After an important price drop and some top exclusives, the PlayStation 3 has remained a hot item ever since last fall.
The only problem is, due to the continued high demand, it has become difficult for consumers to land a PS3. Both online and brick-and-mortar stores are reporting low inventory and even sold-out statuses for Sony's console; the standard 120GB model was sold out at Best Buy's online games division this past week, for instance. You can't even get it quickly from Amazon, as the online retailer gives a 2-4 week shipping period if you order the PS3 now, and they're even limiting the purchase number to one per household. And according to Punch Jump , we'll get a few big discounted titles this week – two of which are exclusive to the PS3 – that will increase demand a bit more. God of War III will go down to $49.99, Assassin's Creed II will fall to $29.99, and you can nab the LittleBigPlanet Game of the Year Edition for only $27.99. The bottom line is that if you don't already own a PS3, or yours unfortunately conked out, you may be hard-pressed to find a new unit immediately. GameStop might have some left, though.
Remember when you really couldn't give the PS3 away at $600 in early 2007? Well, at least the summer appears somewhat dry so Sony should be able to restock.
I still don't know why Sony aren't meeting demands. PS3 are making profit per hardware sold, why aren't they manufacturing more?
Gods, actually, Sony Computer Entertainment and their gaming division are still making a loss, and they reported that for financial years 2010/2011 they will make another loss.
Every loss is smaller than the last one, but their division as a whole is till losing money, and that is a fact, by Sony's own admission…
Now, you are right that hardware components within the computer division, such as the actual PS3 console hardware may now have broken even, but only just…
Secondly, if you look at what they are lining up for E3…
1] Move
2] PSP2
3] Premier PSN service
All these "additions" to the PS3 consoles armoury are to make more money, as much as possible.
The MOVE is to try and steal some of the WII people, the PSP2 is to combat APPLE's threat of the iPhone and iPad combination and the Premier PSN service is to get a couple of million extra a year from people to help their bottom line.
With the release of all these above, Sony will be hoping to narrow their losses, but they are still losing. 2011 should be far healthier for Sony, but I think, even they must wonder at their board meetings how difficult it has been (this time round in particular) to get the business to work in their favour… having the 360 around has not helped in the slightest… and having the WII party ship around too, has further complicated matters…
It hasn't been easy for Sony, but they are going forward and we are seeing some great titles coming out from their studios… fantastic really.
Let us hope they continue to ship this extra-ordinary number of consoles so we get parity with the 360 sooner rather than later…
This is what I am waiting for, parity and then passing the 360 finally!

this probably just means that even Sony didn't expect to sell this many. I'm sure now they'll start making more. good for them.
It's hard to "give" anything away at $600, haha.
Sony should probably make some more systems though.
I'm happy for the ps3.
…… assassin's creed 2 has been 29.99 for a while
true story.
its 24.99 at walmart online, if i want to get it i can just price match at best buy. since i worked there for a bit, they practically let me price match with any place i want. Did that with FF13. got it about 10 bucks off because of a online site that was unknown plus another 10 bucks off for buying the guide which was their deal.
I just bought ACII today for 14.99 (after $10 game credit) and it came with an additional $10 future game credit from Amazon (dot) com. Score!
is it just me, are all of the stores getting the wii's in fully stocked and not caring about the black wii's? i know this is of the topic, but if ff13 was exclusive to the ps3 everywhere, and they brought that ff13 designed console to the states and included the collector's edition game for about the same price as the stand alone 250 gig. wow.
I had to go to ten different stores here in the Bronx just to get the ps3 250 Gig slim.
That sucks. You could have bought a 120GB model for $270 and then bought a 500GB hard drive and an enclosure and still had enough money for a game with your purchase.
How? The 250GB PS3 goes for $349, at least that's what I paid for mine last year.
A couple retailers had the 120GB PS3 on sale for $270 and $260 this past week. If you went with the online retailer, that saves on shipping and taxes. With those savings vs. the 250GB model, that would leave money left over to buy a 500GB hard drive, an external case for the 120GB hard drive and a game.
*gasp* that amazing ability to get sweet deals.. robodaddy-o, is that you?
This is John. 😉
Wow I knew that PS3 was doing better but I didn't know there where still being sold out. That's Awesome.
Come on Sony meet the demand. I'm planing on getting a second one.
HAHA xbox!!!
Sony is going to pass up xbox quick. especialy if they make some bundles like an GT5 bundle. I'll be buying one.
There hasn't been a ps3 sitting on a store shelf in my town since December. Altho I have a feeling that this could be another marketing strategy by sony.
Lower the amount of available ps3's so that demand becomes high enough to cause ps3 shortages to reach mainstream media. Suddenly people who aren't on top of things start to think. "Wow ps3s are hard to get a hold of I better go get one, I was thinking of waiting until holiday or birthday time but what if they don't have any."
It's all a plot, so when everyone is begging for them ps3's flood the shelves this fall, everyone runs to the store like they've just been released and sony outsells microsoft big time. Well that's my big beautiful dream anyway.
Nah I don't think so. Here downtown Montreal we receive about 40 ps3's a week and sell em out within seven days.
Sony keeps shipping but the Ps3s don't sit still O-O . In comparison the black Wiis are begging to be picked up lol.
And the Sony rep also told us they sold the ps3s much faster than anticipated. They had made a huge order 2 months and a half ago and it just arrived recently. They thought they had enough stocks to hold until the order was completed but yah… Guess people are finally starting to wake up 😀
But I like your plot theory loll

Guess people are getting tired of that old DVD player
Here in ontario Canada, I see them go really quick but a few of our stores like futureshop where my friend works say they are now getting about 1 or 2 shipments a week but they are all gone by the weekend.
@scarecrow, I bet the majority of people are defently buying it for the blueray player, I purhcased a Sony stand alone blueray player for my parents and lets say it's crap it was onsale for 130 CDN but I should of just forked over the extra cash for a PS3, not sure why the stand alone Sony player does not work very well it just takes forever to boot and forever to open the disc tray. I know that this coming christmas I'll being getting them a PS3, My mom like heavy rain.
I sell these things for a living!
Seriously though, just over the weekend I sold 6 PS3s. Glad to see people are realizing that the Wii isn't the best one on the market…
PS3 offers the best bang for the buck at $299.
Free online is a HUGE deal. Built in Wi-Fi, a user assessable hard drive, and Blu-Ray player are features unique to the PS3.
Sony has, in its first 3 years, compiled a massive list of unique exclusive software releases: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Resistance: Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, Little Big Planet, Demon's Souls, MLB: The Show, God of War 3, Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Most of these great games cost less than $40…
In addition to ALL multi-platform games.
Duh! Why wouldn't you get a PS3?

what? you forgot about heavy rain, white knight chronicles, mag, 3d dot game heroes, warhawk, resistance 2, valkyria chronicles, and the modnation racers game. hahaha, sony exclusives beat the hell out of 360 exclusives.

make ps4 ok
Their have been limited supplies of the PS3 for the past 3 months now. Had it confirmed by a Sony representative 6 weeks ago that their is just not enough coming into the U.K currently to meet demand. This is due to the sales expectation being exceeded, so the output quota from the factory was not enough.
well like did i went in it knowing it was gonna be tough to get one… i got a 80 gb fatty but i wanted a slim so i set out tearin up the internet attack the pick up in stores options on these online retailers that was how i found 1 250GB slim
75 miles away at a super kmart i checked bestbuy, walmart, sears, toys r us… all gamestops near 70mile radius… just get neighboring zip codes and prepare for a road trip and u'll land the impossible to find ps3!!!!
The PS3 is killing the 360 in Japan.
The PS3 is taking over Europe.
The PS3 is barely behind in the USA.
Glad to see people finally wising up!!
Anybody know where I can get a 360? Oh, that's right, there are stacks and stacks of them at every store I walk into.
Then you look where the PS3 should be, and it has been dry as a desert for months. I can't remember the last time I actually saw a PS3 in a store.
LOl here in Canada PS3's and 360 are always in stock. The onyl ones that do ever get out of stock are wii's for some reason. If you ask me, $300 for a ps3 is a steal!
On a somewhat related note….
PS3's are also catching up to the 360 in Australia too.
PS3s sold in Australia: 850,000
