PS3? It wasn't that great on PC, so why should I bother with it again?

@Mavfan321:
I agree, but for the wrong reasons.
I love Left 4 Dead, but at the same time, I hate it.
It's a love – hate relationship.
See, in my mind L4D2 feels and plays like a classic video game, which is what I think video games *should* be.
Um… The feeling, not the game.
It reminds me of what I felt like when I first played a video game. That feeling of amazement, of non-realistic physics, of fun.
And it's the fun that matters right? Who cares who makes the game, or what the game looks like, as long as it's fun. It doesn't even have to contain violence.

I think video games are losing their status. They are becoming a "real-life simulator", instead of a game.
Heavy Rain is an example.
LBP and Mod-Nation: Racers are one of the only *good* games that don't involve realism. MAG, Call Of Duty. Both war simulators.

Valve is too stupid and lazy to make a PS3 game. Just look at old photos of Gabe Newell compared to new photos. Hes too busy stuffing his face to learn the PS3s architecture. Who cares anyways Valves games have sucked for awhile. Look at Left 4 Dead. Its a zombified version of Quake. So have another twinkie Gabe and STFU fatboy. PS3 owners dont need your crap games with shoddy outdated graphics. Whats up with the guy above me trying to sell crap on a game forum. Troll.
