If there's one game that might surprise you next year, it could be iD Software's Rage . And in a positive update, we find there's more reason for PlayStation 3 owners to be excited.
Last year, iD boss John Carmack admitted that while the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game were running at a silky smooth 60 frames per second, the PS3 version was mired in the 20-30 fps range. This sort of caused the title to fall out of the limelight in the eyes of PS3 owners and besides, we've seen this type of thing before from PC-oriented developers. However, since that time and according to Eurogamer , the team has worked hard to produce a great game, regardless of platform. Rage lead designer Tim Willits spoke about how the game is actually more stable on the PS3 than the 360 right now, even though they showed off the 360 version during a live demonstration (when the game "seldom if ever dipped so much as a toe below the 60 frames-per-second watermark"). For the record, iD will still need 2 DVDs for the 360 version so once again, PS3 owners will have the benefit of one disc and of course, standard Blu-Ray high-definition. It's always good to see developers taking the necessary steps to produce quality for everyone involved. No more lackluster ports, please.
By the way, Willits also spoke to GameTrailers about how his game is more than just running and gunning . You should definitely watch that video; it might put Rage on your "most anticipated" list.

Somehow I still have some reservations about this…
Maybe Sony sent some of their boys over to show them how to code for Cell?
I would love to see an actual demo of RAGE running at 60fps on the PS3. Until then, I'm not too excited yet…
@big6 I agree with u, I just hate when some developers say they are having issues with development on the ps3 and that pisses off ps3 owners, then later on they correct the issues on the ps3 too get us back. We have bend hearing this sense 2007.
Watching the video, this kind of looks like Borderlands…
But is it just me or are FPS games incorporating more and more RPG elements into them? Are we going to see more and more of this and the eventual merging of both genre's? Fallout 3 did it, now this game seems to be doing it while adding a little Motorstorm action as well…
Is this the future of gaming? no more genre's just one giant cesspool of mixed games?
Me was thinking the same thing especially 'bout the Motorstorm bit.
It sounds as if this game was ported to the PS3 after the 360 and PC versions were made.
It's on my list of possible purchases, but I am going to wait until after the game is out.
PS3 first + 360 second = A guarantee buy in most AAA games for me.
in the new video that ben put up for rage the guy from Id claims that they built it from the ground up for all systems, so unless he's being dishonest, it's not really a port.
Ah, didn't know that. Good to know actually.
Thanks!
Well, they said the "engine" was built from scratch by their genius, John Carmack, meaning they weren't using something like Unreal and porting it on the consoles. So it's quite possible, they had the engine working first on pc and 360, then ps3 (which is still porting but allowing easier optimization), which makes sense since it was working better first on the pc and 360, then later said it was more stable on the ps3, than the 360. Methinks this has to do with finally having to compress all the content on only two DVD's for the 360, and not having to struggle with putting much of it uncompressed on Bluray for the ps3.
This game looks very nice it runs at 60 fps. Animations are also apparently very good. Cant wait 🙂
No dedicated server, no deal.
You wouldn't want one for this game. I bet it would get shut down faster than Frodo could steal the ring and deliver it to home base. Dedicated servers are great, but on consoles, if the game tanks in sales you're out a game.
You're probably right, but I was actually referring to the PC version anyway. I get my multi-plats for PC (well, not fighters), exclusives for my PS3. Given such a large library of games to choose from, I can pick and choose which to support based upon my own prerequisites. I require dedicated servers, without 'em, I just don't care anymore.
ahhhhhh but how can it have dedicated servers when its a SP only game?
I haven't seen enough info on this game to really make up my mind one way or another, but I do see this as being another multiplat game using cartoony looking characters instead of pushing the graphical limits.
I'll have to see how this goes when it comes out before I make up my mind either way.
I'd personally take cartoony with style over drab realism any day.
I'd rather have heavy rain graphics over fat toony any day.
I am actually more interested in this game than Crysis 2. I believe the game is meant to be 3 DVD for Xbox, but ID refuse to pay extra royalty to Microsoft, so they compressing to 2 DVD. If PS3 has better texture and smoother gameplay, it will definitely have smooth gameplay.
I watched the video of this the other day and it looks very interesting. To me, the graphics look about 100 times more realistic than Borderlands. If people who haven't worked with the PS3 before have some problems with it at first, but get them all straightened out before the game is released, that's fine with me.
of course they look more realistic than borderlands.
borderlands was cell shaded, they wanted to go for more of a cartoony light feel to the game and it suits it.
borderlands is a humerus game, it does not take itself seriously it has a good sense of humor so normal harsh graphics like fallout 3 would not suit.
I like when games are up to snuff.
Doesn't matter what they say now, we are doomed with lousy ports unless it is form EA, because they are the only publisher that makes their developers make good ports for PS3
EA did Orange Box…
Wow, I was just thinking about this game this morning, wondering how the PS3 version was shaping up, thinking should I get the Linux version or the PS3 one. Nice to know the PS3 version is coming up to scratch, so I can play this on my sofa. Ben if you are reading my thoughts to answer my pondering's so quick, can I just say, it was not you in the tutu I was thinking of, it was some other guy…..
PTOM had an interview with john carmack like a year or so ago, and he said the PS3 was more powerful than the xbox…i wonder what happened?
id's last game wasn't that great. This game just hasn't garnered any interest from me except the development updates. I like id Software, so I hope their new IP gets a warm reception from reviewers and gamers even though I have very little interest in the game.
I saw the vid posted earlier about this game, and gotta say it looked interesting.
Late 2009?
i dont care what they're spitting out. unless they actually show me whats going on then i wont even give a second glance at it.
Wow! I'm not easily impressed, at all. But Rage really did impress me graphics-wise, gameplay-wise, and the voice-overs and character expressions were awesome as well. I'm gonna give this one a second glance whenever more info hits the net because…well…honestly this game looks like it's shaping up to be on my fav 5.
it's an id game. of course it will be great. 🙂
There's just something about FPS mixed with driving that I don't enjoy. I highly doubt id has something for me with this one.
I am going to wait and see on this one… many good games coming out already that are worth a penny or 2 🙂
Q!
