Castlevania Producer “Would Love To Do A 3D Contra”

Say the name, and long-time gamers everywhere will immediately recall the good ol' days, when "multiplayer" meant your best buddy was sitting next to you and the grease from the pizza by your side was starting to affect your skills.

But since the golden age of the industry, most will agree that Contra has only gone downhill (with a few minor exceptions) and some are wondering if we'll ever see this series again. Well, never say never, my friends… A reader has turned us onto Castlevania: Lords of Shadow producer David Cox's Twitter page , where he refers to his desire to create a "big 3D Contra game:"

"Would love to do a big 3D Contra game. Its a project I have tried to get going in Konami for years! One can dream, right?"

Well, yes, I suppose. But ever since they tried to leave 2D behind and enter the 3D universe, we've seen mediocre attempts like Contra: Legacy of War and Neo Contra . But then again, it's a widespread belief that the Castlevania series has never made a great transition to 3D and coincidentally, Cox is working on what might be the first fantastic 3D CV entry. So perhaps this particular development team is exactly the group to give us a great 3D Contra , although we understand if Konami isn't too crazy about the idea.

How about a new 2D Contra for the PSN? Of course, I want a true 2D sequel to Symphony of the Night on the PSN, too, but that's sort of like hoping for a true sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics . …sometimes, we just have to accept the disappointing reality of the time.

So…. he wants to do another shooter??? No thanks, we have plenty of them, and most of them suck.

And Ben, better be dissapointed with the reality of time than with a really bad sequel that turned your most favorite game of all time into shit

I think this was the first console game I ever beat.

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A… good times.

I think if it was done right, it could be an amazing game.

i want it! conta were some of my fav. games when i was younger!

Reffering to what hellish devil said, there are just as many other games out there in different genres. The thing is though most of the big name titles end up being shooters KZ2, COD, Resistance, Gears, Halo. And the thing is they get developed more frequently thats all. And there are plenty of solid shooters still being released… So one can argue either side. But what im getting at is Contra being a classic, if done right could be awesome!

oh dam …. imagine 3d contra will do what demon's souls done for action/rpgs make games dead hard and more satifying, if this ever did happen the game would HAVE to be same difficulty as 2d ones 🙂

stuff 3D!
as my tafe teacher says (and for once i actually agree with him) true gaming died when we switched from 2D to 3D.

If Castlevania turns out as well as we all hope, then I'm all for them taking a stab at a new Contra.

I liked Contra because there were lots of enemies to kill and interesting weapons to kill them with. There was no cover mechanic, and all the enemy's bullets were in slow motion, making staying on the move and dodging all the bullets part of the fun.

Nowadays, Ratchet & Clank satisfies my need for that type of game.
Slow motion enemy bullets: check
Lots of enemies: check
Interesting weapons: check
co-op mode: not check

Is it really that hard to add in another playable skin to a game and turn it into co-op?

That's why I loved deadlocked on the ps2. Also 4 player deathmatch and online play! You here that insomniac!

I would welcome a new Contra in a heartbeat. But I do have to confess, I liked Neo Contra, still have it. Idk I guess I liked the cheese factor. gave the game charm, lol.

Before I can get my hopes up and hope Mr. Cox gets his hands dirty in such a project, I'd like to measure out how much I enjoy Lords of Shadow first.

I'm still skeptical about 3D Castlevania and most definitely would imagine a 3D Contra would blend right in the middle of the First & Third Person Shooters.

Now if you do a blend of 3D, 2.5D and Aerial stages, I'm game!

The atrocity that was Contra on the DS cured me of any desire to play anything Contra ever again. I'll just sit tight with my memories of when Nintendo used to allow shooters on their console and move on.
