Red Dead Redemption: The $100 Million Western?

Well now, that's a hefty amount of cash. Usually, though, when we hear this estimate (which we heard concerning God of War III , and the truth was closer to maybe $25 million), it's way off, so take this with a grain of salt.

The information comes courtesy of a brief detail rundown at the UK publication, Daily Mail , which calls Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption "groundbreaking." They talk about the expansive world, its obvious relationship to Grand Theft Auto , the player freedom to kill an outlaw or take him alive, the resulting affect your actions has on the populace, the immense attention to detail, the fantastic voice acting, the lengthy single-player campaign (estimated at 30 hours, but if you want to do everything, a lot more), the fitting music, and yes, the $100 million estimate. They also cite the New York Times review that includes a rather bold statement:

"Though it draws on the countless classic cinema westerns of the past, Red Dead Redemption does something that none of them could ever dream of. It makes you the hero of an amazing historical adventure that you yourself have a hand in creating. And how many of us thought that that particular dream might ever come true?"

Well, it may be a bold statement but after playing for some time, I can tell you…it's pretty darn accurate. You can expect to see our review towards the end of the day today and although I won't be handing out any hints, I would strongly suggest that you put RDR on the top of your priority list.  Just about everything you've heard is warranted and once again, we should all probably bear in mind that the game is being reviewed by someone who typically despises Westerns…and yet, I don't want to play much else all of a sudden.  …weird.

i got red dead the day of release and im really enjoying it. (the single player at least)

but the multiplayer, im not a fan of. i find myself just sticking to free roam and doing the same gang hideouts over and over with my buddies.

i know there are challenges to b completed in the journal but as i do them i somehow have no feeling of accomplishment. (again i cant explain it)

also i was hoping there would be more interesting missions to do online with your posse. (like robbing a train, or escorting a train or carraige, races, some forme of a horde/survival mode), i know they have the police hunting you down when you're wanted but its not hard whatsoever and most of the time i just sit in a spot and just keep shooting them, there is an achievement to survive for 10 mins but its soo easy i find myself just getting bored and waiting.)

the competitive modes suck with this type of game to me. (and i have no idea why, maybe i just find it boring compared to uncharted 2 online.) maybe its the euphoria engine, i love it and what they are going for and it has improved over GTA4 but its like a really sluggish control system to me.

the weapon selection wheel im also not a fan of (especially in the competitive modes. sometimes you are looking for the right gun for the job and u have to sift through you inventory in the middle of a match to pick it eg. switching from a lever action rifle to a revolver on the fly is just not intuitive especially in a faster paced competitive mode)

also not a fan of the party system. it is horrible if im in a good multiplayer game online and my friends want to join they have to msg me to send them and invite otherwise i have to leave and join them. (which sux, the ability for others to just join your game should be in there, especially in a free roam game like this)

and on top of it all there are soo many damn Bugs.

-players horses disappearing
-NPC Marshalls dissappearing as they shoot me
-sometimes my friends will join me online but they are no where on my map or on my screen but we can hear each other
-my buddy leveled up to lvl 14 then the game froze and when he got it working again his online level an stats were rest to 0
-the game crashed and booted me back to XMB when my horse got hit by a train. (singleplayer)

the list goes on.

dont get me wrong, the game is phenomenal the single player is soo damn entertaining and the scenery is soo beautiful and well done, but the multiplayer i think needs a lot more work.

I'm definitely with you on uncharted 2s polish. I was a bit disappointed with some of the problems. Not as bad as yours but hopefully they will release a patch for it or something.

I guess even a cool 100 million can't buy you a glitch free game these days.

How much did Naughty Dog spend on Uncharted 2?

Just imagine how much money they will spend on Agent. I have total confidence that R* will produce very high exclusive worthy quality for PS3.

Seriously…Trolling…how am I trolling unless you consider people stating an honest subjective opinion as trolling. Of course GOWIII looks better than RDR, but when it comes to my taste, I prefer RDR in the graphics department because it just feels more realistic. I was not trying to troll or disrespect anybody, but I see you take comments too seriously man…seriously don't voice your opinion if you are just going to act immature. Bet if you met me in person, you wouldn't say that mess so freely and that is not a threat…I am just stating what I feel is a fact. Its easy to insult, accuse, etc. behind closed doors. All I am saying is either you can be more respectful/thoughtful or just keep unneeded negative comments to yourself.

I'm not the only one who smelled a troll after your comment. You didn't state that RDR was better looking as a matter of opinion but as a matter of fact. And why shouldn't i take it as an insult and fire back when you beg people to ignore me. Obviously some found my FACTS informative and useful. Also i think you would find i am as blunt in person as i am on the net so no not make veiled threats at me champ.

So is the quality difference between the PS3 version and the 360 version enough to warrant sacrificing multiplayer?

I'm not going to pay Xbox Live. I buy single player multiplat games like Fallout 3 and GTA4 for the 360. I thought GTA4 online was garbage. I'm going into this thinking that RDR will be similar. But maybe I'm wrong.

At least if I get the PS3 version, I can play online. Would love some feedback.

Still unacceptable. They spend 100$mil and can't output the game in 720p? I don't really care as it looks good but should this trend continue I ain't gonna buy any more R* games for my PS3 (don't own a 360 though :P).

In hindsight it makes totally sense why the review embargo was lifted 1 friggin' day prior to release, kinda late for US-pre-orders to be canceled ^^.

Are you really *that* pixel orientated? Geez man… How large is your screen? Do you count pixels while playing, too? Enjoy the GAMES, man. The artistic details that's put into it, the atmospheric playfields, the game mechanics instead of sobbing over some technical fact sheet details.

Remember this: Much of the worlds best music are created using "technical inferior specifications". And most of the world's TRASH are created using the latest technology.

So I am *very* happy to see that Rockstar got their priorities straight. It's content that counts. It would be tragic if they had spent their time and money making a HD version for the PS3 instead. (yay me – I managed to squeeze a pro multi-platform plug into this too! Damn I'm good ;))

Nah, I ain't. Hoped "I don't really care as it looks good…" would be self-explanatory. Usually I buy/play games for fun's sake 😉

It's just sad and adds new fuel to all those retard-xbots on EG once Mr. Leadbutter publishes his DF face-off. Leadbutter will use that chance to trash our beloved PS3 once again, and so will 90% of the comments -_-.

I really don't care about that stuff as it's hardly game-braking, but it is sad, nevertheless.

Sorry if you perceived my comment improperly. I'm not a pixel counter, nor am I a brand warrior. Just a German dude who enjoys excellent games 😉

Sorry for dp, but the edit button disappeared ^^.

I'm playing on my PC screen (24" wide-screen, WUXGA resolution) @ 1080p (DVI to HDMI cable). Therefore I can't really complain as the image is always pristine (only Yakuza 3 looks kinda washed out).

So don't worry, I am not complaining and I apologize should my original comment imply otherwise.

Is it just me, or do a LOT of people on this site flame "Xbots" because they think the "Xbots" flame all the time? Isn't that hypocritical? (And just so I'm fair, Ben, it's not just this site. I'm just speaking to this site at the moment.) You can be pro whatever, but don't complain about the problem while adding to it.

Yeah I should of stated it was an opinion, but I even stated in my comment that I wasn't trying to be rude so that should have been enough to erase any blatant rudness in my comment. And seriously no one is threatening you, I am not that type of person, but if someone tries to call me something I not, I will take offense and react. Anyway, yes you were stating facts, but it seemed like you were trying to tell people not to buy a 'good' game because of the graphic differences. We just had a misunderstaing so lets leave it at that and don't try to get smart 'champ'…don't try to degrade me because again thats uncalled for. My first comment may have been introduced incorrectly and seemed like I was attacking you or anyone who had a problem with RDR graphics (which I was not, I was stating my honest opinion), but you are trying to attack me directly which is donwright ridiculous. Also I didn't 'beg' anyone, I told them to stop listening to your negative comments, begging is when you repeatedly say the same thing over and over just to get something your way. I did not such thing, thus don't descride my act as such. Your trying to flip this argument and make me seem negative which I am not. Your trying to use subtle words that downplay my comments and make me seem like the bad guy…seriously don't do that, that is something children do. I am a very reasonable person and I do not need someone trying to belittle, especially over the internet. My man, you left alot of comments commenting on how you are dissappointed with the Sub-HD…that was enough for me to take notice and feel that people should here another opinion that not only stated facts, but one that expresses an honest opinon about RDR graphics on the PS3 and its value compared to other recent PS3 exclusives (GOWIII and Heavy Rain). All I was tring to do was let people know, RDR looks good…who cars. Jawknee, I really don't care to press the issue because there is no issue. I am not trying to attack you, I was only stating my opinon earlier and in no way, shape or form did I mean to insult you and if you took it that way, thats you. This is not an apology, but a way for me to bring reasoning and sense to this misunderstanding. And realy if people thumb me down for this like my last comment, man you must not respect common sense and/or reason. Even Ben said there is nothing wrong with the graphics.
