We've got some follow-up numbers and commentary to go along with the previously released numbers concerning Sony's last fiscal year. These are for the April results:
First of all, the PlayStation 3 continues to be the only console on the market to see double-digit growth both year-over-year (42.6%) and year-to-date (37.2%), God of War III was the #5 software SKU for the month of April, and the PlayStation brand made up 28% of all video game dollar shares, which is an impressive achievement in and of itself. It's a good start to the new fiscal year, where Sony expects to sell a total of 15 million PS3s worldwide before March 31, 2011 rolls around. As for April, SCEA boss Jack Tretton had this to say:
"Having just surpassed nine consecutive months of year over year growth for PS3 hardware and a revenue increase of 32% for PS3 software since last April, we look at today's earnings as a proof point to our business model. The continued momentum of our brand only further solidifies the value proposition we offer our consumers — we're providing complete entertainment experiences so our consumers can enjoy what they want, how they want it. Today, this includes games, movies, TV shows, streamed sporting events, and original content. Later this year, it will grow to include ground-breaking new innovations such as 3D games and movies, and a whole new kind of motion controlled gaming. Consumers will have a lot of reasons to be entertained this year and we're confident that PlayStation will be at the heart of bringing these new entertainment experiences to consumers."
The "complete entertainment experience" has really come into its own over the past few years, as the Network has expanded at a ridiculous rate and Blu-Ray has solidified itself in the marketplace. On top of which, when the "all-in-one" unit is half the price of when it first launched in 2006, it's a whole lot more appealing to consumers.
I fully expected them to sell 15 mil over that period, even when people were saying it wouldn't happen in a million years. What will be really interesting is whether or not the PS3 peaks at this point. I sincerely hope not; the PS2 got close to 30 million in a year at one point, if my memory is correct. 15 million in hardware is phenominal nowadays but I can't help but hope for more.
So… Sony owns?
Sony owns.
Thats right, Sony owns.
Im happy that I contributed to that goal, by buying a PS3 last year! Best thing I did all last year!

If you want to get into the details of your comment, we can.
Lets count fail rate of PS3 to 360. Then estimate the number of 360's purchased as replacement consoles.
Once we've done that, the install base of the PS3 should be around 1 million higher than that of 360 worldwide by now, not just in the US or UK.
Remember, US and UK are not the only gamers in the world. They are the biggest 360 buyers in the world though…

PS3 has been outselling the 360 for while now. It's only in the US & UK the swing has not occurred.
why is it whenever this topic comes up fail rates for the 360 are always first on the list but never ps3s?
360s are the only console that break?
ive had my ps3 break on me 3 times, my 360?
NONE!
not to mention almost every FW update sony has released ended up bricking so many systems its a miracle they have not been sued yet!
it happened to my cuzs 60GB last year, he was so mad he was ready to use his ps3 as a wrecking ball!!
and i wont repeat some of the things he said on the phone to sony, because well some may be offended.
and to be honest i cant blame him, id be pretty cheesed off too!
Have you bought multiple PS3s as replacement systems? If not, it wouldn't apply to this debate.
I've had 2 YLODs, but I'm still using the same launch system. Many, many 360s are broken and no longer in use.
yup, first one i had to because it was out of warranty.
Don't forget about the 360's that M$ killed a few months ago due to mods.
mmm, what about all the ps3s bricked by gimped FW updates?
No doubt, very promising new, Sony just need to get their actual revenues to match their product growth statistics… they are still bleeding quite a bit of cash. 2010/2011 financial year should be much better. Every year they are loosing less and less… but overall, i think the news is positive for our beloved platform 🙂
Q!

I knew Sony would pull this off.. Glad I contributed to the start of the PS3 🙂 now thinking of getting another one for my bedroom been fighting over the other one in the living room with the husband.
@ffrulez, not a great idea to start that war in the comment section.
Sony wins big today and will be winning even bigger next year.
mhmmm, release GT5 and see that shoot through the roof!!!!
no, seriously 5 years? im tired of waiting! I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm glad i have good patience with things, you would think I'm not human.
Considering all the great exclusives we've had from them so far this generation, I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with some actual profits to finance the whole thing 🙂
It's actually really great now that the prices of BD are in a more reasonable range. The wife's gonna need a PS3 for her movies soon because mine has that permanent "Occupied" sign on the front.
I would actually say on how many working systems there are, we beat them for sure. Hopefully we'll beat Xbox 360 sales by the end of this year.
Then after that, the Wii's next. That will be a hard one.
So it's been 9 months already?
Well Sony, then congrats are in order on your newest baby girl, although she was born a bit slim, it certainly hasn't stopped her forward progress one bit.
BTW, the doc just looked over her sales sonogram & since those spike's are off the graph, he's officially pronounced her a "perfect lil bundle of joy"
