When I first saw this news, the little man inside my head started jumping up and down, screaming like a loon, "you're gonna ruin it, you're gonna ruin it!"
But maybe not. According to Deadline , a screen rights auction for one of the generation's best has just closed; the word is that Unique Features is close to scoring a deal to make a film based on Quantic Dream's amazing Heavy Rain . The latter has sold over 1 million units since its launch in February and is expected to sell over 1.5 million before the close of this year; a wonderful achievement considering it's only available on the PlayStation 3. As many of you already know, this is a game that has allowed the industry to take a few giant steps in the right direction. It was an artistic, story-based production that pulled on heartstrings and made us think; it represented honest-to-goodness human emotion and we felt connected to all the characters. It was indeed a phenomenon but can this be recreated on the big screen? Movies don't need a Renaissance…well, then again, maybe they do . And in the right hands, perhaps a "Heavy Rain" film could prove helpful to that industry as well.
Anyway, we'll let you know what happens. If this deal does go through, they had best get a fantastic cast and crew…
Related Game(s): Heavy Rain
You're little man is right, they would ruin this if brought to film. But I'm as bad as anyone because I'd definitely go see it.
Get Jacqui Ainsley and I'll definitely consider it.
Yes, please.
I need to play this game again. I'm going to try and beat it again before Red Dead arrives.
The more games come out for my PS3 the more I can't stand movies. I don't even know if that's normal. To sit and watch these crappy movies over getting a good two hours in on a game just rubs me the wrong way. I get antsy after about thirty minutes and start reaching for my controller.
Tell me about it, I finally rent Avatar and it was the biggest waste of 2 1/2 hours that could have been used gaming of all time. I'm sorry but you can't just update what happened to the Native Americans, give it a different ending and call it an epic.
That's what I've been saying ! That movie is trash!
Thanks for that World. You saved me a few days of Netflix wait time and 2 1/2 hours of my life. 🙂

Dudes, I am surprised why all this Avatar hate.
I agree with Alienange about playing games over watching movies, I think this is the way to go… the industry is changing fast and I think 20 to 30 years from now…. going to the movies will be a very different experience, if "going to the movies" still exist. In fact it may be more of an interactive experience, rather than just sitting there watching drivel.
Regarding Avatar specifically. I enjoyed the "ride" in the cinema's. It was the only film I had watched on the big screen in the past 4 years. I don't care for many of them, but "Avatar" was a spectacle.
Remember, we go to the movies to have fun, and be taken away, and the box office proved that people generally appreciated what Cameron tried to do. A lot of good has come from this production, countless people were employed by it over the years – whilst being made; and huge investment in new technologies were had, a whole new 3D camera rig and related technologies were invented.
All this "spill over" will effect the way games are made, the way game styles will change; Avatar has had a large impact on many facets of the entertainment industry, I think we all owe his efforts some credit, however small.
Cameron got well rewarded for his efforts… as a "chewing-gum" movie I really think it was not bad, it has a generic story no doubt, but it was still an incredible experience to see it in 3D… a day I will not forget for a long time… (maybe that is because I don't go and see that many films); but, I still feel it pushed the boundaries of film making and we will see this effecting games and game technologies in the future…
I would rather have had Avatar than not!

I'm sorry you guys did not enjoy Avatar. I agree with Qubex, it was a great ride. What was an amazing achievement for the movie was the Uncanny Valley. Many times I could not tell the difference between real and rendered. Sometimes the rendered scenes looked more real than some of the actors!
I wish I had seen the film in 3D, but I'll settle for the glorious HD visuals. It is a long movie to sit through, so it's very understandable why people would not enjoy it. Maybe try watching it parts, like a mini-series.
I wasn't talking about the tech, it was very well done, I was talking about the plot and characters. It was all stock stuff, not even an attempt at something different.
Yes World, I have to admit, the plot and characters were shallow no doubt 🙂

Heavy Rain The Movie, huh? They'll need more than a million and a half people to go see it.

hmm… will we get the happy ending, the bad ending, something in between, or something altogether new
It'd better be new.
If it's made here in NA, you can bet it'll be the feel-good ending. I'd say 80% chance. 20% chance of the bad ending. I say that there's a 90% chance of the 20%'d bad ending will still have some sort of poetic justice, so even if the bad guy wins, something bad will still happen to him.
Wouldnt it be good if they made the movie with multiple endings. That way, you'd go and watch it, your mates would go and watch it, and you'd discuss the different ending you saw just like you did with the game
The only thing that would make the movie good is if it isn't Heavy Rain but maybe remotely connected…
And if they include Madison's shower and strip scenes 😉
The Saboteur's was better…
I recently saw the Scott Shelby actor on another movie and had one of those brainfart moments because he looks exactly the same. Of course he was playing a cop.

Hell, that just made me realize that all the voice actors look exactly the same in real life. That would make the movie so much better if they used the same actors in it.
I agree.
Ok. But first wheres the MGS movie, and the uncharted movie and all the other movies that they planned to do? I only see prince of persia.
I have a big problem with this:
Wouldn't be a huge dissapointment for us, gamers, who the Origami Killer is in the movie??
We would know who is it the instant the character is presented in screen
Non-gamers should have no problem with this, though…
Unless they change characters and plot, of course…
And that would lead to a "loosely based in the game" movie like Resident Evil, for instance

yeah that'd be a bummer, but I would be sure to go with someone who didn't know. I don't know why but that makes it better when someone is like "C'mon just tell me" and I'm all "no way."
World was that derailed?
Hmmmm i disapprove of this the whole point of this game was to bring the cinematic experience to the PS3, s as if their stealing it.
But more importantly in my opinion, any idea when they're releasing another chronicles episode? i have heard nothing about the rest
Think I would walk out of the cinema if the characters did not do what I wanted them too.
I hope they use the game's original cast, that'd be awesome.
Though I can't imagine which of the 16 endings would be appropriate for the big screen.
I hope they not only use the original cast but use the same visual style, ie (semi)animated ingame look. That would be cool, daring and an interesting step to further close the gap between game and movie.
Any of you seen A Scanner Darkly (my fav movie last decade!!)? A production technique similar to that is what I have in mind.
i wouldnt mind if the film was in cgi
Ooooh! Go download the Bioshock 2 trailer from PSN. Watch it and them tell me you wouldn't want to see them make a Bioshock movie that its CGI.
Fantastical!
$10 says Ebert will give it a low score despite how good or bad it is.
Hopefully Uwe Boll won't direct it.
