Dead Space 2 Multiplayer Won’t Affect Single Player Experience

We're likin' EA's approach to multiplayer gaming: first, they assign two completely different teams to Medal of Honor ; EALA to handle the single-player campaign and DICE to handle the multiplayer.

And now, they're saying that although the new multiplayer mode in the upcoming Dead Space 2 will "surprise and excite," it will not come at the expense of the single-player adventure. This according to what the game's executive producer, Steve Papoutsis, told CVG ; he knows the team needs to produce an "extremely high-quality" sequel after the smash hit that was the original. He says he thinks that due to their efforts to give gamers an awesome online multiplayer experience, some may believe they're "watering down" the single-player experience." But remember that bit about EA using two teams for MoH…? Said Papoutsis:

"We actually have the luxury of having another team that's working with us [on multiplayer]. We've taken people that made the original Dead Space and given them the goal of making a very compelling and uniquely Dead Space multiplayer game. Those guys sit with us, work with us, and they understand how important it is to make sure that whatever we do on the franchise is extremely high quality and is extremely seated in the Dead Space universe."

Maybe EA really is getting that there are gamers who actually want to play a game by themselves. Maybe they realize that utilizing extra resources to satisfy both single-player and multiplayer fans will pay off in the end. Well, when Dead Space 2 hits some time during the first quarter next year, we're willing to bet those efforts will pay off.

Good to read, the SP experience is what really brought Dead Space to the top tier of the survival horror genre. Such a great game, DS2 will be awesome.

Saying I am stoked for this game is an understatement, but regardless, If it offers some kind of Co-op action it will be more than welcome. It would be cool it they had Necromorph hunt like Terrorist Hunt on RS Vegas.

I now what you mean.

Although, I already made a list and came to the realization that I won't have enough extra money for all of these great titles. 🙁

Well this is good news indeed, multiplayer causing the Sp to suffer should never have happened and it's good to see a dev realize that. I rarely play multiplayer online and a game that is mostly online just doesn't appeal to me.

There can only be so many deathmatch games before there are enough of them, I really think it's ridiculous how every single game nowadays feel forced to include a multiplayer shoot'em'up mode. Why did they do that with for example uncharted 2, it was just so unneccesary? Not that I'm a big fan of the game to begin with, I'm not, but the multiplayer mode seemed just misplaced.
Either make a good singleplayer game, OR a good multiplayer, I say. If the next Fallout include a multiplayer deathmatch too then I will cry out loud.

Uncharted 2 was a better game then Fallout 3.

With Fallout, all they would have to do is make the game allow more players on the map.

Uncharted's multiplayer is great, and it's a fun extension of the game, I feel while I would keep playing the SP the multiplayer keeps me coming back. Agree to disagree on that. I agree however Fallout games should remain single player, but if developers can make multiplayer interesting why complain. Even if multiplayer seems like an afterthought on a great single player game, you still have the single player experience you enjoy.

They could certainly skip the multiplayer altogether and it would be fine with me. But since they've got to have it (It's The Law), at least they've got a team devoted entirely to the single player campaign.

Everything I've heard about this is sounding great. Really looking forward to it.

What I think would be a great way to handle multiplayer in this game would be a Demon's Souls type implementation. Bear with me here.

Ok so you start up Dead Space 2 and you are given the option to player in single player mode or multiplayer mode if you start single player, you are Isaac, you play the game from front to back it's it that's that everyone is happy and satisfied with a stellar entry into the series.

This is where it gets interesting, you pick multiplayer and you are given the option to play as Isaac, where you play from front to back yadda yadda, or you can pick Necro where you get to pick what type you are starting off as just basic first level Necro. You can then play as a Necro in someone else's game while they are playing as Isaac. You get experience for taking down Isaac or even other human player or CPU player Necro with which you can gain access to more advanced Necro. The Isaac player would be going along just as if the game where in single player but have human enemies and not know the difference.

I think that would add an entire element of intensity without taking anything away from the single player because multiplayer would be directly integrated in instead of add on.

What do you guys think? Should EA and Visceral give me a job for these brilliant ideas or is that just crap?

I personally would love it. Great idea especially about the player not knowing if the enemy will be player controlled I found myself wishing in Demon's souls that I could sneak into a players game without the warning and to have people sneak into my game to make it more intense.

Some games just don't need multiplayer or it simply doesn't fit. Those same games, though, could benefit from co-op play so long as the single player campaign remains unaffected.

If they're cramming the multiplayer onto the same DVD as the singleplayer then buddy, it's going to be affected.

you know i was really worried about this in the beginning, it sounded like there trying to turn the series into a mindless action game.
but now the more and more i read about it, the more excited i get.
i read a few pages in PSM3 they had a in depth preview of it, and its sounding 10 times better than the first!
they actually have some strategy in the game this time, you can use your environment to your advantage.
like if your surrounded by enemies and cant take them out quick enough, just shoot the glass.
the glass will blow out and suck all the enemies out the window, but theres a catch.
it will also suck you out, so you have to time your shot perfectly and close the blaster shield.
time it wrong, and it slices you in half.
OUCH!

this is without a doubt going to be THE BEST! game released in 2011, up there with RAGE and half life 2 epp 3.
hey, i can dream cant i?

I dont know but I think people said EA was an evil company and only wanted money..or was that Activision?…I forget back then to me they seemed similiar, but I think EA is smart on giving 2 difrent companies or split a team to work one on Single Player and other on mutiplayer so they both be awesome and dont feel rushed. Hats of to you EA

Can't wait for this game! Hopefully with the multiplayer addition they add some really cool game modes. Like Survival-survive the horde of necromorphs for as many rounds possible. Or Complete the Objective-while journeying through the ship there are certain objectives and goals to meet while necromorphs flood and swarm around you. Team Deathmatch and Free for All. Necromorph Hunting-defeat a certain amount of necromorphs before your opponents. Hold Your Ground-where you fight off necromorphs until your escape plan comes to fruition. It's Gonna Blow-race across the ship defeating necromorphs then opening access points when the coast is clear until you reach the exit, luckily in the given time-frame. There are just so many possiblities here. But still give us that frightfully flawless single-player experience which certainly takes precedence over the multiplayer. 😉
