Killzone 2 Grabs First Ivor Novelli Award For Video Games

One of the reasons why we consider Killzone 2 to be the best FPS of the generation thus far is that it featured a nigh-on unparalleled atmosphere. And one of the reasons for that is the excellent, engaging music.

Obviously, we're not the only ones to come away impressed with the score in Guerrilla's masterpiece, as the game has snagged the very first Ivor Novelli Award for Best Original Video Game Score. If you're not familiar, the Ivors are handed out by a British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and the ceremony has been around since 1955. However, this is the first year that video games have played any role in the proceedings, so Killzone 2 's award is the first to be officially awarded by the prestigious UK group. Regarding music in gaming, BASCA director Mark Fishlock said:

"Writing music for games also requires a number of specialist skills compared with conventional film scoring, such as non-linear and multi-layered composition. This is a very exciting development and one which hopefully will be fully embraced by the rapidly growing games world."

Voted on by 2000 members of the Academy and "not directly influenced by record labels, the music press, or the general public," winning an Ivor Novelli Award is clearly something to brag about. In this case, it's Killzone 2 composer Joris de Man who walks away with the prize; his competition consisted of Armin Elsaesser ( Savage Moon: Waldgeist ), and Richard Beddow, Richard Birdsall, Walter Mair, Lorenzo Piggici and Simon Ravn, who handled the composition for Empire: Total War . We should probably remember that this is a UK-based competition so that's why you're not seeing particularly huge titles in the mix (we're assuming).

But anyway, another award for KZ2, so congrats to de Man. It really was a fitting and even epic score.

So… Killzone 2 gets it and Uncharted 2s music score gets what now?

Whatever KZ2 had a decent sound score I guess, among British games.

I'm just glad that somebody picked up on what VGs had to offer in terms of soundtracks and what not.

The audio in this game is second to none

Though Uncharted 2 could challenge this very much
Either way, it's great to see a QUALITY game like KZ2 get this award, loved the whole suspense and atmosphere in this game.

Really loved how the atmosphere in this game always felt right. Awesome game

Somehow I don't really remember the music, but since I don't think my KZ2 save made it to the new Hard Drive I'll hafta go through it again anyway.

I never really noticed the music in KZ2. Probably because i was too busy admiring how awesome the explosions sound in 5.1.

KZ2 wasn't made in the UK (but in europe i know)
but whatever, nice to hear a great game was recognised.
cant say i pay much attention to game music. apart from
MGS4 (it being almost a film, was quite moving)
Uncharted (and the sequel, and it was brilliant)
Burnout Paradise (rock/indie heaven)

I don't know, KZ2's sound effect may be great, but the music doesn't suck me in.
But hey, maybe that's just me.

Yeah but it did suck me in more than FFXII's political/archaic nonsense at the start (EXCLUDING the amazing FF theme). But then it grew on me and became awesome… Which is also what happened on KZ2 haha.

I agree completely! Congrats!

I just replayed Killzone 2 a few days ago and the soundtrack really is awesome!! I've even been humming the intro song for myself these last couple of days 🙂

Definitely one of the best PS3 exclusives so far: Awesome graphics, awesound sound&music, great story, cast & voice acting makes for a very fun game to play, even though it's an FPS shooter (not my favorite genre)
