Activision Inks Decade-Long Publishing Deal With Bungie

Update: SCEA just sent over their statement concerning this news:

"The partnership between Bungie and Activision is a big win for gamers worldwide. Combining Bungie's creativity with the incredible power of the PlayStation 3 will add serious muscle to action gaming. We look forward to extending Bungie's 'next big action game universe' with PS3 users."

Original Story:

Bet you didn't see this one coming. …then again, maybe you've been expecting such an occurrence after Bungie split with Microsoft a few years back.

In one of the biggest news breaks of the year so far and as reported by CVG , Bungie and Activision have signed a 10-year deal to produce games for "multiple platforms and devices." They will deliver Bungie's "next big action IP" to the market some time soon; this deal gives Activision the exclusive worldwide rights to publish and distribute all of Bungie's creations over the next decade. The developer remains independent and will retain the rights to anything they design, and Activision says this new deal "significantly broadens its global reach." What if that analyst is correct in his prediction? What if Activision really does plan to shut down Infinity Ward and transfer the responsibility for Modern Warfare 3 to Bungie? After all, Bungie is really only known for Halo and although we're talking about two very different styles of FPS…it's still the same genre. But either way, this partnership should be quite fruitful in the future, and we'll all wait with bated breath to see what games come down the pike.  Should be fun.

And yes, it basically says Bungie stuff will finally be coming to the PlayStation platform. Activision doesn't really do exclusivity and there's that "multiple platforms and devices" statement. So, what say you?

Bungie's distinct advantage here is that they are independent working for Activision, IW was a wholly owned 'independent' developer. IW was never independent, they only had that illusion, Bungie is independent. Unless they've lost their minds, they'll stay that way, no matter who they sign a development deal with.

Since MS owns the Halo IP, we still won't see Halo on PS3 (not that I personally would want to). But, perhaps some other Bungie property will now make it's way to the Sony side of the force?

^Any company that can sell 10 million units of one game on one console is bound to make waves with their next announcement. There will be plenty of hype with the next game, and who knows if it will be deserved, but Bungie will definitely have the technical muscles to make the game good.

Highlander,
That's good to hear they're independent.

So that means boobie kotex "CAN'T" force them into doing a the same ole, same ole like…..

I think everyone is having the same complaints, this best not be another MW clone. because i wont buy it just for my sanity. unless all my friends do, but somehow, i think they wont. We like it less now.

The possibility of them making a FPS IP is high. Thats what they are good at. Antivision knows this and will probably push Bungie to make one ASAP. Its all about money and EmpireVision likes making it in bundles.

Ok, unexpected indeed.
Don't care much for either of these people's games though.
So, at least they ain't gonna develop xbot exclusive, that'll be the only good thing about this to me.

I have no interest in Halo, but I believe in what Bungie is capable of. Their next game will definitely be *good* in terms of technicals and gameplay, but whether or not it will appeal to the PS3 fanbase is something else.

Really? Meh…I mean it'll be good for PS3 owners who liked what Bungie has done so far and if they produce another IP good for them.

As for myself, I've never saw the appeal of the Halo series as a whole. The whole plot seems like a bad Sy-Fy movie of the week.

And I will be getting their first game, if it's interesting, used. I feel no need to give Kotic-vision any of my hard-earned money any time soon.

I'm glad microsofts big franchise is going multi plat on the grounds that I don't like Microsoft having single plat games, but I don't like Activision. I hope Bungie has nothing to do with Modern Warfare.

I'm pretty much 100% sure that Bungie will be making some kind of CoD game down the road if they're with Activision now but you know what would be REALLY cool; giving Bungie a struggling franchise that's in need of well-known developer. Spider-Man, anyone?

kraygen

Yikes, I really don't want to entrust spider-man to a fps assembly line company.

Not like they could do any worse than the last few developers.

Im willing to bet that part of the publishing deal would be to allow creative control over their IPs. So most likely, unless Bungie creates several teams and has projects going at the same time, that they will make a brand new franchise to call their own before they take on any licensed projects.

Just another victim. Independent or not, would you want to sign a ten year agreement with Activision. I submit that you would not.

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't want to sign that length of deal with any company. Companies change, I'd at least give it a trial run before signing any long term deal.

This couldnt be better timing for Activision themselved. Way to dig themselves out of a black hole.

Not to mention the partnership deal they struck is different from the the former IW/Activision one.

If youre at all interested in the business side of video gaming, this is as big as any game announcement. If you just wanna be a fanboy, then keep hating.

So if were not that interested in the business side of gaming when then champ?

what does not liking halo have to do with fanboyism? I had an original xbox with lots of games that I loved for it. Halo was the big original multiplayer shooter, but the SP was still your everyday normal fps.

Not fanboy, anti-fps.

But you don't know whether the fame is an fps. All you know is that a well known developer has signed on to make a game for the PS3. What's not to be excited about?

As for you, champ, how about not posting your anti bungie opinions multiple times in the same thread?

I really loved Halo. It is the game that really got me addicted to shooters. I don't know about you guys though. I'm voting with my wallet and acti isn't gettin another red cent outta me. Unless they start packaging in a gold piece.

I can't figure out why anyone would sign with anti-vision with all the lawsuits they been involved with the last few years.

But seriously now, Bungie had better hire extra lawyers just to go over the anti-vision contract with fine-tooth combs.

Otherwise they'll suddenly feel the texture of braided stretchy material squeezing their voice box's inward as kotex yanks harder on their own Bungie cords.

BTW, just my own gaming opinion(and preference) here, although I did like Halo 3, I hated the more cartoony H-1 & H-2.

This could be bad or this could be good, either way I don't have a good feeling on this.

We'll see what bungie has up their sleeves but to strike a deal with activision thats very suprising.

Do they think that Infinity Ward had anything other than enthusiastic hopes and dreams for the future when they signed up with Activision?

Some learn from the mistakes of others. Some are too dumb.
