You know about retailer warranties offered when purchasing new video game consoles, and there's always the manufacturer's warranty.
But Sony is doing you one better. Today, SCEA has announced the PlayStation Protection Plan, an extended service offer that is available for the PlayStation 3 and PSP. The Plan will be implemented in the US and new owners can choose between 1 or 2-year coverages that start after the original 1-year manufacturer's warranty has expired. If you just bought the PSP, you'll also have the option of the Accidental Damage Plan, which covers you in case of a cracked screen. The prices involved in the Protection Plan for either the PS3 or the PSP encompass all shipping charges and repairs, "which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians using official parts at SCEA-authorized repair facilities." The pricing info is as follows:
Said SCEA vice president of operations, Glenn Nash:
"The PlayStation® brand has long been synonymous with the highest quality in engineering and design, and it's because of the reliability of the PS3 and PSP systems that we can offer the PlayStation Protection Plan. We have heard from consumers that they're interested in an extended service plan that's backed directly by SCEA and leverages our technical expertise. While both the PS3 and PSP systems are designed with future-proof technology and built for long lifecycles, we're looking forward to offering this service to consumers looking for added peace of mind."
Furthermore, if you purchased your PS3 or PSP within the past year, you can sign up for the Protection Plan if you so desire. As for the Accidental Damage Plan for the Portable, that must be obtained within 30 days of buying the system. Starting this month, you can get your coverage by calling 1-866-716-7669 and for the full Terms and Conditions, visit the official page . It all starts this month.
Bud, I was right there with you. The 60Gig I just got rid of lasted about 4 years (It was still fine when I traded it in)
I didn't have one 360 last 4 months.
And yet I still get people asking me why I don't have Live anymore or buy 360 games.

on topic with you guys my buddy owns a game center, and inside the game center they have about 30 360' and pc' and zero ps3'. Thankfully the only console he owns at home is a ps3 and he loves it. but what im getting at is he says they have a 360 go out atleast once a week. what a nightmare for his business. they also are a pc store building, repairing and parts. the game center is just an addition.
anyways, my PS3 lasted 2 years with constant play time. I wasnt upset when it went, other than there was a game inside that "couldnt be retrieved" by circuit city! anyways they are a good machine, very reliable in my opinion mine just got way too much use!
while i applaud the start into a new direction (on of responsibility) i still think that the ps3 should start out with more than 1 yrs warranty (on a claimed 10 yr machine, i think 2 yrs is minimum).
i fixed my YLOD and am super happy (and bitched the hell out of sony for dodging responsibility
Um…before you get all scathing and stuff, Sony's existing 1 year warranty meets and/or exceeds common practice in the industry (consumer electronics). Offering a manufacturer's warranty extension is a great option because although 3rd party companies exist to do this, I personally would trust a Sony technician over a 3rd party tech any day. Sony has a vested interest in getting it right, not just to make the warranty business work, but to protect new unit sales by ensuring good customer satisfaction.

we've had a similar scheme in Europe for sometime now. Saved me some money last year after I got YLOD two months after starting it.
I never got warranties other than for xbox 360, ps1 lasted my almost till ps2, ps2 almost lasted me till ps3 so on and so fourth.
2 360 and 3 power bricks already in less than three years , god u have to love M$
This is great though, I did get the 2-year already from futureshop on my 160 gb, but I find thi smore convientnent as you get a pre-paid shipping box too!!! Do they give you a second one after you get your console back??
thats a very good price! in fact i paid $127 for a 2 year warranty from circuit city where i bought my ps3. Thankfully it died 1 month before my warranty was up, and before they went belly up!
but Sony is offering a great price, i like that! now is that 2 year extension on top of the 1 year they sell it with? it must otherwise they wouldnt offer the 1 year since they come that way off the shelf, no questions asked!
yup thats 3 years of protection… a very good deal indeed.
The system is so reliable there's no need for this but it's nice to have if you are paranoid.
Paranoid sounds like an insult, but it's true. I stated earlier that ps3's are extremely reliable, but they are mass produced in china, and everything made in china is cheap.
They're also man made, and everything man made with moving parts dies over time, it's unavoidable. EVERY console I own thats out of warranty gets a monthly tear down and super cleaning to help the oldies live longer. These consoles of mine start from atari 2600 and go to ps2.
The only consoles to ever fail on me is 1 PS2 and 4 360's. Only console to ever fail on me and be completly inoperable was the 360.

I wish this had been available back when I got my PS3… I just got the YLOD yesterday and I'm not covered anymore.

same thing happened to me a few days ago :/
follow the gilksy guide on youtube if you try to fix it yourself
it worked for me
Ah the good old service plans…. where companies make TONS of money.
I ran some stats a while ago, found 10 pieces of electronics equipment with 10 service plans, added all those plans up, summed all the failure rates…. for 10 pieces of equipment, I had a 20% chance one would fail, and would have paid 2-3x the price of an average piece of equipment in just service plans.
The smart financial choice: buy no service plans like these, save your money, and 10 plans later you'll come out ahead if even 2 of those things break.
The only exception where service plans become a good idea is if something has moveable parts (like a controller). I returned 3 controllers to best buy under their service plan after they wore out. On that I actually came out ahead.
There's a big exception on that principle (which I do in general agree on). When you buy a $600 unit that turns out to be the jewel in the crown of the product range and has capabilities that all following models lack – full PS2 BC, more USB ports and a memory card reader. That's a product that I would like to have covered by a Sony warranty. In fact I'd even consider paying an annual fee to ensure continued operation of my 60GB BC systems.

Highlander, your jewel doesn't have the option for the service plan. We are talking extended warranties here. I know you are an advocate for a refurbishment option for your 60G, and I think that would be a great idea.
Keep in mind, you have labeled your machine the $600.00 crown jewel, but at the time you bought it, and had the extended warranty been available, you may not have got it because you did not know that they would take away BC or multiple USB ports.
Those are fair points. However we are where we are, and given the changes in the PS3 range, those 20GB and 60GB originals are clearly the 'special' ones. I'm aware that offering an extended warranty on an already out of warranty product is extremely unlikely. But I still think that a reconditioning/refurbishment service is a viable option for owners of these older systems.
Someone (it may have been you) pointed out that Sony already offers a $150 out of warranty repair service. That's true, and I could just plow on until time takes it's toll on my PS3s. However I'd like to be a bit more proactive than that. I understand that from a purely financial point of view it's probably a better idea to let time pass, but for me I want the peace of mind that comes from knowing that my system has been reconditioned by Sony.
I think this is great. Whenever I purchased a system I did it through BestBuy because of their warranty. Now that Sony is offering an extended 2 year warranty for $20 bucks less than they are, I don't need to make BestBuy my retailer of choice.
You never know, you may even be able to renew your extended warranty through Sony once the expiration date nears.
gees sony are really getting desperate!
first the HDD change, than this whats next?
soon ill be sending them my car for a routine oil change!
_________ how the heck are they desperate, I would rather buy the warranty directly from Sony than Bestbuy or Gamestop who 1 charge more than this and 2 have hidden agendas when u actually want to use the damn thing.
I think this is great, I got offered @ the sony Store when I picked up my launched console a 1 or 2 year warranty, never did it due to funds already forked over a crap load just to get the PS3 so I didn't have enough cash but my friend did it and said he was happy that he did.
how do they charge more?
i got 2 years extended warranty 4 games, 2 DS3 controllers and a BD remote when i bought my slim last year and it only cost me 600 bucks.
if i was to buy the same from a sony retailer the ps3 alone would of cost me 500 with none of the extras.
hell game gave me 2 years extended warranty for my original 60GB on launch for only 80 bucks.
point being you NEVER! buy something from the manufacturer because its always the most expensive there.
for example my USB stick just kicked the bucket so i bought a 64GB sandisk for 160 bucks.
if i were to buy it of the sandisk site it would of cost me over 400!
same with my computer, if i was to buy a dell, toshiba or whatever with the exact same specs as the one i built it would of cost me 1K extra at least!
My PS3 is two years old and my PSP is not much younger, plus it has had it's screen replaced once (by a non-Sony-guy).
Will I even be able to get this warranty?
