GameStop Enjoys Best Non-Holiday Quarter Ever

It's what a lot of great games will do for you, regardless of an economy that supposedly remains a little shaky.

According to GameSpot , the biggest game retailer in the world has posted its single biggest non-holiday quarter in the company's history. For the three-month period that ended May 1, GameStop's total revenues hit $2.08 billion, up over 5% from the $1.98 billion it raked during the same period last year; it's the first time the retailer even topped $2 billion in a quarter outside of the standard holiday period. Not surprisingly, the surge was attributed to "spiking new game sales," which were up over 13% in a year-over-year comparison; the likes of Final Fantasy XIII , Battlefield: Bad Company 2 , God of War III , Bioshock 2 , and Pokemon HeartGold (and SoulSilver ) were mentioned as big sellers. We also shouldn't forget Heavy Rain , which was another million-seller. On top of which, GameStop managed to improve their bottom line in the previous quarter, posting a net income of $75.17 million, up nearly 7% from the $70.43 million from last year's period. This is all despite the lagging April and overall, GameStop's outlook is all sorts of rosy: they expect net profits to be up 9-17% for the current quarter and 19-28% for the next quarter.  These numbers oughta make investors happy.

Oh, and let's not forget that what may have been GameStop's final competitor, GameCrazy, is officially gone as of June. So everything is pointed up for the mega-retailer, and I guess there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Preying on the uniformed gamers…

So sad, people really do walk into traps very easily

I remember a number of years ago, I had an interview at EBgames for a summer job while I was still in school. The fact that I had a good knowledge base of games was actually a detriment according to the manager.

Although I see a lot wrong with this particular business model, they wanted someone who could sell any game to someone. They thought if I knew a lot I might actually deter someone from buying a game.

My argument was that the best games stay at higher prices longer for a reason. Wouldn't it be more likely that I would advocate for higher priced games?

Well… whatever. I ended up getting a much higher paying job at a hospital. Better on the resume too.

When I preordered FFXIII so I could get it at midnight, the guy asked if I want to buy the protection for "All 3 discs," I just smiled and said "I'm getting the PS3 version, and no I won't need it."

Years before GameStop moved to my town a friend of mine owned a little video games/anime shop, it was the coolest place to hang out with friends.
He had to close down not to long after Gamestop opened because so many people wanted to save a few dollars buying pre-owned games.
It drove him out of business.

GS, you're making way too much money!

So you need to give me my used games even cheaper!!!!

I refuse to sell my games to them since they turn around a sell it for double the price used that they gave me for it, i sell private now if i want to, i only shop @ small game stores since I can get really good deals from them, or i preorder from futureshop since lately they have had better preorder incentives like making the game 10 bucks cheaper if u preorder 🙂

GS I worked their when it was ebgames for the christmas season I quite after a few weeks couldn't handle retards and fanboys from the employees and customers.

I stopped shopping at Gamestop about last year when I was in the market for a PS3 for my little brother. I came across Play N Trade, right next to my gym (so my 2 favorite businesses are right next to each other) and they were amazing. Excellent customer service, extremely friendly staff, and AMAZING deals.

The only time anyone in gamestop even tried to help me was after I came out of the gym (so I had a little bit of a pump going) and it was a female behind the counter.

I kind of regret how much money I have given them over the years but alas I shall give no more.

O.K. well as if your post wasn't hard enough to read, you spelled "grammar" wrong. Also whats the point of cursing people out for having an opinion? Honestly your negativity does not positively contribute in any sort of way to this discussion or site.

What people are stating are just their own personal experiences with GS. Besides, lets face it, the margin they make on their used games is so unfair and it would take a fool not to see that.

I can't speak on the other stores behalves but DO NOT INSULT AMAZON. Amazon for one rarely ever runs out of titles. They have a giant selection and there have been numerous occasions when gamestop didn't have games because they didn't sell like wild fire (Valkyria Chronicles and Eternal Sonata) and I was able to get them via Amazon which is why I gladly shop there now. Also they have deals a hell of a lot more often than Gamestop IMO

Finally one of the most important qualities you need when you sell things are customer service. Try and knock Amazon's customer service and you are making yourself look like a complete moron as Amazon was ranked as the best U.S. company in terms of customer service for the year 2009.

So a big FU to all those who post rants with no reason aside to just insult other people for having an opinion!

one, i agree with the above. it felt slightly like a noob comment
two, i'll say one thing about amazon. they're normally pretty cheap.
three, I think play.com is the way forward. and ebay. obviously. (Games are too expensive)

I'm going with laxpro on this. To count how many problems I've had with gs would be way too many. Amazon is the best the few problems I've had with my items they fix them right away! Best customer service from any company I've bought from.

Yeah but with such a sweet list of titles that have been out recently
Red Dead
GOW3
Heavy Rain
Just Cause 2
to mention the ones that instantly spring to mind, then its not suprising.
(I'm aware some came out some while ago, but not every buys Day 1)

what did they expect?
i go away for 5 days and now im 2 hours away from finishing alan wake, and i have not even started mod nation racers, red dead redemption, PoPsot, split second, blur, alpha protocol ect ect.

speaking of alan wake, im absolutely loving that game!
the combats a little lackluster, repetitive ect but everything else is nothing short of PERFECT!!!
especially the storyline, forget MGS, forget assassins creed, forget GOW, NOTHING! tells a better story than alan wake!
this game would make the master Stephen king himself proud!

anyone who has a 360 and does not have this should be shot!
and anyone who does not have a 360 should go out and get one right now!
well, thats if remedy dont bring it over to the PC which i bet they wont.
50 bucks says M$ gave them a blank check to keep it off the PC.
kinda a massive f*ck you to their PC fans though seeing they were only showing off PC footage for what 4 years upto E3 last year for f*cks sake!!!
you cant advertise a game for 4 freaking years on a particular platform than cancel it for that platform.

so, remedy.
f*ck you for treating your fans this way.
but……………….
THANK YOU FOR MAKING ONE OF THE BEST GAMES IVE EVER PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been lucky in that the GS by my house is staffed with pretty console-neutral employees. The only time I've heard them really talk up on console over another is when they're asked and they seem to be pretty fair about it(i.e. if they think the 360/PS3/Wii version is better they'll say why instead of just saying "<console> version is better"). I don't sell stuff back or buy used because, in that regard, they do rip people off quite a bit so I do what I can to keep that at a minimum.

This shouldn't really be a surprise. I'm *still* working on my backlog of games that game out in March. I think I'm going to be playing games that game out in March until the end of the year.

Seriously, what was up with March?

I'd rather save my money and wait patiently until I can afford to buy a game new than to buy it used from gamestop.

Screwing me over once is one time too many.

Plain and simple gamestop sucks. They punish you if you don't buy games from them. You miss out on the exclusive dlc for wanting to save a few extra bucks.
