When reading this, please remember that Sony's fiscal year does not coincide with the actual calendar year. It's easy to get confused.
Anyway, something big happened when Sony introduced the slimmer, more efficient, and above all else, cheaper , PlayStation 3 last fall. Sales quickly shot up and it certainly helped that one of the best games we've ever seen, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves , released at about the same time. And of course, if you wanted to play it, you needed a PS3. As we compare year-over-year fiscal financial results, we find that the new $299 price tag – and the addition of unbelievable exclusives – has really scored. Check out the sales graph over at PlayStation University ; it seems that worldwide sales of the system for 2009/2010 has already surpassed the total sales for the entire 2008/09 fiscal year. That means it only took six months to top the previous fiscal year's results, and we have yet to count the January 1 through June 30 period. This really shows just how popular the PS3 Slim has been in such a short span of time. Remember the big ol' 60GB fattie that cost $600…? Seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?
At this rate, it'll be interesting to see how much longer it'll be before the PS3 stands even with the Xbox 360. We've actually already asked that question and it seems our timing was just about right.
Were sounding a bit like fanboys here, I suggest we quiet down and stare at there silence of shame.

"When you can prove that 720p game play and 1080p cut scenes with loss-less audio are inferior to 576p game play and 576p compressed video with compressed audio, I'll give you a dollar. Until then, shut up."
Facts do not a fanboy make.
True but, it would only make them noisy and make up excuses not worthy hearing.
This was inevitable. Even after the premium launch price and the confusing marketing campaign the numbers are finally adding up. Imagine if backwards compatability and cross-chat were not factors. Among other things.
What really amazes me in all this is the seemingly absolute loyalty the xbox community has with the console. Its it me or is that RED RING hypnotizing these people. Red Ring. Rinse. Repeat.
i just read that the ps3 cell is now down to 40 nm. so this will help as it also has a 15% power reduction over the slim. so what is that like a 47% power reduction over the origanal ps3. where is the xbox? same sh!tty system.
all the reports of the system being hard to find make sense. if they got the chipset down in size for the slim but knew they had another downsizing for the chip right around the corner why not only put out what your selling.
soon they will have this smaller chip to put in there costing less making them more and not have old sysytems out there that arent makin sony the money.
@ thehighlander, how the hell does u're head not explode with all that info in there. I have learned alot of info from you 🙂
Sony will surpass in due time. I have seen lots on the shelves and some days stores have none but everytime I see 2 or 3 go out the stores here in Ontario Canada seem to stock up quick. Eventually I will buy another PS3 for my bedroom so me and the hubby aren't always fighting over it, he's been addicted to Dragon age recently where I've been playing the Sh!t out of Bioshock 2 in due time for another PS3 🙂
Happy to see Sony is moving up quickly but I always new they would I had so much faith in them I forked over the 600 for a launched 20gig :)people said I was crazy but I knew I wasn't .
i loved bioshock 2. well both of them but 2 was amazing. i loved what they did with it. bought the collectors edition.
I hear ya robochic
I paid $500 for my MGS4 edition and people said I was crazy, now those same people are asking me where they can get one, but now they're selling for over $700 new and nearly $400 used.
I got my from walmart which came with a $100 gift card, so really I only paid $400, that was nearly 2 years ago and I couldn't be happier still.
I wouldn't be surprised if Some of the info on this site is given by Highlander, that dude has so much stored inside his head. Its like i look at the article, gain some good info on whatever im interested in, then he comes into the comment section to drill more info in!

I'm still glad I bought my 60 gig when I did, it was the very last one available in my town, I got it for 500 euros, which would equal something like 650-700 dollars and it was worth every cent, it still is.
I had my good ol' phat Playstation 2(which never died on me) until I got my good ol' phat Playstation 3(which has never died on me either) and I hope I will have this until I get a good ol' phat Playstation 4(which will probably be death proof).
Yeah, I reckon in 2-3 years the gap will be closed, probably a straight 2 years. I think that will happen regardless of a price cut.
I will now start saving up money for a Playstation 4, so I can get one the day it arrives in stores here. With every new paycheck (yay I have a job now!), I'll put aside 20 bucks, ok, maybe 10 bucks.
I honestly don't care who win this "war", both in my opinion are great systems (I hate M$ though they are the devil) but as we always competition is healthy for us CUSTOMERS :), let them duke it out, I for one don't have any shares in neither so whatever ………….
The war is over, and we already have a winner – gamers. We won as soon as third party developers realized that the PS3 wasn't going away.
Amen to that Bro, Amen to that
@Highlander;
Excellent point and well done. 1,000 thumbs up for you.
all I can say it that I can't wait to get another ps3.
a phatty and a slim make a wonderful couple.
Glad to hear that.
My PS3 Phat gets traded in once Gamestop actually has the PS3 Slims in stock!!
But hey, the 360 makes an excellent DVD player.

Does your *phat* still work? Would you consider a private sale?
lol at the 360 comment – but I disagree. With it's horrid history of disc scratching, I wouldn't even recommend it for movie playback.
I think the only thing the 360 is good for is giving Sony a wakeup call and forcing them to keep pumping out new features. Kudos to Microsoft for helping to make the PS3 what it is today, an amazing all-in-one entertainment package.
Side note; Watched Avatar last night on bluray using my PS3…. WOW. Amazingly beautiful.
Maxpontiac,
I think you'd do much better checking out Highlanders offer than letting GS steal that 60 Gigger away from you for $200.
The 60Giggers are the Creme De La Creme of all the PS3 consoles, and are worth much more than that.
Hell, just before the slims came out, I paid $555(w/tax & 1 yr warranty included) for mine last year.
It's a marathon, not a sprint. Sony knew and planned it from the beginning.
Indeed. And if you remember back to the 360's launch, Sony managed to fake out MS and got them to blink first and launch early, way early. MS were originally going to launch about 6-9 months later. They rushed games and cut corners to get the 360 out first…
That said, the head start is the only reason the 360 is still in production (and not abandoned in four years like the Xbox).
@kraygen ya I paid a little over 650 or closer to 700 don't remember with taxes for mine, from the Sony Store.
I would never ever think of getting rid of my phat princess since it has the b/c chip in it I just wish it had wireless capability but thats the price you pay for the 2 model instead of the first, just didn't have the cash for the first but my 20 gig is going strong have a feeling I'll have that beast for long long time.
*High-Five* to Highlander, Biker, and Nynja.
I can't wait until PS3 surpasses the 360 numbers in total units sold and never looks back. Then we can all relax and just enjoy our console without comparison.
PSXE All-Stars
Great news for all us PS lovers. Sony does need to get some PS3s out there pronto.
